1.The Effects of a Functional Game (Rejuvenescent Village) for Older Koreans' Cognitive Function, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, Depression, and Life Satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of a senior functional game (Rejuvenescent village) on cognitive function, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), depression, and life satisfaction in Korea. METHODS: An one-group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. Data were collected twice (at the beginning and the end) from 100 elderly adults in S city who played “Rejuvenescent village” 8 times (twice per week, one hour per session) for a month. Also they completed questionnaires on their cognitive function, IADL, depression, life satisfaction, and general characteristics. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 programs. RESULTS: The mean age was 70.06(±3.77) years, with a range of 65-80 years old. Among 100 subjects, 21% were male and 85% were young old. There were statistically significant differences in cognitive function (t=-3.32, p=.001), IADL (t=1.98, p=.049), and life satisfaction (t=-2.15, p=.034). Although there was no statistically significant difference in mean depression score (t=1.06, p=.292), categorized depression was statistically significant (χ²=62.97, p<.001). CONCLUSION: The findings in this study show that the serious game (Rejuvenescent village) was effective for older Koreans' cognitive function, IADL, depression, and life satisfaction. Thus, we need to consider senior functional games to get health benefits by making elderly adults active with enjoyment.

2.Immunosuppressive Effects of Tautomycetin on T Cells.

T cell activation is a critical event for initiation and regulation of immune responses and inhibitors of such signaling pathways are clinically useful for the treatment of patients received allogratt and autoimmune disease. In the course of screening soil microorganisms from the forest of Cheju island in Korea for new immunosuppressive agent, one of Streptomyces species (CK-95441) was found to produce a new immunosuppressant, tautomycetin which also had antifungal activity. Tautomycetin showed the inhibition of T cell proliferation in murine mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) and T cell activation induced by concanavalin A. Tautomycetin also blocked the induction of IL-2 gene expression which was examined in Jurkat TAg cell line in which multiple NFAT-binding sites and minimal IL-2 promoter drive the production of B-galactosidase. Also, the level of inhibition in activation-induced IL-2 receptor expression by tautomycetin was greater than those by cyclosporin A measured by flow cytometry. But, Fas ligand-induced apoptosis in Jurkat cells was unaffected by tautomycetin which was measured by DNA fragmentation assay. These results suggested that tautomycetin will be able to be used as a potent immunosuppressive drug following organ transplantation.
3.Intraocular Pressure with the Mackay-Marg Electronic Applanation Tonometer in Normal Eyes.

The measurement of the intraocular pressure were made with the Mackay-Marg electronic applanation tonometer, as compared with standard Goldmann tonometer and Schiotz tonometer in Korean 114 normal eyes. The results were as follows: 1. The mean intraocular pressure of 114 normal eyes was 16.61 +/- 3. 77 mmHg with a Mackay-Marg tonometer. 2. There was significant differances between the Mackay-Marg tonometer and Goldmann tonometric values(p<0.005). The corelation coefficent(r) was 0.975, the linear regression was Y = 1.37 + 1.06X. 3. The standard deviation for Mackay-Marg tonometer was greater thandoldmann readings, and it was about 1.37 mmHg higher than Goldmann's. 4. There was significant differances between the Mackay-Marg tonometer and Schiotz tonometric values(p<0.005). The corelation coefficent(r) was 0.938, the linear regression was Y = 0.82X - 0.07.

5.A Case of Annular Pustular Psoriasis.

Annular pustular psoriasis is a rare variant of the generalized pustular psoriasis characterized by annular lesions with rapidly evolving pustules, associated mild toxicity, and rapid response to therapy. We present a case of annular pustular psoriasis in a 17-year-old male, in whom no previous history of psoriasis was found. The skin lesions were characterized clinically by annular to gyrate erythematous lesions with pinpoint pustules near the periphery on both shoulders, upper arms, and back areas. The histology showed large intraepidermal spongiform pustules. Most of the skin lesions disappeared within 1 week with topical corticosteroid cream.
6.A study on the lingual morthology of the dental arch in normal occlusion.

This study was designed to get the knowledge of the structual characteristics of the lingual dental arch shaper of Koreans. The subjects consisted of 107 nirmal occulsions. The lingual structure which was divided into two groups, anterior and posterior part, was measured and analyzed. 22 pairs of the 107 samples were usde to test the derived results. The findings of this study were as follows; 1. The mathmatical functions of the we curces which showed good fitting to the upper and lower anterior lingual arch were derived and drawed to the same acale using the computer graphics. 2. The results of the test showed a reasonable degree of accuracy to all of the 33 randm samples. 3. The average degrees of posterior flexions were obtained and could be used as a initial guide at the wire-bending.

8.Mechanical analysis on the multiloop edgewise arch wire.

This study was designed to survey the stress distributions and deflections which were derived from MEAW by the computer-aided three dimensional finite element analysis of teeth and surrounding bone composed of 2839 solid elements and 4621 nodes. MEAW model was also made using the 90 beam elements and the results were expressed by quantitative and visible ways. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. In case of vertical load on the MEAW there were extrusions of anterior teeth and upright effects of the posterior teeth. 2. Without applying the vertical elastics on the MEAW there were intrusions of anterior teeth, but relatively mild force was transmitted to the posterior teeth area. Torque forces were observed on the incisors and molars, and canine was intruded without torque. 3. The magnitudes of forces were different by the amounts of tip back bends of MEAW. 4. The displacements were in inverse proportion to the cross section areas of the wires according to the experiment using the 5 different size arch wires. 5. The difference of deflections between the MEAW and plain arch wire was not so big as the theoretical one but the deflections of MEAW were much more than the plain arch wire in every X, Y, Z direction.

9.Regulation of Estrogen Receptor mRNA in Rat Anterior Pituitary Gland.

The estrogen receptor (ER) is present in a wide variety of mammalian tissues and is required for the physiological responses of estrogen, including estrogen-induced tissue-specific changes in gene expression. But most of our knowledge on the regulation of ER mRNA levels comes from in vivo steroid replacement experiments or cancer cell lines that express the ER. Thus the present study was attempted to determine 1) the anterior pituitary ER mRNA levels during rat estrous cycle 2) if estradiol itself directly modulates the ER mRNA levels in cultured rat anterior pituitary using RT-PCR method. In rats with 4 day estrous cycle, the ER mRNA levels in anterior pituitary gland reached to maximum at proestrus 11:00h just before serum estradiol concentration showed the highest. From then, the ER mRNA levels gradually declined during the rest of the proestrus. On the other hands, in cultured rat anterior pituitary cells, the ER mRNA levels were significantly decreased by the treatment of estradiol. These results indicate that the surge of estradiol was proceeded by the increase in pituitary ER mRNA levels during the proestrus and in cultured anterior pituitary cells, estrogen might be involved in the down-regulation of the ER mRNA levels.
