1.COVID-19, Home Training for Patients with Diabetes Mellitus
Journal of Korean Diabetes 2021;22(2):71-76
Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, people's physical activity has declined by 35% because their time spent at home has increased. Decreased physical activity can increase both the number of people with type 2 diabetes annually by more than 11.1 million and the number of deaths by more than 1.7 million. Thus, exercise is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in relation to diabetes. If a person with the COVID-19 virus lacks exercise, the risk of hospitalization is increased by 2.2 times and the risk of death by 2.5 times. In the context of COVID-19, the purpose of home training for patients with diabetes mellitus is to reduce body fat percentage, increase muscle function and mass, and improve insulin resistance. The recommended home training program is a circuit-based exercise regime that combines aerobic exercise and strength exercise. In addition, muscle stretching exercises are recommended for home training programs to increase muscle function.
2.Induction of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cell Cycle Arrest and Apoptosis by Dendropanax morbifera Leveille Leaf Extract via the PI3K/AKT/mTOR Pathway
Journal of Cancer Prevention 2023;28(4):185-193
Liver cancer is prevalent worldwide and associated with a high mortality rate. Therefore, developing novel drugs derived from natural products to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy is urgently needed. In this study, the inhibitory effect of Dendropanax morbifera Leveille extract (DME) on growth of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells and its underlying mechanisms were investigated.DME suppressed the growth, migration, and invasion of SK-Hep1 human HCC cells. It also reduced the expression of the G0/G1 phase regulator proteins cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 4, cyclin D, CDK2, and cyclin E, thereby inducing G0/G1 arrest. Moreover, DME treatment reduced the expression of antiapoptotic proteins, including caspase-9, caspase-3, PARP, and Bcl-2 and increased the expression of the proapoptotic protein, Bax. DME also increased reactive oxygen species production and reduced the cellular uptake of rhodamine 123. DME treatment increased the levels of p-p38 and p-FOXO3a in a dose-dependent manner and decreased those of p-PI3K, p-AKT, p-mTOR, and p-p70 in SK-Hep1 cells. In addition, combined treatment with DME and LY294002, an AKT inhibitor, significantly reduced p-AKT levels. In summary, these results show that the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway is involved in DME-mediated inhibition of proliferation, migration, and invasiveness, and induction of apoptosis of HCC cells.

5.Experiences of Inpatients Living with Lung Cancer in South Korea
Asian Oncology Nursing 2020;20(1):28-38
Purpose:
This study aimed to examine the processes of adaptation lung cancer patients undergo by examining their social interactions with medical staff, families, and other patients during hospitalization.
Methods:
Data were collected from February 2017 to January 2018 for a qualitative research study based on in-depth interviews with 10 participants who were inpatients at a cancer treatment hospital. Data were analyzed using the grounded theory of Corbin and Strauss.
Results:
Through comparative analysis, we identified the central phenomenon of the study was, ‘living in a body that is not related to one's own will.’ The causal conditions were, ‘hit by a bolt out of the blue’ and ‘a disease that I do not want to inform others of.’ The contextual conditions were, ‘an encounter with reality’ and ‘breaking down the wall of fear.’ The intervention conditions included, ‘finding comfort in adversity,’ ‘a loaf of bread is better than the song of many birds,’ and ‘the communion of the same situation.’ Action/interaction strategies included ‘sharing information,’ ‘a word of encouragement,’ and ‘accepting the wave of change.’ Finally, the perceived consequences were ‘life redesign’ and ‘a life journey with limited time.’
Conclusion
This study describes the processes underlying how patients find meaning in their lives after a diagnosis of lung cancer. Based on their experiences, it is necessary to offer nursing interventions including admission rooms, equipment, and instruments to meet the unique needs of patients. The findings indicate that inpatient treatment for lung cancer needs more meaningful and effective management.
6.Myricetin Inhibits Angiogenesis by Inducing Apoptosis and Suppressing PI3K/Akt/mTOR Signaling in Endothelial Cells.
Journal of Cancer Prevention 2017;22(4):219-227
BACKGROUND: Myricetin has been shown to possess potential antiangiogenic effects in endothelial cells. However, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Therefore, we evaluated its antiangiogenic effects in human umbilical vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs). METHODS: HUVECs were cultured in endothelial cell growth medium-2 to induce proliferation and angiogenesis and treated with different doses of myricetin (0.25, 0.5, and 1 μM) for 24 hours. Cell proliferation was analyzed by the MTT and lactate dehydrogenase release assays; angiogenesis was determined by the tube formation assay. In addition, cell signaling pathways related to angiogenesis were investigated by Western blotting. RESULTS: Myricetin induced apoptosis and procaspase-3 cleavage though the induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). It significantly inhibited cell migration, tube formation, and PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling in HUVECs. CONCLUSIONS: Myricetin exerts antiangiogenic effects by inducing ROS-mediated apoptosis and inhibiting PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling in HUVECs.

