The purpose of this study is to find out what changes occur in the corneal curatures before and after the operation for pterygium and the relationships between the histopathologic findings and the various factors concerned with pterygium. The results are as follows: 1. The degree of corneal invasion of the pterygium head is closely related to the difference between the horizontal and vertical corneal curvatures before operation. 2. The difference between the horizontal and vertical corneal curvatures decre ase after operation. 3. The changes in horizontal curvatures are remarkable in 3 weeks after surgery with a mean change of +0.41 D. 4. In the histopathologic findings, the duration of pterygium and the increased amount of collagen fiber are significantly related(p<0.01). 5. There is no relationship between the histopathologic findings and the changee in corneal curvatures analysed by the SPSS program (p>0.05).

Abstract: This study examined the prevalence of adherence factors, toxin genes, antimicrobial resistance phenotypes, and resistance genes in Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolated from piglets with diarrhea before and after the ban on antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) in Korea from 2007 to 2018. In this period, pathogenic 474 E. coli isolates were obtained from diarrheic piglets. The virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance genes were assayed using a polymerase chain reaction, and the susceptibility to antibiotics was tested according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. After the ban on AGPs, the frequency of F4 (12.5% to 32.7%) increased significantly, and LT (31.9% to 20.3%) and EAST-I (46.5% to 35.2%) decreased significantly. In addition, the resistance to streptomycin (45.8% to 67.9%), cephalothin (34.0% to 59.4%), and cefazlin (10.4% to 28.8%) increased significantly. Colistin resistance plasmid-mediated genes, mcr-1 and mcr-3, were detected after the ban on AGPs. The results of this study can provide useful data for analyzing the impact of the ban on AGPs on the virulence profiles and antimicrobial resistance of E. coli isolated from piglets with diarrhea in Korea.

Osteogenic sarcoma is a malignant primary tumor of bone composed of a malignant connective tissue stroma with evidence of malignant osteoid, bone and/or cartilage formation. A 23 year old man was admitted to dental department of Yeungnam University hospital with chief complaint of swelling and pain on alveolar ridge of lower right molar region. It was certain of osteogenic sarcoma through clinical and radiographic features and biopsy. Surgical resection of the lesion was performed by partial mandibulectomy and resin plate insertion. By follow up check of the patient, we made good result of functional reconstruction without any sign of recurrence of the lesion.

To diagnose colibacillosis, detection of O-serogroups and virulence genes has been recommended worldwide. The prevalence of virulence factors can fluctuate over time. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of O-serogroups, virulence genes, and F18 subtypes among pathogenic Escherichia coli isolated from weaned piglets with diarrhea in Korea. Between 2008 and 2016, 362 E. coli were isolated from weaned piglets with diarrhea. Hemolysis was determined in blood agar, and O-serogroups were identified using the slide agglutination technique. The genes for the toxins and fimbriae were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Real-time PCR was conducted to discriminate between F18 subtypes. Although the most prevalent serogroup was O149 (11.3%) in the last 9 years, O139 (19.1%) became the most prevalent in recent years (2015–2016). The most predominant pathotype was enterotoxigenic E. coli (61.3%). The frequencies of Shiga-like toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) (23.4%), O139 (19.1%), Stx2e (35.1%), and F18ab (48.7%) increased over the most recent years. Although enterotoxigenic E. coli was the most predominant pathotype, the frequencies of O139, Stx2e, STEC, and F18ab have increased in recent years. These results demonstrate that there have been temporal changes in the predominant O-serogroups and virulence genes over the last decade in Korea. These findings can be practicable for use in epidemiology and control measures for enteric colibacillosis in Korean piggeries.

Peliosis hepatis is a rare condition that can cause hepatic hemorrhage, rupture, and ultimately liver failure. Several authors have reported that peliosis hepatis develops in association with chronic wasting disease or prolonged use of anabolic steroids or oral contraceptives. In this report we describe a case in which discontinuation of steroid therapy improved the condition of a patient with peliosis hepatis. Our patient was a 64-year-old woman with a history of long-term steroid treatment for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura . Her symptoms included abdominal pain and weight loss; the only finding of a physical examination was hepatomegaly. We performed computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the liver and a liver biopsy. Based on these findings plus clinical observations, she was diagnosed with peliosis hepatis and her steroid treatment was terminated. The patient recovered completely 3 months after steroid discontinuation, and remained stable over the following 6 months.

