Glutamate is not only the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system of human and mammalian animals but also participates the synaptic transmission of peripheral sensory system.How-ever, overstimulation of glutamate receptors by excessive glutamate leads to glutamate excitotoxicity. This review discusses the neurotransmission of glutamate in the vestibular end organs and the excitotoxicity by glutamate on them in motion sickness as well as the antimotion sickness drugs asso-ciated with glutamate neurotransmission.
