OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study attempts to determine the endocrinologic characteristics and changes in glucose metabolism before/during pregnancy according to different body weights in women with Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). METHODS: 94 women dia with PCOS were evaluated through measuring serum hormone levels and oral glucose tolerance tests preconceptionally and gestationally. RESULTS: In patients who were of normal weight showed significantly increased serum LH levels compared to those who were overweight (12.8+/-0.9 Vs. 7.1+/-0.8 mIU/ml, p= 0.000), and the serum levels of insulin was increased significantly in the overweight group (7.1+/-0.7 Vs. 15.2+/-2.8 ulU/ml, p= 0.000). the IGFBP-I (32.8+/-10.6 Vs. 8.3+/-2.5 ng/ml, p=0.034) and SHBG (55.8+/-4.2 Vs. 37.1+/-3.1 nmol/ml, p= 0.001) were significantly lower in the ovnweight group. The oral glucose tolerance test before/after pregnancy showed increased frequency of abnormal glucose metabolism, in both of the non-obese group (38.8%, 26,9%) and the obese group (64.2%, 53.9%) compared with normal population. CONCLUSION: It is thought that in the normal weight group with polycystic ovarian syndrome androgen production is stimulated in the theca cells by abnormally high LH secretion, while in the overweight group the hyperinsulinemia state which decreases the SHBG and IGFBP-I, lead to increase biologically active hee androgens and IGF-I and increase insulin binding to its receptor. And during/before pregnancy, women with PCOS showed that incidence of abnormal glucose metabolism was significantly increased in both of non-obese and obese groups.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the effect of Taping therapy on Range of Motion, pain, and depression in stroke patients in the home without complete recovery as a means of nursing intervention. METHOD: Twenty seven subjects out of fifty four people who were attending in the stroke self-help group in one community health center in S city were asked to participate in this Quai-experimental study. The Taping therapy was a method that stick to the illness area and the point of pressure pain, the elastic and cross tape without medicine treatment with domestic products. Nursing intervention was independently completed by researcher once a week over two period of 12 weeks from September 2001 to March 2002 year. Data were analyzed using the SPSS win. The homogeneity between the experimental group and control grouup was test by x2 and t-test. The difference of experimental before and after were tested by the unpaired t-test. RESULT: The shoulder joint flexion and abduction, the elbow joint flexion and extension, the hip joint flexion, and the flexion of knee joint in the ROM of the experimental group were significantly improved over those of the control group. In difference of pain, rest and painful movement, the experimental group were significantly decreased over those of the control group. The difference of depression in experimental before and after was significantly decreased in the experimental group over those of the control group. CONCLUSION: The Taping therapy intervention proved effect pain relief and depression decrease as well as promote of range of motion.

BACKGROUND: Condylomata acuminata is a sexually transmitted cisease which is caused by the human papillomavirus(HPV). The types of HPV causing condylomata acuminata are HPV 6,11,16,18. HPV 16 and 18 are related to anogenital carcinoma. OBJECTIVE: The goals of this study were to determine the types cif HPV in condylomata acuminata, and to investigate the relationship between condylomata acuminata and anogenital carcinoma. MEHTODS: Polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment le igth polymorphisms were performed in the paraffin-embedded tissues of 17 cases of condylomata acciminata. RESULTS: HPV DNA was detected in all of 17 cases of condylomata accuminata tested. HPV 6 and 11 were found in 53% (9/17) and 41% (7/17) of the samples, respectiiely. HPV 16 and/or 18, which are related to anogenital carcinovia, were not detected, except in one case in which HPV 16 was found to be superimposed with HPV 6 and 11. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that most of condylomata acumirata are caused by HPV 16 and 11, and there is not so much risk of this disease transforming into the aiogenital carcinoma.

Although acquired ichthyosis has been associated with a number of systemic illnesses, an association with sarcoidosis has rarely been reported. We report a patient with aquired ichthyosis of the lower and upper extrimities whose diagnosis of cutaneous sarcoidosis was confirmed by histologic examination. Systemic involvement in the patient revealed occular, pulmonary and nerve disease. A diagnosis of sarcoidosis must be considered when a patient presents with acquired ichthyosis.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the socio-personal and clinical factors that can affect preoperative quality of life to determine how to improve preoperative quality of life in patients with gastric cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The preoperative quality of life data of 200 patients (68 females and 132 males; mean age 58.9+/-12.6 years) with gastric cancer were analyzed according to socio-personal and clinical factors. The Korean versions of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire Core (QLQ) 30 and the EORTC QLQ-STO22, a gastric cancer-specific module, were used to assess quality of life. Patients were asked to complete the questionnaire preoperatively by themselves. RESULTS: Patients with a higher academic background and stage I disease tended to have higher global health status scores. Highly educated younger men had better physical functioning scores. Highly educated and well-nourished patients with stage I cancer had higher role functioning scores. Married patients had better emotional scores. The symptom scales were affected by sex, age, education level, nutrition, and cancer stage. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative quality of life in patients with gastric cancer can be improved by nutritional support and treatment of symptoms caused by disease progression. Psychological support may be helpful for patients with a poor quality of life.

Pustulotic arthro-osteitis is a rheumatic syndrome of unknovn cause, characterised by an inflammatory osteitis of the sternocostoclavicular region and pustuosis palmaris et plantaris. Although many ases of the disease have been reported in Japan, it, has not been reported in Korea so far. Three cases of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris associated i rith sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis or pustulotic arthro-osteitis are presented.
