1.EFFECT OF r-IRRADIATION ON THE METABOLISM OF ASCORBIC ACID

Guinea pigs were given orally with a daily dose of 0.5 mg ascorbic acid per 100 g body weight 20 days before and 4 days after a whole-body r-irradiation and then injected subcutaneously with 10 mg ascorbic acid at 24 hours intervals. During the injection period, the daily urinary output of total ascorbic acid in the animals irradiated with 500 or 1000 r was significantly higher than that in controls, but the difference of 24 hours excretions of total ascorbic acid between the group irradiated with 150 or 250 r and the control group was not statistically significant.As shown in the urinary output of dehydroascorbic acid and diketo- gulonic acid estimated by our modified Roe's method, r-irradiation has no effect on its excretion in guinea pigs and rats.The levels of ascorbic acid in plasma, spleen and adrenals were significantly lower in the irradiated group than in the control group, but might increase with the increase of the injected dose of ascorbic acid.
2.The effect of intermittent deferoxamine therapy on relieving iron overload in children with ? thalassemia

Objective To evaluate the effect of the intermittent deferomamine(DF) therapy on relieving iron overload caused by transfusion in children with ? thalassemia.Methods Sixteen children who were finally diagnosed as ? thalassemia major were treated with deferomamine for 124 times totally to low the iron overload. The serum iron(SI), serum ferritin(SF) and urine ferritin were detected each time with radio-immunity technique and difference was compared before and after treatment. Meanwhile, weather DF involved children′s liver and renal function was observed in whole procedure.Results Iron overload exists in 16 cases of ? thalassemia major children by a long- term hypertransfusion therapy, with average level SI 33.69?6.72 mmol/L,SF 441.19? 54.70 ?g/L,urine ferritin 8.64?6.79 ?g/L. The difference was significant (paired-samples t test,t =6.173 P 0.05).Conclusion The study suggest that intermittent low-dose DF therapy is effective for iron overload caused by transfusion in ? thalassemia children, without apparent side effects.
3.Age assessment by three-dimensional reconstructions of pubis symphysis via magnetic resonance imaging

Objective To establish a method of quick three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of pubic symphysis based on magnetic resonance imaging. Methods The pelvis images of adult male were generated on a 3.0 T scanner using a T1 Gradient Echo FLASH-3D (T1- FL3D) sequence and imported the images into medical image control system. Segmentation of binaryzation threshold was conducted and pelvic soft tissue image was extracted by regional growth, 3D structure model of pubic symphysis was obtained by Boolean operation. The 3D structure model of pubic symphysis was established by the noise reduction of reverse engineering software. And compared with the 3D reconstruction model pubic bone CT scan. Results The morphological characters of the MRI pubic symphysis 3D model, such as the ridges and furrows on the symphysial surface, lower extremity, dorsal margin (beveling), margin (beveling) and pubic tubercle, were highly consistent with the morphological characters of the 3D model established by CT scan. Conclusion MRI scan can be used to reconstruct the 3D structure of pubic symphysis quickly and effectively, and it can provide a safe radiation-free 3D visualization imaging technique for forensic age estimation for the living.
4.Application of the China Infectious Diseases Automated-alert and Response System in Guangxi, 2009-2011.

OBJECTIVETo analyze and further improvement the application of the China Infectious Diseases Automated-alert and Response System (CIDARS) in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
METHODSResults related to the amount of signal, proportion of signal responded, time to signal response, manner of signal verification and on each signal of Guangxi in CIDARS from 2009 to 2011 were described. Performance was compared between the periods of pre/ post the adjustment of parameters in CIDARS on December 10, 2010.
RESULTSA total of 29 788 signals were generated on 16 infectious diseases in the system in Guangxi. 100% signals had been responded with the median time to response as 1.5 hours. The average amount of signal per county per week was 1.7;with 624 signals(2.09%)verified as suspected outbreaks preliminarily and 191 outbreaks of 9 diseases were finally confirmed by further field investigation. The sensitivity of CIDARS was 89.25% , and the timeliness of detection was 2.8 d. After adjusting the parameter of CIDARS, the number of signals reduced, and the sensitivity and timeliness of detection improved for most of the diseases.
CONCLUSIONThe signals of CIDARS were responded timely, and the performance of CIDARS might be improved by adjusting the parameters of early-warning model, which helped enhance the ability of outbreaks-detection for local public health departments. However the current proportion of false positive signals still seemed to be high, suggesting that both the methods and parameters should be improved, according to the characteristics of different diseases.

