To investigate the protective effect of L-carnitine on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in rat heart, all harvested isolated hearts were perfused on Langendorff apparatus with oxygenized K-H solution for 20 min. The hearts were then exposed to ischemia for 30 min. Following the ischemia the hearts were re-perfused with K-H solution for 120 min to serve as the control group A. Either 5 or 10 mmol/L of L-carnitine was added into the K-H solution for 20 min at the beginning of reperfusion to generate group B and group C, respectively. The derivatives of the intraventricular pressure curve (DP/DT), left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP), and coronary flux were monitored during the entire experiment. The levels of ATP, hepatin, malondialdehyde (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in tissue, and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine phosphate kinase (CPK), malondialdehyde (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) concentration in the coronary efflux were all measured. Compared with the control group, the treatment with L-carnitine resulted in better results, i. e., higher DP/DTmax and LVDP. At the same time, ventricular fibrillation was reduced, and the levels of ATP, hepatin and SOD were all elevated. However, the concentrations of MDA, CPK and LDH were all reduced. In conclusion, L-carnitine has a protective effect on ischemia-reperfusion injury, which is partly due to its prevention of energy loss and its antioxidant activity.

Purpose To investigate the clinicopathologic features of calcifying aponeurotic fibroma (CAF). Methods The clinical and pathologic profiles of 6 cases of CAF were retrospectively analyzed. Results CAF appeared a firm, painless and slowly growing mass with a predilection for the distal portions of the extremities in young children and adolescents. Microscopically, the tumor consis-ted mainly of benign appearing spindle cells, chondroid cells and calcific debris. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for vimentin, HHF-35, S-100, Calponin and CD68. Conclusion CAF is a rare, locally aggressive fibroblastic lesion. It can make an accurate diagnosis by integrating the clinical location with histopathological features. Repeated minor trauma to the extremities and some embryologic cell nests maybe its pathogenesis.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Dazhui" (GV 14) on Wnt-β-catenin signal pathway in annulus fibrosus cells in intervertebral disc in rats with cervical spondylosis.
METHODSForty SD rats were randomized into a control group, a model group, an EA group and a medication group, 10 rats in each one. Rats in the control group were treated with sham operation, only incision on local skin; rats in the remaining groups were made into cervical spondylosis models. After model establishment, rats in the control group and model group received fixed treatment under identical condition; rats in the EA group were treated with EA at "Dazhui" (GV 14), 30 min per treatment; rats in the medication group were treated with intragastric administration of meloxicam tablets. Treatments were both given once a day, and 14 days were taken as one session; there was an interval of 2 days between two sessions, and totally two sessions were given. After the treatments, immunohistochemistry was applied to measure the expression of Wnt, glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) and Axin in annulus fibrosus cells; western blot was used to test the expression of P-β-catenin.
RESULTSIn the control group, there were more positive cells of Wnt, GSK-3β and Axin, which were intensively distributed, deeply colored, and strongly positive; In the model group, there were less positive cells of Wnt, GSK-3β and Axin, which were sparsely distributed and weakly positive. The expression of Wnt, GSK-3β, Axin and P-β-catenin in the model group was less than that in the control group (all P < 0.05); expression of Wnt, GSK-3β, Axin and P-β-catenin in the EA group and medication group was higher than that in the model group (all P < 0.05); expression of Wnt, GSK-3β, Axin and P-β-catenin was not significantly different between EA group and medication group (all P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONEA could delay the degeneration of intervertebral disc, which may be related to EA inhibiting signal pathway of Wnt-β-catenin.
