Korean Journal of Nosocomial Infection Control 2012;17(2):61-69
BACKGROUND: This study aims to examine the knowledge of nursing and allied health-college students on cough etiquette and their actual compliance to it. METHODS: For data collection, a structured questionnaire was created and handed out to students from 3 colleges from November 9 to November 18, 2011. The questionnaires were distributed to 300 students, and responses from 253 students were used for data analysis. RESULTS: In total, 54.85% students provided correct answers to questions regarding their knowledge on cough etiquette. The compliance score was 34.39 (compliance rate: 61.41%). There was a positive association between knowledge of proper cough etiquette and compliance with those procedures. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that college student's knowledge of cough etiquette is low, and subsequently that their compliance with the proper procedures of cough etiquette was low. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program to build knowledge of proper cough etiquette amongst these students.

OBJECTIVE: We previously described that Diva is highly expressed in matured metaphase II (MII) oocytes compared to immature germinal vesicle (GV) oocytes in mouse.1 We report here that the expression of Diva transcript as well as protein is oocyte-specific. To elucidate its physiological role in oocyte, the binding partner(s) of Diva has been identified by using immunoprecipitation (IP) followed by Mass Spectrometry. METHODS: NIH/3T3 cells were transiently transfected for 24 h with either empty vector for control or FLAG-tagged mouse Diva construct, and IP was performed with anti-FLAG antibody. The immuno-isolated complexes were resolved by SDS-PAGE on a 12% gel followed by Coomassie Blue staining. For in-gel digestion, 15 bands of interest were excised manually and digested with trypsin. All mass spectra were acquired at a positive reflector mode by a 4700 Proteomics Analyzer (Applied Biosystems, Framingham, MA). Proteins were identified by searching the NCBI nonredundant database using MASCOT Peptide Mass Fingerprint software (Matrixscience, London). RESULTS: Diva-associated complexes were formed in FLAG-tagged mouse Diva-overexpressed NIH/3T3 cells via IP using anti-FLAG-conjugated beads. Among the excised 15 bands, actin and actin-binding proteins such as tropomyosin, tropomodulin 3, and alpha-actinin were identified. Binding between Diva and actin or tropomyosin was confirmed by IP followed by Western blot analysis. Both bindings were also detected endogenously in mouse ovaries, indicating that Diva works with actin and tropomyosin. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report that immuno-isolated Diva-associated complexes are related to actin filament of the cytoskeletal system. When we consider the association of Diva with actin and tropomyosin, oocyte-specific Diva may play a role in modulating the cytoskeletal system during oocyte maturation.

Korean Journal of Obesity 2015;24(4):190-196
The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is steadily increasing in conjunction with increases in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and physical inactivity. NAFLD encompasses a spectrum of conditions associated with lipid deposition in hepatocytes, ranging from simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and to advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis. A large proportion of patients with NAFLD have co-existing metabolic syndrome, which is also a major risk factor of cardiovascular disease. There is an urgency to recognize that NAFLD poses an additional risk for cardiovascular disease and should involve early aggressive risk factor modification. A lifestyle modification of diet and physical activity targeting substantial weight loss is considered as the first-line defense system against NAFLD. In this review, the roles of physical activity are discussed as an effective and safe means to combat NAFLD and its metabolic complications.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2008;49(10):1658-1664
PURPOSE: We investigated the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of leisure activity- and sports-related ocular trauma for application to its treatment and prevention. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on 121 patients who visited Gachon University Gil Medical Center from January 2006 to December 2007 because of leasure activity- and sports-related ocular trauma. The incidence of ocular injuries, sex and age, monthly and seasonal distribution, causes, diagnosis, and visual acuity were reviewed. RESULTS: Among the 1592 patients of ocular trauma, 121 patients (7.6%) were related to leasure activity- and sports. The incidence was higher in males (81.8%; 4.5-fold) than in females. The mean age of patients was 23.7+/-7.1 years. Ocular injuries occurred least in winter (19.8%) and occurred more during the week than on weekends (1.6-fold). The most common cause was soccer (39.7%), more specifically being hit with the soccer ball (47.1%). The initial LogMAR visual acuity was worse in the females and in the patients older than 30 years. Traumatic hyphema (19.7%) was the most common cause of visual disturbance, and corneal erosion (11.3%) occurred frequently. CONCLUSIONS: Leasure activity- and sports-related ocular trauma is becoming an increasingly significant cause of ocular morbidity, and trends relating to characteristics such as sex and age were found. These outcomes can be put to practical use in the prevention and treatment of sports-relatedocular injuries.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1995;29(3):296-302
Polymorphic reticulosis(PMR) is a unique clinicopathological entity of unknown etiology, which commonly present as an aggressive, necrotizing lesion of the upper respiratory tract. It is a separate nosologic entity from Wegener's granulomatosis and idiopathic mildine destructive disease. The origin of the cells composing polymorphic reticulosis has been controversial. We reviewed 15 cases of polymorphic reticulosis with respect to clinical and histologic bases, and immunohistochemical studies were done using UCHLI (CD45RO), as a T cell marker, CD-20 as a B cell marker and alpha- I -antichymotrypsin as a histiocytic marker. Almost all cases showed characteristic histologic and immunohistochemical features similar to those of peripheral T cell lymphoma. Thus, this study indidcated that polymorphic reticulosis is a type of malignant lymphoma of T cell lineage.

