1.A Case of Phthiriasis Palpebrarum Treated with Tea Tree Oil in a Child.

PURPOSE: The authors of the present study report a case of phthiriasis palpebrarum treated with petrolatum ointment and tea tree oil in a 12-month-old boy. CASE SUMMARY: A bluish-gray macule and blood clots were found on the central portion of the upper eyelid of a boy who had rubbed his eyelid vigorously 1 week prior. Several 0.5 mm sized brownish-gray nits and 1.6 mm sized lice on the eyelashes were visible and was diagnosed with phthiriasis palpebrarum after light microscopic examination. The nits and lice were gently removed mechanically with the help of a white petrolatum ointment (Vaseline) and the eyelashes were cleaned with 50% tea tree oil. Nits and lice were successfully eradicated without recurrence 10 days after daily treatment with petrolatum ointment and 10% tea tree oil eyelash cleansing.

2.The Effect of Diphenylcyclopropenone Immunotherapy on Molluscum Contagiosum.

BACKGROUND: Contact immunotherapy using diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP) has been used in the treatment of alopecia and warts. DPCP seemed to be a promising agent for viral disease including molluscum contagiosum (MCI). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of DPCP immunotherapy on MC in children. METHODS: Twenty three patients with multiple lesion of MC were treated with DPCP immunotherapy. RESULTS: Twelve patients (52.2%) showed cure, and eleven patients (47.8%) showed treatment failure. No severe side effects were seen. CONCLUSION: DPCP immunotherapy may be an effective treatment in children with MC without serious side effects.

3.Oncogenic osteomalacia.

An unusual and rare presentation of osteomalacia results from the paracrine effect of a localized bone or soft tissue neoplasm. In this syndrome, known as tumor induced osteomalacia or oncogenic osteomalacia, a neoplasm synthesizes and secretes a circulating compound, known as phosphatonin, which acts on the kidney leading to phosphate wasting. Oncogenic osteomalacia can be caused by a wide variety of neoplasm, although they are usually primary soft tissue or bone tumors. Most commonly the causative neoplasm is a benign or low-grade malignant vascular or fibrous tissue tumor. Complete removal of the offending neoplasm completely reverses the osteomalacia. If successful, the osteomalacia resolves. However, incomplete removal of the neoplasm necessitates treatment with phosphate and Vitamin D3 to ameliorate the skeletal disease.

5.A Case of Solar Urticaria.

Solar urticaria is a fairly uncommon but Well recognized clinical entity characterized by erythema and wheal with itching immediately following exposure to sunlight or artifical radiation. A 33-year-old female had a six-year duration of urticaria, tightness of chest and dizziness that appeared within 15 minutes of exposure to sunlight. The action spectrum of this patient was between 320 and 400nm and the passive and reverse passive transfer test were negative. Solar urticaria of our patient appeared to belong to type g in the classification of Harber et al(1963). The patient was treated with antihistamines and repeated exposure to sunlight for inducing tolerance. After 3 months of the treatment, the symptoms did not appear even after 3 hours of exposure to sunlight.

6.A Case of Scabies Combined with Superficial Dermatophytosis: affrevated by topical fluorinated steroid.

A case of scabies combined with superficial dermatophytosis which was aggravated by application of topical fluorinated steroid for 6 months is presented. One year ago a 60-year-old male began to have pruritic erythematous papules on the lower abdomen which spread slowly to the inguinal and buttock area. He had had onychomycosis for six years and for the last 6 months he had applied a. fluorinated steroid. preparation. After application of steroid, the aggravated skin lesions spread rapidly over the whole body. A KOH mount showed sarcoptes scabiei and fungus. A count of itch mites from scales brushed off and collected from. the overall surface of the patients body showed 263 adults, 169 Iarvae and 534 eggs. T. rubrum from a culture of scales from the trunk and nails was confirmed. On admission FBS and oral GTT test revealed diabetic curve, however it could not be determined whether the diabetes mellitus was primary or secondary to the use of topical steroid application. The patient has been treated with crotamiton cream and antifungal agent with remarkably effective results.

7.Correlation Between the Frequency of Apoptotic Bodies and Gleason Scores in Prostatic Cancer.

