3.Effect of Human Seminal Plasma on Cytokine Prodection and Induction of Active Systemic Anaphylaxis in Mice.

Human seminal plasrna (HSP) is mixture of secretion derived from various glands associated with male reproductive tract which comprises approximately 80-90% of the volume of normal ejaculate. The present study was undertaken in an effort to explore the effect of HSP pretreatment on the production of IL-1B, TNF-a and IL-12, in mice, and to investigate if HSP may cause to induce active systemic anaphylaxis (ASA) in mice. In addition, effects of HSP pretreatment on contact hypersensitivity to trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB), antibody response to polyvinylpyrroridone (PVP), a thymus-independent antigen and on ASA induced by egg albumin (OVA) were also studied in this study. For the experiments of contact hypersensitivity, antibody response and cytokine production, mice were pretreated i.p. daily with 0.3ml of HSP or sterile saline alone (control) for 3 consecutive days before antigen sensitization or lipopolysaccharide injection for the cytokine induction. For the experiments of OVA- induced anaphylaxis, mice were pretreated by a single s.c. injection of HSP 0.3ml per mouse before sensitization. For induction of ASA in mice by HSP, a group of mice were sensitized i.p. 2 consecutive days with 0.3ml of HSP and one day with 0.3 ml of HSP plus 2x10(9) B. pertussis and 1.0 mg of alum (schedule A) or another group of mice were sensitized i.p. with a single i.p. injection of 0.3 ml of HSP with 2x10' B. pertussis and 1.0 mg of alum (schedule B). All sensitized and unsensitized control mice were challenged i.v. with 0.2ml of HSP 14 days after HSP sensitization, and mortality were observed. It was found that HSP pretreatment inhibited the production of IL-lB, TNF-a and IL-12, and also inhibited OVA-induced ASA, contact hypersensitivity to TNCB and anti-PVP antibody production. Interestingly, ASA was induced by HSP irrespective of the applied sensitization schedule. Taken together, this study may provide the direct evidences that HSP may inhibit the production of IL-1B, TNF-a and IL-12 and this may be the first to show the induction of ASA by HSP in mice.

4.A Clinical Study on Cerebellar Vascular Accident.

A clinical study was done on 16 cases of cerebellar hemorrhage and 3 cases of cerebellar infarction which were diagnosed with brain CT scan at Keimyung university Dongsan hospital from July 1981 to June 1985 and conclusions obtained are as follows. 1. The incidence of cerebellar hemorrhage and infarction was 3.5% and 0.6% of all spontaneous intracranial parenchymal hemorrhage and infarction, respectively. 2. The most prevalent age group was 7th decade and sex ratio was higher in male in cerebellar stroke. 3. Major single percipitating factor of cerebellar stroke was hypertension. 4. Most of cerebellar stroke showed catastrophic or sudden onset type. 5. The most common initial symptoms of cerebellar stroke were nausea and vomiting, followed by headache and dizziness or vertigo, in order of frequency. 6. The most common neurologic signs on admission were impaired consciousness, constricted pupil with preserved light reflex and cerebellar signs. 7. The common site of cerebellar hemorrhage was right hemisphere, followed by vermis and left hemisphere, in order of frequency, and that of cerebellar infarction was right posterior hemisphere. 8. The better the consciousness on admission, the better the outcome of cerebellar stroke. 9. The following parameters indicated good prognosis with medical therapy, so called benign cerebellar hemorrhage: clear consciousness on admission, gradual onset type, less than 20cc of hematoma, no or mild hydrocephalus, no ventricular hematoma, no vermis involvement on CT scan.

6.Epithelioid Angiomyolipoma of the Kidney: A case report.

Angiomyolipoma is considered by many authors to be a hamartoma, occurring in a sporadic form or in association with tuberous sclerosis. This lesion consists of thick walled blood vessels, smooth muscle, and mature adipose tissue in varying amounts. We have experienced a case of the angiomyolipoma composed of monotypic epithelioid cells. The patient was a 69-year-old female. Clinically, there was no evidence of tuberous sclerosis. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of polygonal cells with abundant eosinophilic granular or clear cytoplasm, pleomorphic nuclei, prominent nucleoli, and multinucleated giant cells. The tumor cells showed positive reaction for HMB45, CD68, smooth muscle actin, and S-100, and negative reaction for epithelial membrane antigen, cytokeratin, vimentin, desmin, CD34, estrogen receptor, and progesterone receptor. Ultrastructual analysis showed the presence of glycogen, mitochondria, and other microorganelles in neoplastic cells. Melanosome or premelanosome was not identified.

7.Studies on the Effects of Various Topical Phototoxic Drugs and UVA on Melanocytes of C57 BL Mice.

One hundred sixteen C57 BL mice were painted with either 8-MOP, 5-MOP or TMP solution in concentrations of 0.02%, 0.1%, and 0.5% each and UVA irradiated. Skin biopsies were performed at 1, 3, 5 and 7 weeks after LJVA irradiation. The results measuring the number, area, and perimeter of the melanocytes after topical PLJVA were higher in the TMP-painted group than in the 8-MOP or 5-MOP painted groups. In all groups, the weekly changes showed an increasing value through five weeks. In comparing the drug concentrations used, 0.1% of chemicals produced the same or higher values than 0.5%. There have been few studies on the effects of 5-MOP in photochemotherapy. In tho study 5-MOP produced a pigment-producing effect similar to 8-MOP. Therefore, if topical PIJVA with 5-MOP is used in clinical practice, we could expect a significant therapeutic effect in vitiligo.
