OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to evaluate whether maternal body mass index measured before pregnancy are associated with an increased risk of cesarean delivery. METHODS: Maternal weight and height were prospectively collected on 819 women who delivered between 37 weeks and 42 weeks in the College of Medicine, Catholic University of Taegu-Hyosung. Statistical analysis was done using Chi-square tests, prepregnancy maternal weight and height were used to calculate the body mass index, and its contribution to the risk of cesarean delivery was determined. Women with congenital anomaly and pregestational diabetes were exclude from analysis. RESULTS: The analysis of risk factors for cesarean delivery in the 819 women revealed a decreased risk of cesarean delivery with maternal age < or =20 years and multiparity; increased risk of cesarean delivery was noted with maternal age >30 years. Increase in prepregnancy maternal body mass index and total weight gain were significantly associated with increase in the odds of cesarean delivery. CONCLUSION: The risk of cesarean delivery is associated with incremental changes in maternal weight and body mass index before pregnancy after adjustment for potential confounding factors. Prepregnancy counseling about optimizing maternal weight and monitoring weight gain during pregnancy to decrease the risk of cesarean delivery are supported by this study.

In recent years pulmonary function teste have had a wide application in clinical pulmonary diseases. By combining a number of different pulmonary function tests, abnormality present in a particular pa tient can be defined. This narrows the list of possible diagnosis and allows to determine accurately the degree of impairment and assess the pesponse to therapy. To assess the pulmonary function in a patient and label as abnormal, it becomes important to define the range of expected values for a normal population. These normal'predicted values'vary according to sex and prowth, i.e., age, height, and weight, particularly in children. In addition, race and geography have been consistently shown to bc an important determinant of lung function. In order to obtain normal perdicted values of pulmonary function tests in Korean school-aged children, we performed spirometry-based pulmonary function tests on the normal healthy 2022 children, age from 6 through 15, and analyzed the data, with the parameters such as sex, age, height, weight, and body surface area. We calculated each of their simple and complex linear and logarithmic regression equations setting the predicted values. The results are as follows: 1) Predicted values of pulmonary function test items were generally higher in boys than those of girls. 2) A correlation coefficient to the parameters examined was the highest in FEV1, then those of FVC, FEF25,PEFR, FEF50, MMEF, AND FEF75 follow in order. 3) Of the parameters examined, height had the highest correlation coefficient consistently in all pulmonary function test items. 4) As compared with the inland and overseas data, some differences were observed.

This study was conducted to assess the positional changes of hyoid bone following the use of activator in Angles class III malocclusion patients with functional factors. For this study, 40 Angle's class I patients and 40 Angle's class III patients, totally 80 subjects were used. They are all in Hellman's dental age IIIB-IIIC ranges. In lateral cephalogram to compare Angle's class I group and Angle's class III group, and the positional changes of the hyoid bone before and after the use of activator in Angle's class III malocclusion group. The results were obtained as follows; 1. Comparison of Angle's class I group and Angle's class III group. In comparison to Angle's class I group, hyoid bone is more anteriorly and superiorly positioned in Angle's class III group. The hyoid bone showed reverse inclination to the mandibular plane in Angle's class III malocclusion group. 2. Comparison of the hyoid positional change before and after use of Activator in Angle's class III malocclusion group. The hyoid bone is displaced posteriorly and inferiorly in vertical relationship. The hyoid bone also showed counter-clockwise rotation. 3. No statistical difference was found between after Activator use data of Angle's class III malocclusion group and Angle's class I group. It is concluded that the hyoid bone in Angle's class III malocclusion group changed its position, similar to Angle's class I malocclusion group.

Heterotopic pregnancy occurs when there are coexisiting intrauterine and ectopic pregnances. It occure, more often, due to assisted reproductive technology such as IVF-ET, GIFT and increased pelvic inflammatory diseases. We present a case of heterotopic pregnancy confirmed by surgical removal of ruptured left ovarian pregnancy and sonographic finding of the intrauterine pregnancy following natural conception.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of a logotherapy program entitled 'Finding meaning in my life' for adolescents with terminal cancer. METHODS: A nonequivalent control group, non-synchronized design was conducted with a convenience sample of 44 late adolescents with terminal cancer. The experimental group (n=22) participated in the 'Finding meaning in my life' program which consisted of five-day sessions for one week. The control group (n=22) received the usual nursing care. The effects were measured using adolescent meaning in life (AMIL), and quality of life (QOL) scales. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Chi-square, and t-test using SPSS/PC 17.0 program. RESULTS: There were significant differences in AMIL (t=3.36, p<.05) and QOL (t=2.67, p<.05) between the experimental and control groups. CONCLUSION: Logotherapy is effective in improving the meaning in life and quality of life of late adolescents with terminal cancer, and can be used to prevent existential distress.
