2.THE RESPONSES OF VISUAL FUNCTION TO LUTEIN SUPPLEMENTS IN PEOPLE WITH LONG-TERM DISPLAY LIGHT EXPOSURE
Acta Nutrimenta Sinica 2004;0(05):-
Objective To examine the effect of lutein supplementation on visual function in people with long-term display light exposure. Method Thirty-seven persons (age 22-30) with long-term display light exposure were divided into low-dose group, high-dose group, and placebo group involving supplementation with 6 mg lutein/d, 12 mg lutein/d, and placebo for 12 w. The levels of serum lutein and visual function indices such as break-up time (BUT), critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF), visuognosis persistence, and reaction time were measured at week 0 and 12. Results After lutein supplementation serum concentrations of high-dose group and low-dose group increased from (0.328?0.120) ?mol/L to (0.733?0.354) ?mol/L, and from (0.356?0.117) ?mol/L to (0.607?0.176) ?mol/L respectively. There was significant increase of break up time in left eyes of high-dose group. Visuognosis persistence was significantly improved, and significant decrease of simple reaction time was observed in high-dose group. No statistical change was observed in critical flicker fusion frequency, discriminative reaction time and choice reaction time during the study. Conclusion Visual function indices such as break-up time, visuognosis persistence and simple reaction time in people with long-term display light exposure who received lutein supplements were significantly improved.

Journal of Clinical Neurology 1988;0(02):-
Objective To study the effect of rehabilitation in stroke patients with dysphagia. Methods 31 cases with dysphagia were randomly divided into rehabilitation group (17 cases) and control group (14 cases). Two groups were given same basic therapy on the whole, while the early rehabilitation was performed on the patients in rehabilitation group three times a day for 3 weeks. We compared assessment score of dysphagia by VFSS (videofluoroscopic swallowing study), and observed serum potassium, sodium, albumin levels and the incidence of inhalation-pneumonia in two groups before and after treatment. Results VFSS score (7.2?2.1) of rehabilitation group was markedly higher than before treatment (4.0?1.9) and control group (4.7?2.1)(all P0.05).Conclusions Rehabilitation has a remarkable effect on stroke patients with dysphagia.

Objective To determine the expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor(VEGF) and Matrix Metalloproteinases-9(MMP-9) in non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) specimens and try to find out the possible roles of VEGF and MMP-9 in the invasion and metastasis of NSCLC.Methods Immunohistochemical SABC method was used to detect the expression of VEGF and MMP-9 in 23 non-cancerous pulmonary diseases tissues,30 normal lung tissues near the NSCLC and 111 NSCLC tissues. Results The expression levels of VEGF and MMP-9 in the NSCLC tissues were significantly higher than those of the control groups(P

Purpose:To analyze retrospectively the clinical manifestation, treatment and prognosis. Methods:From 1978 to 1996,16 patients with olfactory neuroblastoma were treated.4 cases were stage A,6 cases were stage B and 6 cases were stage C. Six patients were treated with radiotherapy alone or combined with chemotherapy, 9, with surgery and postoperative radiotherapy and 1,with operative alone. The radiation dosage ranged from 40~70Gy with 2 Gy per day. Results:The 1 , 3 and 5 year survival rates were 75%, 75% and 69%.Conclusions:Olfactory neuroblastoma is sensitivity for radiotherapy, for the patients with stage A, radiotherapy alone is effective for stage B and C olfactory neuroblastoma , combined modality of surgery and postoperative radiotherapy should be the treatment of choice.

Objective To develop a rapid expansion assay and determine the predominant epitope for HBV-specific CD8 T cells from peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMC) of patients with acute hepatitis B(AHB).Methods PBMC were isolated from a patient with HLA-A2 positive AHB,and the frequency of HBV-specific CD8 T-cells was determined using 3 kinds of HLA-A2 antigenic peptide florescence-labeled pentamer agents,i.e.S183-191 and S335-343 derived from HLA-A2 restricted HBsAg epitope, and C18-27 derived from HBcAg epitope.Cytokines and corresponding epitopic peptides were used for induction of positive CD8 T-cell expansion and enrichment in PBMC for 1-2 weeks.T epitope-specific CD8 T-cells were quantified and sorted by flow cytometry. Results After cultivation with antigenic peptide stimulation and proper cultural condition, the frequency increased significantly in the pentamer positive HBV-specific CD8 T cells in total CD8 T cells. The peak value was observed in 2-week cultivation. At the time the HBV-specific CD8 T cell frequencies increased from 0.21% to 15.17% for S183-191,and from 0.44% to 1.79% for S335-343,representing 73.8-folds and 3.1-folds increase for each epitope respectively. However, the frequency of C18-27-specific CD8 T-cells was negative and without obvious proliferation after stimulation. Conclusions Under stimulation of HBV epitopic peptide in proper culture condition, the specific CD8 T lymphocytes may be induced and expanded in quantity via sort-term conditioned culture.CD8 T cells specific for S183-191 may play an important role in the control of acute HBV infection.

Objective To explore the methylation status of hMLH1 and hMSH2 promoter region in the epithelial ovarian cancer and its role in oncogenesis. Methods Methylation status of hMLH1 and hMSH2 promoter region was assayed in 20 normal ovarian tissues,25 benign epithelial tumor,56 malignant epithelial tumor and cell lines SKOV3,3AO by methylation-specific PCR (MSP).SKOV3 and 3AO were analyzed before and after 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine (5-Aza-CdR) treatment. In addition,an alterations of mRNA expression of hMLH1 and hMSH2 was observed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PT-PCR).Results No methylation of hMLH1 and hMSH2 promoter was found in normal ovarian tissues. CPG islands methylation of hMLH1 and hMSH2 was observed in 4% (1/25),8% (2/25) respectively in benign epithelial tumor,30.4% (17/56),51.8% (29/56) respectively in malignant epithelial tumor. Methylation status in promoter showed obvious correlation with pathological grade and lymph node metastasis (P

Objective To explore the factors relating to serum lutein level in elderly patients with early age-related macular degeneration (AMD).Methods 102 early AMD patients diagnosed by international diagnostic criteria were selected. The level of serum lutein was measured by HPLC,and dietary intake was estimated by food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ).The factors relating to serum lutein level were analyzed by Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis models. Results Serum lutein level was higher in female AMD patients than in male AMD patients [(0.33±0.31) μmol/L vs.(0.21 ±0.19) μmol/L,t=2.21,P<0.05].Serum lutein level was positively correlated with dietary lutein (r=0.49,P< 0.001),but not correlated with age,BMI,and other nutrient intake after adjustment for caloric intake.Dietary lutein was mainly from corn, spinach, leeks, eggs, chrysanthemum, pumpkin, broccoli, lettuce, asparagus and peas.Intakes of spinach, pumpkin, asparagus were significantly associated with serum lutein level. Conclusions Elderly patients with AMD should increase the intakes of lutein-rich vegetables to increase the serum lutein level.