5.Expression and effect of Caspase-3 in neurons after tractive spinal cord injury in rats.

OBJECTIVETo investigate Caspase-3 expression and its role in neuronal apoptosis.
METHODSThe T13-L2 spinal cord of rats was injured by traction after the amplitude of P1-N1 wave, monitored by a cortical somatosensory evoked potential (CSEP) monitor, decreased to seventy percent of that before operation. Then rats were killed in 6 h, 1 d, 4 d, 7 d, 14 d and 21 d respectively after operation. Flow cytometer terminal deoxynucleotldyl transferease-mediated biotinylated deoxynuridine triphosphate nick end labeling (TUNEL), Caspase-3 activity assay and immunohistochemical method were applied to investigate Caspase-3 expression in the spinal cord tissue and to study neuronal apoptosis in rats.
RESULTSAfter spinal cord injury, apoptotic cells detected by flow cytometry and TUNEL-positive cells were significantly more, and positive immunohistochemical staining of Caspase-3 and Caspase-3 activity were significantly higher in Group injury than in Groups control and laminectomy, respectively (P > 0.05, P > 0.01). Similar trend of changes was noticed in apoptotic cells, TUNEL-positive cells and positive immunohistochemical staining of Caspase-3, all of which reached their respective peak 7 days after operation. Caspase-3 activity reached its peak, however, 4 days postoperatively.
CONCLUSIONSIncreased expression and activity of Caspase-3 protein in neurons after tractive spinal cord injury is the biochemical signal of early spinal cell apoptosis. It is of great significance for understanding the mechanism of spinal cord injury.

6.Comparison of levobupivacaine, ropivacaine and racemic bupivacaine in patient-controlled epidural analgesia after cesarean section.

OBJECTIVETo compare efficacy and side effects of patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) with levobupivacaine, ropivacaine and racemic bupivacaine after cesarean section.
METHODSIn this prospective, randomized double-blind study, 90 ASA I-II full-term nulliparous women (aged 25-38 years with body weight of 59-87 kg) undergoing elective cesarean section under spinal-epidural anesthesia equally allocated into 3 groups. PCEA was administered with 0.125% levobupivacaine and 20 microg/ml morphine (group L, n=30), 0.125% ropivacaine and 20 microg/ml morphine (group R, n=30), and 0.125% bupivacaine and 20 microg/ml morphine (group B, n=30), respectively. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score, satisfaction rate, patients' overall impression of treatment, modified Bromage motor score, and incidence of side effects were recorded at regular intervals after operation.
RESULTSThe three groups were comparable with respect to the efficacy of analgesia, patients' overall impression of treatment, motor blockade and side effects. There was significant difference in patients' satisfaction rate between group R (70%) and the other two groups (93.3% in group L and 96.6% in group B, P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONPCEA with 0.125% levobupivacaine and morphine 20 microg/ml produces better analgesic effect with little side effects after cesarean section.

7.Subciliary incision and lateral cantholysis in rigid internal fixation of zygomatic complex fractures.

OBJECTIVETo introduce the technique of subciliary incision and lateral cantholysis with tri-dimension reduction and rigid internal fixation to treat zygomatic complex fractures.
METHODSThe subciliary incision and lateral cantholysis combined with tri-dimension reduction and rigid internal fixation of zygomatic complex fractures with titanium microplates were applied in 56 patients with zygomatic complex fractures. Another lateral eyebrow incision or sublabial incision was used to simplify the operation.
RESULTSThe postoperative follow-up period ranged from 6 months to 5 years. During the follow-up period, all the patients had satisfying postoperative results. All clinical symptoms disappeared except the numbness in the infraorbital region in 2 patients. In 94.6% patients no complications such as obvious scar, ectropion, entropion or blepharoedema were found, only 5.4% of the patients had slight ectropion 6 months after operation.
CONCLUSIONSThe subciliary incision and lateral cantholysis have many advantages such as invisible scar, sufficient exposure, minimal injury, and few complications and combined with rigid internal fixation with titanium microplates this technique could be used as one of the routine operation methods to treat zygomatic complex fractures.