Journal of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons 1998;25(5):928-933
The most important basic requirements for successful skin grafting are the accurate approximation of the edge of the skin graft to that of the wound and the application of even pressure to the graft by a carefully designed dressing. Pressure dressing is indicated for the protection of the graft and the prevention of shearing between the graft and its bed. One of the most widely used methods of pressure dressing is tie-over dressing. The traditional technique is based on the application of long silk sutures along the margin of the graft that are tied over bolus of antibiotics oint-impregnated nonadherent fluffed gauze. With the traditional tie-over dressing, it is impossible to inspect the graft bed for possible hematoma and seroma during the application of dressing. So we adopted another modification of the previously described tie-over dressing methods. From January 1997 to July 1997, we had performed 27 skin graft surgeries and 8 subdermal shavings in 35 patients with our new method of tie-over dressing. We can apply even pressure to the grafts by twisting the long silk sutures instead of typing. In comparison with the plethora of devices and techniques described previously in tie-over dressing construction, our technique offers simplicity and reliable fixation of the graft to the bed and allows further adjustment of the dressing by individual tightening of the threads. Other particularly attractive features are the ability to inspect the graft at any time with little difficulty and the reapplicability of tie-over dressing with the remaining long threads if needed.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1994;32(6):1035-1045
BACKGROUND: In the skin, the major stimulus for cutaneous pigmentation is ultraviolet radiation. The most important physiologic role of melanin is protection against harmful UV radiation to skin. It is known there are some differences in melanization between a single and multiple exposures of UVB, in vivo. Little if known about the functions of the melanocyte alone in cutaneous pigmentation after ultraviolet exposure, because of the complexity of interactions in the whole epidermis. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of multiple exposures at various dosages of UVB, and to compare the effect of UVB in multiple divided exposures with a single exposure at the same total dosage of UVB on proliferation and melanization in cultured human melanocyte. METHODS: Melanocytes were cultured by modified TIC medium. The melanoctes were exposed daily for three consecutive days to UVB at 2, 4, 8 and 16 mJ/cm2and a single exposure at 24 mJ/cm2. The morphologic changes were examined by phase contrast microscopy. The melanocytes were counted by hemocytometer and melanin contents were assayed by spectrophotometer. RESULTS: 1. The effects of multiple UVB exposures: 1) The morphologic changes were as follows: With three time exposures at a dosage of 8 mJ/cm2, themelanocytes enlarged in size, and elongated their dendrites slightly; with three time exposures at a dosage of 16 mJ/cm2, enlargement in sized and elongation of dendrited were more significant. 2) With three time exposures at dosages of 2 nd 4 mJ/cm2, the proliferation of melanocytes was stiumlated significantly(p<0.05). However, with three time exposures at dosages of 8 and 16 mJ/cm2the proliferation was inhibited(p<0.05). 3) With three time exposures at dosages of 2 and 4 mJ/cm2, the melanin contents were decreased. However, with three tiem exposures at a dosage of 16 mJ/cm2, the melanin contents were highly increased(p<0.01). 2. The comparison between multiple divided exposures and a single exposure at the same toal dosage of UVB: 1) There were no morphologic differences of dendrities between with three time exposures at a dosage of 8 mJ/cm2 and with a single exposure at a dosage of 24 mJ/cm2. However enlarged melanocytes were more numerous with a single exposure. 2) The proliferation of melanocytes was more inhibited with a single exposure than with multiple divided exposures(p<0.05). 3) The melanin contents were more increased with a single exposure than with multiple divided exposures(p<0.05). CONCLUSION: With multiple exposures at lower dosages of UVB, the proliferation of melanocytes was stimulated, and melanization was decreased. However, with multiple exposures at higher dosages of UVB, the proliferation was inhibited, and melanization was increased. At the same total dosage of UVB, the proliferation was more inhibited, and the melanization was more increased with a single exposure than with multiple divided exposures.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1999;33(2):108-114
We reviewed eight solitary fibrous tumors occurring at sites other than pleura (three orbit, two retroperitoneum, one each hard palate, thyroid, and tongue) which shared the histologic and immunohistochemical features of solitary fibrous tumors of pleura. Six patients were women, and two were men, aged from 26 to 74 years. The tumors ranging from 1.5 to 19 cm in diameter presented as well-circumscribed, unencapsulated, soft to rubbery tissue masses. Histologically they were characterized by a proliferation of spindle or ovoid cells intervened by a dense bundles of collagen. A variety of growth patterns was identified but the so-called patternless pattern was the predominant one. One tumor exhibited highly cellular sarcomatous areas with extensive necrosis, which was diagnosed as malignant solitary fibrous tumor. Immunohistochemical studies showed that all of the tumors were strongly positive for both CD34 and vimentin, but negative for cytokeratin, S-100 protein, EMA, and desmin. One case examined ultrastructurally showed features of fibroblast. All but one showed no evidence of recurrence or metastasis over follow-up period of 14 to 32 months. We conclude that extrapleural solitary fibrous tumors represent a distinct mesenchymal tumor with variable histologic features and should be differentiated from other spindle cell mesenchymal tumors.