OBJECTIVE: Although Bell's palsy is not common in pregnancy, it is more prevalent among pregnant women than among non-pregnant women. Since the exact clinical characteristics of this condition are not fully understood, we evaluated the epidemiology, pathophysiology, onset time, as well as the recovery rate according to treatment modality of Bell's palsy in pregnancy, and compared them to those of the non-pregnant population in this study. METHODS: Between March 1996 and February 2006, we identified 43 patients who suffered from Bell's palsy during pregnancy and postpartum with a minimum 6 month follow up at Kyung Hee University Hospital. We conducted retrospective medical records analysis and compared them to similary chosen Bell's palsy case in non pregnant women who were matched for age. RESULTS: The median gestational age at the onset of Bell's palsy was 32 weeks. Among the 43 patients who had been diagnosed with Bell's palsy in pregnancy, 81.4% (35 of 43) showed a satisfactory outcome. Among the 36 patients with complete palsy, 77.8% (28 of 36) showed a satisfactory recovery. Recovery rate according to treatment modality in pregnant patients with Bell's palsy were 28/35 (80.0%) in the acupuncture group, 3/3 (100%) in the steroid therapy group, and 4/5 (80.0%) in the combined acupuncture and steroid therapy group, respectively. CONCLUSION: We did not detect any difference in clinical characteristics of Bell's palsy in the pregnant group compared with the non-pregnant group. Further study will be needed to select the method of treatment for Bell's palsy in pregnant women.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) professional periodontal care program model for patients with hypertension and diabetes. METHODS: This descriptive case study included 151 participants of the professional periodontal care program. The CBPR-based professional periodontal care program consists of 5-steps: ‘Issue identification and prioritization’ (Step 1), ‘Strategy development’ (Step 2), ‘Entry into community’ (Step 3), ‘Implementation’ (Step 4), and ‘Transition’ (Step 5). Quantitative data were analyzed using frequency analysis, and descriptive data with PASW 23.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). The results of the Focus group interview (FGI) were classified as ‘general opinions regarding the program planning and operation receptiveness’, ‘sustainability’, ‘potential spread of the program’, and ‘improvement of program’. The interviews were qualitative research involving seven people. RESULTS: 1. Participants increased their interest in health and oral health by managing their hypertension, diabetes, and periodontal disease using community resources. Through this, healthy practices and improved awareness helped to prevent complications and manage periodontal diseases. 2. Community organizations actively cooperated, resulting in positive changes in oral health practices (increased registration of patients in education centers for hypertension and diabetes, and increased number of patients visiting the local dental clinic). In the future, it was positive to participate in the program continuously. CONCLUSIONS: The most important step is ‘Entry into community’, which has led to active participation and cooperation of community organizations and participants. Therefore, community organizations and strategy development should be discussed, and the role of community leaders should be emphasized to build cooperative relationships. In addition, participation in and collaboration with health-based projects should be achieved through a search of various community organizations.

OBJECTIVES: As public concern on possible harmful effects of mobile phone in children has been raised, information of epidemiological characteristics of mobile phone use in children and adolescents will be essential for public health policy. METHODS: Using three databases (n=21,693) collected from 2008 to 2011, we examined characteristics of mobile phone ownership and use, and socioeconomic positions (SEP) in Korean children and adolescents. RESULTS: The ownership rate and the amount of mobile phone use were higher in females than males, in higher school grades than lower grades, and at 2011 than 2008. The average age of first mobile phone ownership was shown to decrease from 12.5 years in currently high school students to 8.4 years in currently elementary school students at 2011. More than 90% of children in the 5th grade owned a mobile phone. More children owned a mobile phone in lower SEP communities than in higher SEP. Children with parents educated less than those with parents educated more were more likely to own and use mobile phone. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the epidemiological characteristics of mobile phone use, precautionary measures to prevent unnecessary exposure to mobile phones are needed in children and adolescents.

Breast cancer is a common malignancy in women and metastasizes to the liver, the lung, the brain, and the bone, but metastasis to the colon is rare. We describe a 58-year-old woman with colon metastasis of breast cancer. She was diagnosed with right colon cancer, and during investigation for colon cancer, we found a breast cancer. She received a palliative right hemicolectomy due to obstruction before chemotherapy. The histology of the tissue taken from the right colon was shown to be the same as that of the left breast mass. This is a case of colonic metastasis from breast cancer and we report this case with a review of literature.
