2.A Exploratory Study on the Personality Type, Problematic Drinking Pattern, and Stress Coping Style of the Nasal Bone Fracture Patients Due to Violence.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to identify the personality type, problematic drinking pattern, and stress coping style of the nasal bone fracture patients by comparing those with general fracture patients. METHODS: 50 nasal bone fracture patients due to violence and 50 general fracture patients due to simple trauma, such as fall and traffic accident were conveniently selected. RESULTS: The study results showed that nasal bone fracture patients due to violence significantly presented higher level of A type personality and more problematic drinking pattern than general fracture patients due to simple trauma. Stress coping style, however, did not show significant difference between two groups. CONCLUSION: In order to prepare prevention strategies for basal bone fracture in the future, health education alter problematic drinking habit to sound drinking pattern may be offered and provided nursing interventions tailored to A type personality.

3.Expression of Several Cell Cycle Regulatory Genes in Cultured AT-1 Cardiomyocytes after Formation of Synchronously Beating Sheets.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: AT-1 cells have been derived from the left atrial tissue in which the ANF promoter targeted SV40 large T antigen expression. When cultured, clusters of spontaneously contracting cells were observed after 4-5 days and contiguous sheets of synchronously beating cardiomyocytes were formed after 10 days. In this study, expression of several cell cycle regulatory genes were monitored through Northern blot analyses in AT-1 cells during beating and after formation of beating sheets (BS). MATERIALS AND METHOD: AT-1 RNAs were obtained in 3 days after plating, during beating and after formation of BS, and used for Northern blot analyses. RESULTS: alpha-Cardiac myosin heavy chain expression was prominent in beating cells, as would be expected for this contractile protein isoform but ANF was decreased after beating. Gax was not expressed in cultured AT-1 cells but in AT-1 tumor and murine heart. p53 and p21 were decreased after beating which indicate transcription level of p53 and p21 correlated well in AT-1 cells. In contrast, pRB and p107 were increased after beating but p68 (2.4 kb) which arose by alternative splicing of p107 and lacks the pocket domain B was decreased in beating cells. pTCS2, murine tuberous sclerosis gene, represented similar levels during beating but a little was decreased after formation of BS. mRAD50, the murine homologue of yeast DNA recombinational repair gene RAD50, was increased in beating cells, a similar pattern to p107 and pRB. But the p50 arose by alternative splicing of mRAD50 and has 3' half of mRAD50 had unexpectedly appeared and maintained after beating. CONCLUSION: The expression of cell cycle regulatory genes after beating and formation of BS in AT-1 cells showed gene-specific pattern and the p50 which has homology to the mRAD50 may participate in differentiation of cardiomyocytes.

4.Spontaneously Resolved Neonatal Hemochromatosis.

Neonatal hemochromatosis is a very rare disorder with an unclear etiology with an extremely poor outcome. We report a case of female newborn who presented with direct hyperbilirubinemia without any evidence of congenital infection, immune related hemolysis or exogenous iron uptake. Diagnostic studies revealed highly elevated ferritin level. T2 weighted image of abdominal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed decreased signal intensity of entire left lobe and a part of right lobe of liver with normal spleen. Liver biopsy showed a large amount of hemosiderin in the hepatocytes and Kupffer cells. All the biochemical and excretory liver functions normalized with conservative managements.

