The body mass index (BMI)is one of the important indexes to evaluate the nutrition / health status.BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in per square meter (unit of kg/m2).BMI is changing with age. However, there are no BMI guidelines for the elderly. It is really necessary to set up a proper BMI range for the elderly. This research analyzed the relationship of BMI with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality and body composition change in the elderly. The result showed that an appropriate higher BMI could help to decrease the all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in the elderly and could also increase bone density and lean body mass, which could prevent the geriatric fracture and sarcopenia.Furthermore,underweight-related mortality was much higher than overweight-related mortality.

OBJECTIVETo study the mechanism of learning and memory dysfuction in the transgenic mouse expressing human tau 40 isoform with P301L mutation (F10).
METHODSThe human tau protein expression and phosphor-tau protein levels were detected with Western blot method. The neurofibrillary tangles were observed with Bielshowsky silver stain. The behavior changes of learning and memory were observed by open field test and passive avoidance test. Acetyleholine level, activities of acetycholinesterase and choline acetyltransferase of whole brain was detected by colorimetry method. The nitric oxide level of whole brain was detected by nitrate enzyme reduction method.
RESULTSExogenous human tau gene was expressed and an elevation of phosphor-tau protein level in 7 and 3-month transgenic mice's hippocampus andcerebrocortex was observed. The neurofibrillary tangles were observed in cerebrocortex of 7-month transgenic mice; the 7-month transgenic mice also presented an evident reduction of learning and memory ability and nitric oxide level of the whole brain, but not changes in acetylcholine level, acetycholinesterase activity, choline acetyltransferase activity and expression in whole brain.
CONCLUSIONTau transgenic mice (F10) can still inherit their parents' biologiccal characters, and develop learning and memory dysfunction awnodh san obvious decrease in nitric oxide level of whole brain in the 7-month old mice, suggesting a decrease of nitric oxide level of whole brain would be involved in the mechanism of learning and memory dysfunction in these transgenic mice.

Objective To study the pattern of lymphatic metastasis in patients with thoracic esopha-geal carcinoma, and to determine the indication and the target volume for post-operative radiotherapy. Meth-ods 229 patients with thoracic esophageal carcinoma who had undergone radical esophagectomy and two-field lymph node dissection were included in this study. The pattern and ratio of lymph node metastasis were analyzed. The effect of the tumor length and pathology stage on lymph node metastasis was studied. Then the indication and target of post-operative radiotherapy for the thoracic esophageal carcinoma was determined. Results Regional lymph node metastasis was found in 57.1% patients with upper thoracic esophageal car-cinoma. For the middle thoracic esophageal carcinoma, the ratio of regional metastasis, skip, upward, down-ward and two-way spread were 39.0%, 19.5% ,5.2% ,28.6% and 7.8% ,respectively. For lower thoracic esophageal carcinoma, downward spread was found in 77.2% patients. For upper thoracie esophageal carci-noma,the proportions of patients with lymph node metastasis were 19.0% ,6.7% ,9.8% and 14.3% in the superior mediastinum, middle mediastinum, inferior mediastinum and abdominal cavity ( x2 = 2.75, P = 0.433). The corresponding figures were 26.1% ,7.4% ,11.8% and 11.9% (x2 = 17.98,P =0.000) for middle thoracic esophageal carcinoma, and 0%, 1.6% ,5.3% and 10.0% (x2= 5.96 ,P = 0. 051 ) for low-er thoracic esophageal carcinoma. The lymph node metastasis ratios were 9.1%, 11.6% and 11.7% in pa-tients with tumor ≤3 cm,3-5 cm and ≥5 cm,respectively (x2 =3.93,P=0. 140), and were much higher in stage Ⅲ disease than those in stage 0 to Ⅱ (19.3% vs4.8% ;x2 =131.06,P=0.000). Conclusions he pattern of lymph node metastasis is complex and extensive in patients with thoracic esophageal carcinoma. For upper and middle thoracic esophageal carcinoma, the extended prophylactic portal is suggested and the superior mediastinum is an important target area. For the lower thoracic esophageal carcinoma,it seems that regional fields could be applied. Post-operative radiotherapy should be performed in stage Ⅲ disease because of the high lymph node metastasis ratio.

This article reports the investigation of the effect of carvedilol (Car) on T-type calcium current (I(Ca,T)) of noninfarcted ventricular myocytes in rabbit models of healed myocardial infarction (HMI). Rabbits with left anterior descending artery ligation were prepared and allowed to recover for 8 weeks, as HMI group. Animals undergoing an identical surgical procedure without coronary ligation were served as the sham-operated group (sham group). Whole cell voltage-clamp techniques were used to measure and compare currents in cells from the different groups. Noting that I(Ca,T) density in HMI cells increased markedly to -2.36 +/- 0.12 pA/pF (at -30 mV) compared with cells of sham, where little I(Ca,T) (-0.35 +/- 0.02 pA/pF) was observed. Meanwhile, further analysis revealed a significant hyperpolarizing shift of steady-state activation curve of I(Ca,T) in HMI cells, where the time constants of deactivation were prolonged and the time of recovery from inactivation was shortened. Finally, the amplitude of I(Ca,T) was increased. Carvedilol (1 micromol x L(-1)) was found to decrease the amplitude of I(Ca,T) to -1.38 +/- 0.07 pA/pF through inhibiting process of I(Ca,T) activation. Furthermore, carvedilol delayed recovery from inactivation of I(Ca,T) and shortened the time constants of deactivation in HMI cells. This study suggested that the application of carvedilol in HMI cells contributes to the dynamic changes in I(Ca,T) and may account for reduction of incidence of arrhythmia after myocardial infarction.

Objective:To investigate the effect of nuclear transcription factor kappa B (NF-κB)/NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing protein 3 (NLRP3) pathway on lipid deposition and autophagy related protein expressions in aortic atherosclerosis mice. Methods:Ten 6-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were used as control group, and 20 male apolipoprotein E gene knockout ( ApoE-/-) mice at the same age were randomly divided into AS group and bortezomib (BTZ) group ( n=10). Mice in the AS group and BTZ group were fed with high-fat diet for 8 weeks; and then, mice in the BTZ group were injected intraperitoneally with 50 μg/kg BTZ (twice a week, for 4 weeks), while mice in the AS group were injected with same amount of saline. The general states of mice in each group were observed during the experiment process. Twelve weeks after intervention, the body weight and the levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were measured; the pathological morphology and lipid deposition of plaques at the aortic roots were observed by oil red O staining and HE staining; the expressions of NF-κB and NLRP3 were detected by immunohistochemistry; the expressions of Beclin-1, P62, and Atg12 were measured by Western blotting. Results:After 12 weeks of intervention, the body weight, contents of TC and LDL, pathological degrees, proportion of lipid deposition, positive expressions of NF-κB and NLRP3, and P62 protein expression in the AS group and BTZ group were significantly higher than those in the control group, while these indexes in the BTZ group were significantly lower than those in the AS group ( P<0.05); HDL content, protein expression levels of Beclin-1 and Atg12 in the AS group and BTZ group was significantly lower than that in the control group, while these indexes in the BTZ group were significantly higher than those in the AS group ( P<0.05). Conclusion:Inhibition of NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway can reduce lipid deposition by regulating lipid content and mediate the autophagy related protein expressions to promote autophagy, thereby inhibiting the process of AS.