8.University students' eating behavior and consumer attitude in social commerce service.
Journal of Nutrition and Health 2014;47(6):426-434
PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to investigate eating behavior of university students through social commerce and to analyze factors affecting university students' attitude regarding social commerce. METHODS: Questionnaires were distributed to 445 university students in Changwon, Korea from March 28 to April 28, 2013. A total of 339 questionnaires were used for the final analysis, which excluded improperly-completed questionnaires. RESULTS: The major factor considered for eating behavior through social commerce was price (37.2%). Purchasing experiences of foodservice products according to types of foodservice were 64.9% for coffee shop, 59.3% for fast food restaurant, 53.4% for family restaurant, 46.0% for specialty restaurant, 35.7% for pizza restaurant, 35.4% for buffet, and 31.9% for bakery. Factors affecting satisfaction with social commerce for purchasing foodservice products were 'service quality of foodservice company', 'communication of social commerce', and 'discount rate of social commerce'. Factors affecting repurchasing intention of foodservice products through social commerce were 'service quality of foodservice company', 'site design of social commerce', and 'discount rate of social commerce'. CONCLUSION: In order to increase satisfaction with social commerce, 'service quality of foodservice company', 'communication of social commerce', and 'discount rate of social commerce' should be increased. And, to increase repurchasing intention of social commerce, 'service quality of foodservice company', 'site design of social commerce', and 'discount rate of social commerce' should be increased. In addition, two factors 'service quality of foodservice' and 'discount rate of social commerce' were found to have an effect on satisfaction and repurchasing intention of social commerce. For development of social commerce and foodservice industry, cooperative relationship between social commerce and foodservice industry is needed, and a reasonable price strategy should be established. The university students considered price as a major factor of eating behaviors and did not consider menu and taste as a major factor. From a longer perspective, such an eating behavior would have an effect on university students' dietary life and it would cause nutrition and health problems for university students. Thus, it implied that further studies from the perspectives of nutrition and health regarding eating behavior through social commerce service should be conducted.

10.Knowledge, Attitudes and Perceptions of Nurses on Personal Protective Equipment: Response to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus.
Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing 2016;23(4):402-410
PURPOSE: Personal protective equipment (PPE) is critical to protect healthcare workers from pandemic outbreaks. This study was designed to identify nurses' knowledge, attitude and perceptions on PPE. METHODS: Data were collected from 154 nurses working at a tertiary general hospital, where positively diagnosed and suspected patients were accepted and admitted during the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus outbreak in 2015. The PPE tool consists of 20 items for knowledge, and 5 each for attitudes and perceptions. RESULTS: Overall, knowledge for PPE was higher thanmoderate (76.95/100), but there was a lack for items related to powered air purifying respirator (PAPR). For attitudes, willingness to work in pandemic outbreaks was the most positive (4.04/5.00). Goggles and PAPR were perceived as themost uncomfortable barriers to work. There was no correlation between knowledge, attitude and perceptions, despite a strong positive correlation between attitude and perceptions. PPE training was identified as a factor to improve knowledge and attitudes on PPE. CONCLUSION: To respond to pandemic influenza, nurses need to expand their knowledge on PPE up to Level C, and be updated through regular training. Study findings suggest that repetitive studies targeting nurses and other healthcare workers at various hospital settings are necessary.