Apoptosis (or programmed cell death) is defined by morphologic changes induced by a spectrum of physical and chemical agents. resulting in non-pathologic cell loss, which is relevant to a range of biological processes, including differentiation, development, maturation, and injury of cells as well as immunologic function. In this study, we examined the frequency of apoptotic bodies and mitoses (apoptotic and mitotic indices) in the tissue samples of 35 patients of prostatic carcinoma, which were grouped according to the Gleason scores, and 5 cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia. The indices were determined as the numbers of apoptotic and mitotic bodies per 100 tumor cells in hematoxylin eosin stained section. The apoptotic bodies were confirmed by the in situ nick end labelling method. The apoptotic and mitotic indices were observed more frequently in prostatic carcinoma than the benign hyperplastic prostatic tissues with a positive correlation between the frequency of apoptotic bodies and Gleason scores in prostatic cancer. In conclusion, an increased programmed cell death was correlated with the increasing malignant potential (higher Gleason scores) in prostatic cancer.

8.Studies of Pilocarpine Uptake and Release in Vitro Using Soft Contact Lens.

The times of uptake and release of pilocarpine solution by soft contact lenses were studied with spectrophometer in vitro. The uptake time was about 30 minutes and the releasing time was stationary after 30 minutes. The lower concentriction of pilocarpine solution was generally rapid uptake and release than higher.

9.So-called sclerosing hemangioma of the lung: two cases report with ultrastructural study.

Sclerosing hemangiomas of the lung are benign neoplasms of uncertain histogenesis. We analysed two cases of sclerosing hemangiomas of the lung with histochemistry and electron microscopy. They had a variegated histologic appearance characterized by an admixture of solid, hemorrhagic, papillary and sclerotic lesions. Characteristic uniform round cells, unique to this tumor, were found within the stroma in all lesions. In the electron microscopic examination, we found Weibel-Palade bodies like small bodies in the tumor cells. We suspect hypothesis originating in the endothelial cell can not be completely excluded yet. Sclerosing hemangioma is a distinct clinicopathologic entity and should be distinguished from other benign neoplasms or inflammatory lesions of the lung.

10.A finite element analysis of the stress distribution and displacement of an in vitro human mandible to the orthopedic force.

This study attempted to analyze the distribution of stress, to examine the bending effect in the mandible according to the pulling directions and determine on which pulling directions are adequate when an orthopedic force was applied to the mandible. An orthopedic force, 500gm, was applied to the gnathion, one point of the chin area, in three directions. The three directions were; high pull, from gnathion to the center of condyle head, and vertical pull, from gnathion to a parallel line with the posterior border of the ramus, and medium pull, from the gnathion to a parallel line with the lower border of mandible. The distribution of principal stress, bending moment and amount of displacement within the mandible was analyzed by a 3-dimensional finite element method and that of the various portions of mandible were computed and compared according to the pulling directions. The results were as follows: 1. The bending moment of each part of a mandible has been found to be markedly larger in case of vertical pull than in case of either high pull or medium pull. In vertical pull the bending moment turned out to largest at the condyle head and neck portion, the gonial angle portion, the coronoid portion and the ascending ramus portion, respectively, while comparatively large at the cuspid and bicuspid portion and the first molar portion. In case of high pull it was largest at the gonial angle portion and becoming smaller at the coronoid portion, the ascending ramus portion, the condyle head and neck portion, and the cuspid and bicuspid portion, in that order. In case of medium pull, however, the bending moment was largest at the condyle head and neck portion, becoming smaller at the first molar portion, the ascending ramus portion, the coronoid portion, the cuspid and bicuspid portion, and gonial angle portion, in that order. 2. As for the bending effect it was calculated to be mostly oriented downward at the mandibular body and backward at the mandibular ramusin both high pull and vertical pull. In case of medium pull it was oriented upward at the mandibular body and forward at the mandibular ramus. 3. The bending effect also turned out to be mostly oriented outward in case of high pull and medium pull, and inward in vertical pull. 4. At the mandibular body and ramus, the bending effect in the upward-downward direction and that in the forward-backward direction were found to be larger than in the inward-outward direction. 5. If and when we expect any correcting effect on the mandibular protrusion by means of the chin cup appliance, we can say sure as conclusion that high pull and vertical pull are more effective than medium pull.
