Academic Journal of Second Military Medical University 2010;30(9):1039-1042
Objective: To observe the gingival color of healthy Han nationality in Shanghai, so as to discuss the gingival color distribution and its influencing factors. Methods: The Chroma Meter CR-321 was used to obtain the CIE-1976-L* a* b* value in predefined testing spots of gingiva in healthy Han nationality in Shanghai. The gingival color distribution and the influences of age, sex on the gingival color were summarized. Results: We found that the L* values of attached gingiva of the median line(P=0.0061), free gingiva of central incisor(P = 0.0324), attached gingiva in the root of central incisor (P=0.029 7), and distal incisor attached gingiva (P=0.0324) in the female were significantly higher than those in the male; the a* b* values in attached gingiva of median line (P = 0.0083, P = 0.0020) were significantly higher than those in male; and the other a*, b* values were similar between the males and females. The color difference ΔE between free gingiva and attached gingiva was > 2 (P<0.01). ΔL*2 had the greatest influence on ΔE, with the standardized regression coefficient being b' = 0.88216, followed by Δa*2 and Δb*2 in order, with b' being 0.23097 and 0.06632, respectively. L*, a*, and b* values had no obvious relation to age. Conclusion: It is indicated that sex and age have little influence on the color of gingiva in Han nationality in Shanghai. Obvious color difference exists between the free gingiva and the attatched gingiva.

The effective quality control in clinical practices is an effective guarantee for the authenticity and scientificity of the findings. The post-marketing reevaluation for traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) focuses on the efficacy, adverse reaction, combined medication and effective dose of drugs in the market by expanded clinical trials, and requires a larger sample size and a wider range of patients. Therefore, this increases the difficulty of quality control in clinical practices. With the experience in quality control in clinical practices for the post-marketing reevaluation for Kangbingdu oral for cold, researchers in this study reviewed the study purpose, project, scheme design and clinical practice process from an overall point of view, analyzed the study characteristics of the post-marketing reevaluation for TCMs and the quality control risks, designed the quality control contents with quality impacting factors, defined key review contents and summarized the precautions in clinical practices, with the aim to improve the efficiency of quality control of clinical practices. This study can provide reference to clinical units and quality control-related personnel in the post-marketing reevaluation for TCMs.

BACKGROUND:Separating umbilical cord blood stem cells using tubes has low efficiency, and microbial contamination easily occurs during this process, therefore, safety cannot be ensured in clinical application.lt is urgent to find a method for separating umbilical cord blood stem cells to treat femoral head necrosis.OBJECTIVE:To establish a high efficient, safe, and clinically valuable method to separate umbilical cord blood stem cells.DESIGN,TIME AND SETTING:A self-control experiment was performed at the First Department of Surgery,Zhengzhou Second People's Hospital,Institute of Blood Constituent Application,Henan Red Cross Blood Centre between February 2006 and August 2007.PARTICIPANTS:Eight male patients with femoral head necrosis, averaging 40.6 years of age, were included in this study.Of these patients,4 had the history of hormone application. An average of 90 mL umbilical cord blood was harvested from each healthy normal full term neonate from Maternal and Children Health Care Hospital of Zhengzhou City. The quadruple bags used for separating umbilical cord blood stem cells consisted of 1 main bag,1 empty bag,and 2 physiological saline bags, provided by Shandong Weigao Holding,China.METHODS:Within 6 hours after collection, umbilical cord blood was centrifuged in the empty bag of quadruple bag, which was connected with an aseptic filling machine. After centrifugation, partial blood plasma was discarded, and the remaining erythrocytes were thoroughly mixed by adding hetastarch.Five minutes later, the mixture was diluted with physical saline at 1:1.Umbilical cord blood was slowly added into the main bag (at 1:1),in which, human lymphocyte separating medium was pre-added.After cantrifugation, the upper layer of solution,i.e.,monocyte-rich solution, was transferred into another empty bag.Within 24hours of preservation, after suspension with umbilical blood plasma, umbilical cord monocytes were transfused into patients with femoral head necrosis via superficial vein on the hand back,monocytes≥1×108/portion,2 portions once. There were three treatment courses, each involving three transfusion sessions, one session every 4 days, and a 2-3-month interval between two treatment courses.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Cell recovery rate and cell viability of umbilical cord blood monocytes and improvements in clinical symptoms.RESULTS:The separation of quadruple bags could obtain umbilical cord blood monocytes with high recovery rate.Furthermore, microbial contamination hardly occurred in the process of separation.Hip joint pain relieved or disappeared to different extents in all 8 patients, with an effective rate of 100%.Abduction and internal rotation of hip joint, ambulation distance, and gait were markedly improved. At 6 months after cell transplantation,5 patients presented with changed bone density in femoral head necrosis regions,2 showed normal femoral head morphology, and the remaining 1 exhibited no obvious changes.Joint effusion was reduced or disappeared in 12 hips.Magnetic resonance images showed that femoral head morphology had been improved in various degrees in 9 hips, but no changes in 3 hips.No complications, fever,or allergies occurred during and after cell transplantation.CONCLUSION:The method of separating stem cells from umbilical cord blood in junction with aseptic interface technology is highly effective, safe, and clinically valuable.Multiple intravenous transfusions of umbilical cord blood stem cells provide a novel approach for systemic treatment of femoral head necrosis.

OBJECTIVETo study the effect of exogenous Ca2+ on photosynthetic parameters of Pinellia ternate and accumulations of active components under high temperature stress.
METHODThe pigment contents of P. ternata leaves, photosynthesis parameters and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of P. ternata leaves, the contents of guanosine, adenosine and polysaccharide in P. ternata tubers were measured based on different concentrations of exogenous Ca2+ in heat stress when the plant height of P. ternata was around 10 cm.
RESULTThe contents of total chlorophyll and ratio of chlorophyll a/b were relatively higher by spaying Ca2+. Compared with the control, spaying 6 mmol x L(-1) Ca2+ significantly enhanced the net photosynthetic rate (Pn), transpiration (Tr) and stomatal limitation (L8), but reduced intercellular CO2 concentration (C) in P. ternata leaves. With the increase of Ca2+ concentration, maximal PS II efficiency (Fv/Fm), actual photosynthetic efficiency (Yield) and photochemical quenching coefficient (qP) initially increased and then decreased, however, minimal fluorescence (Fo) and non-photochemical quenching coefficient (NPQ) went down first and then went up. The contents of guanosine and polysaccharide and dry weight of P. ternata tubers showed a tendency of increase after decrease, and the content of adenosine increased with the increase of Ca2+ concentration. The content of guanosine and polysaccharide in P. ternata tubers and its dry weight reached maximum when spaying 6 mmol x L(-1) Ca2+.
CONCLUSIONWith the treatment of calcium ion, the inhibition of photosynthesis and the damage of PS II system were relieved in heat stress, which increased the production of P. ternata tubers.
