1.A study of media image of traditional Chinese medicine on New York Times
International Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine 2016;38(7):577-581
Objective To summarize the media image of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) by analyzing the TCM-related reports onNew York Times. Methods A total of 113 pieces of TCM-related reports onNew York Times during the 1980-2015 period collected and analyzed from the aspects of the amount, genres, coverage resources, reporting attitudes and main issues under the framework of content analysis.Results①The amount of TCM-related reports has been on the rise since 1980s. There was a wide variety in the genres of the reports and the American local resources account for a large proportion.②The reporting attitude in general tended to be relatively positive, though a major difference can be found in the attitude toward acupuncture and herbs.③ Eleven main issues can be categorized in the reports. Conclusion Changes could be seen in the TCM-related reports over time. Despite the fact that the media image of TCM tends to be relatively positive, the negative attitude toward herbs may hamper their development in the US. External communication of TCM is to be strengthened so as to promote the media image of TCM.
2.Discussion on English translation of traditional Chinese medicine with the intercultural communication perspective
International Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine 2015;(5):385-389
Analysis of differences between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) philosophy with malnstream western medicine was done with reference to intercultural communication theory. It was found that the differences are malnly manifested through holism philosophy of TCM and dualism of Western medicine, intuition thinking mode of TCM and mechanical thinking mode of western medicine, and ideographic Chinese language and objective description of the Western medicine. The translation principle was also discussed with the perspective of intercultural communication. It is of great significance to respect the recipient’s privilege, to create intimate text, and to understand the bilingual differences if TCM translation is to be promoted.
3.The effects of hyperbaric oxygenation therapy on serum cytokines and depression in post-stroke depression
Chinese Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 2009;31(10):667-670
Objective To investigate the effects of hyperbaric oxygenation(HBO)therapy on serum cytokines and depression in post-stroke depression(PSD)and to study it's clinical implications. Methods Sixty patients with PSD were divided into two groups.Patients in routine treatment group(RT group)were treated with routine clinical treatment, whereas those in HBO group were treated with HBO therapy in addition to routine clinical treatment. The serum cytokines of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)and interleukin-1β(IL-1β)were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)before and after 30 days of treatment. All the patients were evaluated with Hamilton depression scale(HAMD),Chinese stroke scale(CSS)and Barthel index(BI).The evaluations were carried out at the 0 and 30 d.Results Before treatment, the concentrations of TNF-α and IL-1β in patients with PSD were significantly higher than those in patients with cerebral infarction without depression(P<0.01),and the serum levels of TNF-α and IL-1β in those with serious depression were higher than those with moderate and mild depression(P<0.01),and that in moderate depression patients were higher than that in mild depression patients{P<0.01).At the 30th d post-treatment,those parameters all decreased significantly in RT group and HBO group(P<0.01,P<0.05).Moreover,those parameters were lower in HBO group than those in RT group(P<0.01),and HAMD,CSS and BI scores in HBO group were significantly better than that in RT group(P<0.05,P<0.01).Conclusions Serum cytokines levels increased significantly in patients with PSD and were associated with the severity of depression.Serum cytokines might played an important role in pathogenesis of PSD.HBO therapy could help decrease the levels of TNF-α and IL-1β.HBO might exert therapeutic effect by reducing secondary the inflammatory injury in acute cerebral infarction.
4.Change of T lymphocyte subsets and their different apoptosis in acute pancreatitis
Chinese Journal of Hepatobiliary Surgery 2008;14(8):569-571
Objective To investigate the dynamic change and different apoptosis of T lymphocyte subsets in patients with acute pancreatitis. Methods Forty-four patients with MAP and 32 with SAP were enrolled in this study.Blood samples were collected on the lst,3rd and 7th d after onset.T lymphocyte subsets and their apoptotic rate were determined by flow cytometry. Results Compared with the control group and MAP group,CD4+ T lymphocytes and the ratio of CD4+/CD8+remarkably decreased while the apoptotic rate of CD4+ T cells significantly increased in patients with SAP.However, there was no marked difference in apoptotic rate of CD8+ T cells among different groups. Conclusion The different apoptosis of T lymphocyte subsets in AP,especially in SAP,results in severe and sustained cellular immune suppression.
5.Clinical observation on heavy silicone oil in the treatment of complicated retinal detachment
Chinese Journal of Postgraduates of Medicine 2010;33(24):20-22
Objective To observe the therapeutic effect and safety of heavy silicone oil used as internal tamponade to treat complicated retinal detachment. Methods Retrospective 15 patients ( 15 eyes)with complicated retinal detachment, whose retinal detachment arising from inferior retinal tears. Heavy silicone oil was applied to patients during vitrectomy. Results The mean follow-up was (4.20 ± 1.62)months. Retinal reattachment and holes were closed in 15 cases. Conclusions The study shows that heavy silicone oil tamponade is effective to treat complicated retinal detachment and relatively few complications. However, its emulsification period is relatively short, which may constrain its application to a certain extent.
8.Progress of the Recovery Mechanism of Brain Injury Associated with the Gene Polymorphism of Apolipoproteins E
Journal of Forensic Medicine 2014;(6):466-469
Brain injury is a kind of wound by violence on head, which is a mechanical distortion of skull, meninx, cerebral vascular and brain tissue due to outside force acting on head. Apolipoproteins E (ApoE ) is a major kind of apolipoprotein s, participating in the metabolismof lipid and regulating bal-ance of cholesterol. Some recent investigations showthat gene polymorphismof ApoE is associated with various kinds of diseases. Also its immunoreactivity is changed regularly with brain injury. In addition, ApoE has remarkable effect in neurological normal growth and reparative process after brain injury. This article reviews the biological characteristics and mechanismof ApoE in the repair of brain injury and application prospect in forensic medicine, which may be able to provide newideas for estimation of the brain injury time and related experimental research.
10.Establishment of a guinea pig model of dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton verrucosum
Chinese Journal of Dermatology 2012;45(8):582-583
Objective To establish a guinea pig model of dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton verrucosum. Methods Thirty-two guinea pigs were randomly and equally divided into four groups to remain untreated (group 1 ),receive depilation and skin abrasion in the back (group 2 and 4),or only depilation (group 3).The back was smeared with a suspension (100 μl) of Trichophyton verrucosum in group 1,2 and 3,and with that of Trichophyton mentagrophytes in group 4.Direct microscopy, fungal culture and histopathology were performed to validate the infection of guinea pigs by Trichophyton. Results Direct microscopy was persistently negative in group 1,turned to be positive from the 7th to 9th day in group 2,3,and 4.Colonies began to appear 7 days after the inoculation of scrapings onto Sabouraud's dextrose agar (SDA) in group 2 and 3,and were observed at all the inoculated sites 2 weeks after the inoculation, with a morphological similarity to Trichophyton verrucosum before inoculation into guinea pigs.Hematoxylin and eosin staining revealed strongly refractive hyphae and spores in stratum corneum epidermidis and infundibular regions of some hair follicles in group 2 and 3.Conclusion A guinea pig model of dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton verrucosum is successfully constructed.