8.Immediate maxillary reconstruction after tumor excision by using lined buccal-fat-pad flap with bone graft technique.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the role of buccal-fat-pad flap in the lined coverage of the maxillary bone graft for the maxillary reconstruction after the tumor excision.
METHODSBased on the cadaver anatomical observation of the buccal-fat-pad, 38 patients with the maxillary tumors were undertaking the treatment in this paper. Under general anesthesia, the buccal-fat-pad flap was elevated and transferred to the anterior or nasal cavities as a line of the sinus after the tumor was immediately excised through an intro-oral or external approach. The bone from the ribs was then grafted in the place for the maxillary support.
RESULTSAfter the anatomical evaluation, 38 patients were carried out the operation successfully. All of the grafted bones were well covered without bone exposure. The aesthetic appearance was achieved.
CONCLUSIONBone graft lined by the pedicled buccal fat pad flap may be a safe and good method for reconstruction of the maxilla with a lower rate of re-absorption and sequestration.

9.Mechanism of the apoptosis of rat pancreas islet β cell strain (INS-1 cells) induced by sodium arsenite.

OBJECTIVETo study mechanism of the apoptosis of rat pancreas islet β cell strain (INS-1 cells) induced by sodium arsenite.
METHODSINS-1 cells were exposed to sodium arsenite at the different concentrations. MTT assay was used to detect the viability of INS-1 cells. The potentials on mitochondrial membrane and lysosome membrane of INS-1 cells were determined with the fluorescence spectrophotometer. The apoptotic levels of INS-1 cells exposed to sodium arsenite were observed by a fluorescence microscope and flow cytometry.
RESULTSAfter exposure to sodium arsenite, the viability of INS-1 cells significantly decreased with the doses of sodium arsenite. At 24 h after exposure, the OD values of the mitochondrial membrane potentials declined observably with the doses of sodium arsenite (P < 0.01). At 48 h after exposure, the OD values of the lysosome membrane potentials significantly increased with the doses of sodium arsenite (P < 0.01). At 72 h after exposure, the apoptotic cells were observed under a fluorescence microscope and enhanced with the doses of sodium arsenite. The apoptosis cells with light blue, karyopyknosis, karyorrhexis, apoptotic body and chromatin concentration appeared. The results detected with flow cytometry indicated that after exposure, the apoptotic INS-1E cells significantly increased with the doses of sodium arsenite.
CONCLUSIONSThe sodium arsenite can induce the apoptosis of INS-1 cells through the mitochondria-lysosome pathway.

10.Dietary patterns and its influencing factors among freshmen students in college

Objective To investigate the dietary pattern in college freshmen students and to analyze the influencing factors on their dietary patterns. Methods A questionnaire survey on situation of dietary pattern and influencing factors was conducted among 1319 freshmen students.Results Four major dietary patterns were noticed and they were: Ⅰ , high consumption in hamburger,fried food, nuts, biscuit, chocolate, cola, coffee, sugars, Ⅱ, high consumption in pork, mutton, beef,poultry meat, animal liver, Ⅲ, high consumption in fresh fruits, eggs, fish and shrimps, kelp laver and sea fish, milk and dairy products, beans and bean products, Ⅳ, high consumption in rice and grain,fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, pork. Risk factors on dietary pattern were presented as follows: ( 1 )boys: having the food pattern Ⅰ and Ⅱ showed a strong positive association with the place where they live (OR= 1.67, 95%CI: 0.87-3.19; OR= 1.51,95%CI: 0.79-2.88), eating place (OR=1.63,95%CI: 1.O3-2.59; OR= 1.83, 95%CI: 1.04-3.23), level of mother' s education (OR=2.52,95%CI: 1.07-5.95; OR=3.38, 95%CI: 1.50-7.63), family income (OR=2.24, 95%CI: 1.30-3.88;OR=3.06, 95% CI: 1.77-5.29) and the status of passive smoking (OR= 1.80, 95%CI: 0.70-4.59;OR=1.83, 95%CI: 0.75-4.45). Inverse correlations was found on the level of mother's education (OR=0.56,95%CI: 0.17-1.79). The food pattern Ⅳ showed a strong positive association with place of eating(OR= 1.83,95%CI: 1.04-3.23) but having an inverse correlation with the level of mother's education (OR=0.56, 95%CI: 0.17-1.79). (2)girls when compared with boys, the food pattern Ⅰ showed minor association with the places of living and eating; while the food pattern Ⅱ and Ⅲ had minor association with the status of passive smoking. Conclusion Socio-demographic factors and lifestyle had influenced on the dietary patterns among college freshmen students who should be guided to have a reasonable, balanced diet in the college.
