Objective To explore possible poisonous and harmful effect of excessive iodine intake on skeleton in male rats. Methods Male rat models receiving various amounts of excessive iodine were established for 3,6, 12 months, and quantitative bone histomorphometric parameters and bone mineral density (BMD) of femur and lumbar spine( L1-1 ) were measured by means of dual-energy X-ray absorptimetry in vitro, and rats receiving normal diet were considered as control group. Results There was no significant difference in bone mineral quantity and structural parameters after feeding excessive iodine for 3 months in comparison with control group. The BMD of L1-4 was significantly increased in all animal groups when various amounts of excessive iodide was taken for 6 months (all P

ve To study the mutagenecity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from decoration materials to experimental animals and human subjects so as to provide some technical basis for the management of safety and hygienic quality of indoor decoration materials. Methods The micronucleus test was carried out in mice exposed to the tested toxicants in an experimental cabinet, in which the tested VOCs were prepared at the various concentrations which were 5, 10, 20 and 40 times as high as the concentrations of VOCs in decorated rooms monitored on site respectively. The frequencies of micronucleus of peripheral blood lymphocytes were examined among waitress working in decorated indoor environment. Results The concentrations of formaldehyde, benzene, methylbenzene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate in decorated rooms were significantly higher than those in un-decorated rooms and the related national standards within half a year after decoration. The frequencies of micronucleus of mice exposed to tested VOCs with concentration being 40 times as high as those in decorated rooms were significantly higher than those of negative control group at the 15 th day after exposure. There were no significant differences in frequencies of mi-cronucleus in peripheral blood lymphocytes between waitress working in decorated rooms and un-decorated rooms. Conclusion VOCs emitted from decoration materials were uneasily diffused in air-conditioned airtight environment. The higher concentrations of VOCs simulated based on their levels in decorated rooms revealed mutagenecity to ex-perimental animals.

Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2005;9(32):230-231
BACKGROUND: It has been verified pharmacologically that honokiol (HL) and magnolol (ML) have distinct effects on central inhibition and muscle relaxation, and some reports prove that they can relieve morphine withdrawal symptoms in animals.OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of HL and ML on β-endorphin (β-EP) in relieving morphine withdrawal symptoms in rats.DESIGN: Randomized controlled study.SETTING: Pharmacological Department, the Medical School of Hubei national College.PARTICIPANTS: The experiment was conducted from 13 to 29 April,2003. Among 100 adult male SD rats, 30 rats as control group were randomly divided into three subgroups: saline group, HL group and ML group with 10 in each group. The other 70 rats as morphine-dependent group were divided into normal saline group, 5, 40 and 80 mg/kg HL and ML groups with 10 in each group.METHODS: 0.2 mL normal saline, 80 mg/kg HL and 80 mg/kg ML were injected intraperitoneally into rats in control group. The dose of morphine subcutaneously injected was increased in the rats in morphine-dependent group for 6 days to establish the model of acute morphine dependence and model of natural morphine withdrawal symptoms. The last injection was performed at 9:00 on the morning of day 6, and the intraperitoneal injection was performed at 10:30 on the same morning. 0.2 mL normal saline was injected into the rats of saline group. 5, 40 and 80 mg/kg HL and 5,40 and 80 mg/kg ML were given to rats in the other six groups, respectively. Starting from 11:00, half an hour later, all natural morphine withdrawal symptoms were observed in rats within an hour.compared among rats in the 7 morphine-dependent subgroups.control groups than in normal saline group (P < 0.01), and HL group had higher β-EP level than ML group (P < 0.05). β-EP level was obviously lower in morphine-dependent+saline groups than in control+saline groups (P < 0.01).β-EP level in morphine-dependent+5, 40 and 80 mg/kg HL groups and in morphine-dependent+5, 40 and 80 mg/kg ML groups was obviously higher Scores of natural morphine withdrawal symptoms in rats of morphine-dependent group: Scores of wetshakes, penile licking, escape attempts, and weight lost in HL and ML subgroups were obviously lower than those in saline group (P < 0.01).CONCLUSION: HL and ML can markedly restrain morphine withdrawal symptoms and this restraint is related to the increase of β-EP level in the brain. HL and ML have equal inhibitory effects on morphine-dependent rats, but HL is more effective than ML in normal rats.

Objective To investigate the feasibility of laparoscopically assisted anorectal pull-through in the repair of high imperforate anus. Methods Four infants (3 boys and 1 girl, age range, 1 d~90 d) with high imperforate anus entered this study. During operations, the rectum was exposed via laparoscope down to the rectourethral fistula, which was ligated and dissected out laparoscopically; and then, by way of a passage through the center of pelvic floor musculature, the rectum was exteriorized to the perineum to perform anorectal anastomosis. Results Laparoscopically assisted anorectal pull-through was successfully performed in all the 4 cases as a primary procedure. The mean duration of the laparoscopy was 71 8 min (range, 45 min~90 min) and the mean blood loss 8 3 ml (range, 5 ml~20 ml), no blood transfusion required and no intraoperative complications occurred. All patients recovered uneventfully. In 3~12 months of follow-up, 1 patient was found anal stenosis at 1 month after the operation and was cured with secondary anorectoplasty. No postoperative complications were seen in the other 3 cases. By now, all the 4 patients have normal fecal continence. Conclusions Laparoscopically assisted anorectal pull-through is an effective technique in the repair of high imperforate anus. Experience has shown that this approach offers minimally invasive wounds, excellent visualization of the rectal fistula and accurate identification of the center of pelvic floor musculature.

Chinese Journal of Interventional Cardiology 1996;0(01):-
Objective To investigate the level of coronary endothelial injury and dysfunction, the jeopardy score of coronary artery lesion by angiography, and their correlations in patients with stable angina (SA) or unstable angina (UA). Methods The 20 patients with UA, 17 patients with SA and 18 patients excluding coronary heart disease (control) were studied. Blood samples were collected during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). To investigate the coronary endothelial injury and dysfunction, we measured the concentrations of nitric oxide (NO)? endothelin (ET) and the number of circulating endothelial cells (CEC) in coronary sinus blood. The jeopardy score for coronary artery lesion was evaluated according to the method by Califf. Results In angina patients, especially in UA patients, NO concentration in coronary sinus blood was lower, while ET concentration and CEC number were markedly higher than those in control group. The jeopardy scores showed no difference between UA and SA. The coronary endothelial injury and dysfunction showed a positive correlation with jeopardy scores. Conclusion The coronary endothelial injury and dysfunction is not only the initiation factor, but may play a key role in the progression of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Coronary angiography combined with detection of coronary endothelial injury and dysfunction may better describe the lesion of coronary artery, and evaluate the prognosis of patients with coronary heart disease.