5.The Analysis of Co-authorship and Networks among the Korean Pathologists.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the characteristics of the co-authorship and its network within the Korean Pathologists' Society. METHODS: In the KoreaMed database, 11,420 articles and 72,478 authors from 1991 to 2010 were searched. The patterns of co-authorship of the authors and institutions were analyzed to build a network matrix. The network centrality indices were measured with UCINET 6.0 and sociogram, and were drawn with Netdraw 5.0. KeyPlayer 1.44 was used for key player analysis. RESULTS: The number of articles that pathologist participated in increased; however, the number of articles that the pathologists are the first author did not increase. The centrality degrees from 1991 to 2010 were 4.16% and 0.3% for the institutions and authors network, respectively. From 1991 to 2000, Seoul National University had the highest degree of centrality and was a key player. However, from 2001 to 2010, Ulsan replaced the position. For the authors, Chi, Je Geun was highest centrality author and key player during the 1991 to 2000 time period. From 2001 to 2010, Yoo, Jinyoung had the highest degree of centrality and Kim, Na Rae was a key player. Overall, most of the centrality indices were occupied by only a few institutions and authors. CONCLUSIONS: The network among the pathologist society is a typical small world society.
6.Association between Health Behaviors and a Family History of Cancer among Korean Women.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the health-related behaviors related to a family history of cancer (FHCA) among Korean women underwent cancer screening. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 8,956 women who underwent cancer screenings during 2001-2011 at the National Cancer Center, Korea, were analyzed. The association between health-related behaviors and a FHCA were assessed using multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Compared to women with no FHCA, women with FHCA were more likely to smoke (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.32; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06 to 1.65), to be exposed to passive smoking (aOR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.15 to 1.65), and less likely to engage in regular exercise (aOR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.41). Combined effects of selected health behaviors for FHCA were significant, although no statistically significant interactions were observed between selected health behaviors. Compared to women with no FHCA, women with FHCA were more likely to simultaneously smoke and be exposed to passive smoking (aOR, 1.65; 95% CI, 1.17 to 2.31) and to simultaneously smoke and be physically inactive (aOR, 1.62; 95% CI, 1.00 to 2.64). CONCLUSION: The study found that women with a FHCA exhibited unhealthy behaviors compared to women without FHCA. Higher emphasis on lifestyle modifications using a new standardized tool is strongly recommended for those with a FHCA, as well as individuals who are at high risk, together with their family members.

Forty year old woman with dysphagia underwent surgical correction of complete vascular ring formed by right aortic arch, Kommerell's diverticulum and ligamentum arteriosum. Operation consisted of ligamentum division, reduction diverticuloplasty and posterior diverticulopexy via left posterolateral thoracotomy. Dysphagia was relieved postoperatively, and concentic narrowing of esophagus in the level of aortic arch disappeared on postoperative esophagography.

9.Basics of particle therapy I: physics.

With the advance of modern radiation therapy technique, radiation dose conformation and dose distribution have improved dramatically. However, the progress does not completely fulfill the goal of cancer treatment such as improved local control or survival. The discordances with the clinical results are from the biophysical nature of photon, which is the main source of radiation therapy in current field, with the lower linear energy transfer to the target. As part of a natural progression, there recently has been a resurgence of interest in particle therapy, specifically using heavy charged particles, because these kinds of radiations serve theoretical advantages in both biological and physical aspects. The Korean government is to set up a heavy charged particle facility in Korea Institute of Radiological & Medical Sciences. This review introduces some of the elementary physics of the various particles for the sake of Korean radiation oncologists' interest.

10.The Characteristics of a Research Network for Radiation Oncology in Korea.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the structural characteristics of a scientific network of radiation oncology society. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1,512 articles published from 1986 to April 2010 with the terms 'radiation oncology' or 'therapeutic radiology' were obtained in the KoreaMed database. The co-authors were analyzed according to their affiliation, and their relationship was used to build a matrix. With the matrix, centralization indices and the Key Player index were analyzed. We used UCINET 6.0 for the network analysis, Netdraw for determining a sociogram and Key Player 1.44 for the key player analysis. RESULTS: The centralization of the radiation oncology field decreased from 8.29% for the period from 1986~1990 to 1.84% from 2006~2010. However, when the Korean Journal of Medical Physics was excluded, centralization increased from 2.32% for the period from 2001~2005 to 3.80% from 2006~2010. This suggested that the communication in the clinical research field of radiation oncology is decreasing. In a node centralization analysis, Seoul National University was found to be the highest at 7.9%. Seoul National University showed the highest indices in the Outdegree (6.50%) and Indegree (8.54%), in addition to Betweenness (14.94%) and Eigenvector (135.234%). The Key Player analysis indicated that Inha University had the highest index at 0.491, but when the Korean Journal of Medical Physics was excluded, Yonsei University had the highest Key Player index at 0.584. CONCLUSION: The degree centrality in the network of radiation oncology decreased in the most recent period as more institutions are participating in network. However, the Betweenness centrality is still increasing, suggesting that the communications among research groups (clique) in radiation oncology is warranted.
