Korean Journal of Nosocomial Infection Control 2012;17(2):61-69
BACKGROUND: This study aims to examine the knowledge of nursing and allied health-college students on cough etiquette and their actual compliance to it. METHODS: For data collection, a structured questionnaire was created and handed out to students from 3 colleges from November 9 to November 18, 2011. The questionnaires were distributed to 300 students, and responses from 253 students were used for data analysis. RESULTS: In total, 54.85% students provided correct answers to questions regarding their knowledge on cough etiquette. The compliance score was 34.39 (compliance rate: 61.41%). There was a positive association between knowledge of proper cough etiquette and compliance with those procedures. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that college student's knowledge of cough etiquette is low, and subsequently that their compliance with the proper procedures of cough etiquette was low. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program to build knowledge of proper cough etiquette amongst these students.

Korean Journal of Nuclear Medicine 2001;35(1):33-42
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of scatter correction on the assessment of myocardial perfusion and left ventricular function by gated Tc-99m myocardial SPECT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects were 11 normal volunteers, 20 patients with non-cardiac chest pain and 13 patients with coronary artery diseases. We classified above 3 groups into normal and diseased groups. Scatter correction was done using dual-energy-window scatter correction method (DEW-SC). We compared acquired counts, image contrast, corrected maximum relative counts, indices of left ventricular function, extent and severity of perfusion defects calculated by 'CEqual program' between scatter non-corrected and corrected images. RESULTS: Scatter corrected studies was lower in counts by 18+/-3% than uncorrected studies, but image contrast were improved in all cases. Scatter correction using DEW-SC took 3 minutes to complete, and 512 kB memory to store. There were no significant differences among indices of left ventricular function between scatter non-corrected and corrected images. Although extents of perfusion defects were not significantly different, severity was severer in scatter corrected images. CONCLUSION: Scatter correction using DEW-SC is simple to do, and improves image contrast without changing other indices of myocardial perfusion and function.

We report a case of acrodermatitis enteropathica-like syndrome after long-term parenteral nutrition in a 19-year-old female with a choriocarcinoma metastasized to the lung. Skin lesions consisted of vesicopustular periorificial eruptions, psoriasiform plaques on the knees and elbows, eczamatoid patches on the acral regions, paronychia, alopecia, and of poor wound healing, Severe diarrhea was accompanied. Zinc sulphate was administered 200mg three times daily for one week with improvement of the skin eruptions and diarrhea. The patient, however, died on the 7th day of zinc therapy with the poor general condition.

Malignant histiocytosis is a rare, usually fatal malignant neoplasm. We present a case of a 62 year-old female with malignant histiocytosis involving the skin, lymph nodes and bone marrow. The patient achieved a complete remission for 1 year after the completion of COPP chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide, vincristine, procarbazine and prednisone). We propose that COPP chemotherapy is a valuable therapeutic regimen for malignant histiocytosis.

Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine 1994;11(1):160-166
Mid-arm circumference and mid-arm circumference/head circumference ratio(MAC/HC) were measured in 207 AGA(appropriate for gestational age) infants delivered at 26 to 42 weeks of gestation from January 1990 to December 1993 in Yeungnam University Hospital, Taegu, Korea. There were linear relationships between MACs and MAC/HC ratios and gestational age(MAC : y=03181x -2.2069, r=0.81, p<0.001 ; MAC/HC ratio : y=0.049x+0.1128, r=0.62, ; < 0.001). Using standard curves of MAC and MAC/HC ratio according to the gestational age, measurement of MAC or MAC/HC ratio can be a noninvasive, simple method to evaluate the intrauterine growth of newborn infants and the nutritional status of growing premature infants.

Journal of the Korean Pediatric Society 2002;45(1):55-63
PURPOSE: A nationwide survey was conducted to investigate the most common causative organisms in neonatal sepsis in Korea. METHODS: By reviewing medical records of newborn infants who were confirmed as neonatal sepsis by isolating organisms from blood culture during a one year study period from January to December in 1997, data for causative organisms, risk factors, accompanying focal infections and combinations of antibiotics were collected. RESULTS: 112,351 neonates were born at 55 hospitals in 1997 and 30,767 neonates were admitted to the neonatal units. During this period, 1,175 episodes of neonatal sepsis were recorded in 1,116 neonates. The male to female ratio was 1.17:1. 424 cases(36%) were born prematurely. The main pathogens of early-onset sepsis were coagulase negative Staphylococcus(CONS, 19.3%), S. aureus (16.1%), S. epidermidis(16.1%) and Gram negative bacilli(19.2%) including Pseudomonas(5.9%), Klebsiella(3.9%), E. coli(3.9%), Enterobacter spp(3.5%), Acinetobacter(2.0%). Only six cases of group B beta-hemolytic Streptococcus were isolated. Common obstetric factors were premature rupture of membranes(17.3%), maternal leukocytosis(14.6%), fetal tachycardia(10.2%), chorioamnionitis(3.1%) and maternal fever(3.1%). The main pathogens of late-onset sepsis were S. aureus (20.3%), S. epidermidis(18.9%) and CONS(13.7%). Frequent focal infections accompanying sepsis were arthritis(12.8%), meningitis(7.0%), pneumonia(5.4%) and urinary tract infection(3.1%). The most common combination of antibiotics used in early and late neonatal sepsis was ampicillin and gentamicin. When a nosocomial infection was suspected, a combination of vancomycin and cefotaxime was used most frequently. CONCLUSION: S. aureus and S. epidermidis were the most common pathogens in the neonatal sepsis.

Journal of the Korean Surgical Society 1999;56(3):396-402
BACKGROUND: Residual and recurrent bile duct stones after biliary surgery cause many difficult problems. and reoperation on biliary tract has limitation due to its high morbidity and mortality. In recent years, various non-operative modalities for management in residual and recurrent stone have been developed. METHODS: We analyzed 69 cases of residual and recurrent bile duct stones which were managed with non-operative modalities at the Department of surgery, Dae Dong Hospital from Jan. 1994 to Dec. 1997, and evaluated the efficacy of these modalities. RESULTS: Female exceeded male with a ratio 1.76:1. and the peak incidence of age group was 6th decade. The most common diagnostic procedure was T-tube cholangiography (53.6%). Interval between previous operation and second procedure for residual or recurrent stones was within 6 months in most cases (82%). Cholecystectomy with T-tube choledochostomy was performed most frequently in previous operation. Residual and recurrent stones were found only at common bile duct in 34 cases (49.3%) most commonly. Common bile duct stones were managed most frequently with endoscopic sphincterotomy (39.5%), but the complete removal rate was heighest in choledochoscopic stone removal (100%). Complete removal rate of intrahepatic duct stone was heighest with interventional radiologic stone removal as well as choledochoscopic stone removal (43.6%), but average number of session was smaller in choledochoscopic stone removal (2.5) than interventional radiologic stone removal (3.5). Associated complication with non-operative management modalities were very low, except three cases of hepaticocutaneous jejunostomy. The latter required reoperation due to continuous bile fistula in two cases, and long jejunal loop in one case. CONCLUSIONS: Choledochoscopic stone removal is most effective method in the management of residual and recurrent bile duct stones.
