Objective:To investigate the antioxidant activity of Maca polysaccharides in vitro. Methods:A chemical reaction system was established to explore the scavenging activity of Maca polysaccharides within the concentration range of 0.18-5.00 mg ·ml-1on hydroxyl radicals (·OH),superoxide anion free radicals (O2-·) and DPPH·,and then the total antioxidant capacity was calculated. The protective effects of Maca polysaccharides on H2O2-induced damage in SH-SY5Y cells were determined. SH-SY5Y cells were divided into the control group,H2O2model group and Maca polysaccharide groups(25,50,100 μg·ml-1). In the Maca polysaccharide groups,SH-SY5Y cells were pre-protected by Maca polysaccharides for 24 h, and then incubated in the presence of 300 μmol·L-1H2O2for 6 h. The detection index was SH-SY5Y cell viability detected by MTT assay. Results:Maca polysaccharide within the concentration range of 0.18-5.0 mg·ml-1all exhibited strong scavenging activity on·OH,O2-· and DPPH·in a dose-dependent manner. When the concentration of Maca polysaccharides reached 2.5 mg·ml-1,the scavenging rate was 60.36% for DPPH·,34.66% for O2-·and 36.01% for·OH,the total antioxidant activity was equivalent to 0.179 μmol FeSO4. Maca polysaccharides at the concentration of 25, 50 and 100 μg·ml-1all showed significant protective effects on H2O2-induced injury in SH-SY5Y cells, and the cell survival rate was 61.71 ± 2.45%,61.73 ± 4.51% and 60.98 ± 3.12%, respectively, which were all significantly higher than those in the model group (P < 0.05). Conclusion:Maca polysaccharides has good antioxidant activity, which is worthy of further research and development as a natural antioxidant.

OBJECTIVE:
To detect pathological variant in two patients with Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) from a consanguineous family and to explore its genotype-phenotype correlation.
METHODS:
Clinical data was collected for this pedigree. Genomic DNA was prepared from probands' peripheral leukocytes and their relatives' fingernail. Whole exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing were carried out to detect potential variant of the LYST gene.
RESULTS:
The proband presented with partial oculocutaneous albinism, immunodeficiency and acidophilic inclusion body in bone marrow and blood smears. A novel homozygous nonsense variant c.8782C>T (p.Gln2928*) was identified in exon 34 of the LYST gene in the sib pair. The same variant was found to be in heterozygous status in 6 unaffected individuals from the pedigree.
CONCLUSION
Above result enriched the mutational spectrum of CHS and provided a basis for genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis for this pedigree.

Chinese Journal of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2006;41(8):579-582
OBJECTIVETo investigate the efficacy and the surgical techniques of transnasal endoscopic procedure for juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA).
METHODSTwenty-one nasopharyngeal angiofibroma patients were treated using transnasal endoscopic approach. They were divided into group A (without intracranial extension) and group B (minimal intracranial extension) according to the staging of Sessions. The patients were treated mostly with endoscopic surgery. In two midfacial operations cases, endoscopy was also used. The staging, average blood loss during surgery, tumor residual, and (or) recurrent tumor were evaluated.
RESULTSGroup A (19 cases) had an average blood loss of 1000 ml. Nineteen patients had no residual or recurrent tumor over a follow-up of 8-24 months. Group B (2 cases) had an average blood loss of 1500 ml. One of the patients had minimal residual tumor around the cavernous sinus, but showed no progression over a follow-up of 2 years. Another patient had no residual or recurrent tumor over a follow-up of 8 months.
CONCLUSIONSThe data suggests that transnasal endoscopic surgical techniques can be used to treat JNA which either limited to nasal and nasopharyngeal cavities or and the tumor with sphenoid and ethmoid invasions and even minimal intracranial extension.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the biomechanical stability of the acetabular fracture with three different internal fixation methods.
METHODSSixteen both-column acetabular fracture models were randomly divided into three groups:The specimens of 16 hip joints were randomly divided into 4 groups. Among them, 1 group of complete acetabulum were used as normal control group, and the other 3 groups simulated two column fracture models and were fixed in the following methods, respectively: anterior wall with screw and posterior with plate(SP), anterior wall with plate and posterior wall with screw(PS) and both wall with plate (PP). The degree of fracture displacement and the contact characteristics of the acetabulum were recorded by continuous vertical loading.
RESULTSThe mean longitudinal displacement under the load 800 N of SP, PS and PP three groups were (1.92±0.81), (2.09±1.13) and (3.44±0.75) mm, there was significant difference between SP and PP group (0.033). And the mean horizontal displacement of SP, PS and PP three groups were(0.63±0.33), (0.77±0.45) and (1.44±0.56) mm, there was significant difference between SP and PP group(0.047).Compared with normal control group in the acetabular area under the loading 800 N, the contact area of SP, PS and PP groups were increased by 6%, 9% and 27%, there was significant difference between PP and normal control group (0.027). Meanwhile, the mean stress of SP, PS and PP groups were increased by 4%, 29% and 39%, there was significant difference between PP and intact acetabulum group (0.003).
CONCLUSIONSAnterior column screw combined with posterior column plate has better biomechanical stability and contact characteristics than other two methods.
