Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing 2002;9(3):388-398
PURPOSE: This research was designed as a pre-post experimental study with a nonequivalent control group to verify the effects of meridian exercise on health status, depression and self-esteem in institutionalized elderly people. METHOD: The research population included 38 participants, 65 years and over, who were assigned to an experimental group (18) or a control group (20). All of the participants were institutionalized in Seoul. Data collection was done from October, 2000 to May, 2001 and the experimental treatment for this study, meridian exercise, was done for a total 30 minutes per session for 12 sessions over two weeks. The exercise was developed by a professor of Oriental Medicine and the researchers involved in this study. The data were analyzed using the SPSS PC+ program. RESULT: There were no significant differences for general characteristics between the two groups. Physical health status, mental-mood health status, depression and self-esteem were low. Differences in the physical health status of the elderly people was higher in the experimental group (t=16.299, p=0.000). The effects of the meridian exercise on mental-mood health status, depression, and self-esteem were statistically significant (t=10.301, p=0.000; t=15.579, p=0.000; t=14.571, p=0.000). CONCLUSION: According to the results, meridian exercise should be used to improve health status, reduce depression and increase self-esteem, and so promote the quality of life for elderly people who must be institutionalized. A study to measure the physiological index in meridian exercise for elderly people is suggested as a method to set up a Korean nursing intervention to enable elderly people to manage their own health.

A human malignant lymphoid cell line(JeKo-1) was established from a Korean patient with retroperitoneal tumor presenting peripheral blood and bone marrow involvement by malignant lymphoid cells. This cell line was established from peripheral blood, and the cell line had the identical immunophenotypic features as malignant cells from the peripheral blood. The established cell line had features of a mature B-cell phenotype with no evidence for commitment to other lineages. The JeKo-1 grows in suspension with a doubling time of 33 hours. By light and electron microscopic examination, the established cells had a follicular center showing, a small, cleaved, lymphoid appearance, and had a large amount of cytoplasm containing few vacuoles and an irregular cytoplasmic membrane. Immunophenotypic analyses with monoclonal antibodies using flow cytometry showed a monoclonal IgM kappa and CD5- B-cell phenotype. The cells were non-reactive for T-cells and myeloid/monocyte antigens, and no evidence of Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen by polymerase chain reaction. DNA analysis showed a hypodiploid stemline with a DNA index of 0.83. The established cells were strongly reactive for bcl-2 and c-myc onco-protein, but lacked expression of multidrug resistance gene protein, p-glycoprotein by Western blot analysis. Karyotypic analysis of JeKo-1 showed 40-41 chromosomes. This cell line should be a valuable tool to study the dissemination of malignant lymphoma into the peripheral blood and bone marrow.

The authors analyzed statistically, 2,290 cases of anesthesia for emergency Cesarean section perfomed at Ewha Womans University Hospital from January 1978 to December 1982. The results are as follows: 1) The incidence of emergency Ceaarean section was 73.8% of total Cesarean sections. 2) The most common indication was CPD(41.4%). 3) The most common gestational age group was 38-42 weeks(85.2%). 4) In NPO time, general anesthesia was twice in more than 6 hours, but spinal anesthesia was twice in less than 6 hours. 5) General anesthesia was increaaed but spinal anesthesia was decreased during the five year period. 6) In estimated blood loss, less than 1,000 ml was 80.0%. 7) Neonates with poor Apgar score (0-3 point) were 5.9% which related to prolonged induction-delivery time and general anesthesia. 8) A drop in blood pressure developed within 5 minutes in 58.3% after spinal anesthesia.

Korean Journal of Anesthesiology 1970;3(1):113-117
The discovery of an ideal technique for sterilising contaminated respirators and other anesthesia equipment remains a major problems, The antimicrobial activities of a recently discovered disinfectant alktaline-glutaraldehyde(Cidex), studied in vitro against various species of bacteria and fungi. The antimicrobial activity tests were performed according to the modified Kolmer method. The testing organisms were cultured in broth media at 37 degrees C and 25 degrees C for 18 hours to 14 days, and the disinfectant was diluted with sterile distilled;water to 0.4% and 2.0%. One milliliter of cultured broth was transferred into disinfectant-containing media and after 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 60 minutes, one loopful of the mateials was removed from the media and inoculated into the broth media. All of the subcultures were incubated at 37 degrees C for 24 hours and fungal subcultures were incubated at 25 degrees C for 14 days. Results were obtained as follows: 1) Most of the bacteria were completely growth-inhibited by treatment with 0.4% active alkaline-glutaraldehyde solution for 2 minutes except a few strains such as St. aureus, B. subtilis and M. tuberculosis, which required from 16 to 20 min. 2) Mycobacterium tuberculosis was relatively resistant but it could be growth-inhibited by treatment with 2.0% solution for 2 minutes. 3) Growth inhibiting of fungi could be obtained by treatment with 2.0% solution for 5 to 10 minutes.

Korean Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 2008;51(8):910-914
Most clear cell tumors of the ovaries are carcinomas; benign and borderline clear cell tumors are uncommon. We describe here a 52-year-old postmenopausal woman with an ovarian clear cell cystadenofibroma that was misdiagnosed before surgery as a borderline malignant cystic mass of the ovary. The ovarian mass had cystic and solid components. Histological examination revealed widely spaced simple glands embedded in a dense fibrous stroma. The glands were lined with one to two layers of hobnail cells, flattened cells, or cells with abundant clear cytoplasm. The patient successfully underwent a left oophoro-salpingectomy.

A right-sided aortic arch (RAA) is a rare congenital anomaly, and Stanford type B dissection aneurysms involving this anomaly is also uncommon. Surgical approaches to dealing with an RAA are complicated by the unusual anatomical features of the condition. Here we report the case of a 47-year-old male who had a type B dissecting aneurysm involving an RAA with Kommerell's diverticulum. Graft replacement was successfully performed with an uneventful postoperative course.

Korean Journal of Anesthesiology 1994;27(11):1596-1600
Preoxygenation is a standard anesthetic technique for preventing hypoxemia during the in- duction of anesthesia. This is achieved by alveolar denitrogenation while ventilating the lungs with 100% oxygen. Until recently there was no satisfactory nitrogen monitoring device except mass spectrometry which is not generally available. We used a convinient and readily available measuring technique to evaluate the effectpreoxygenation. In 31 healthy volunteers breathing 100% oxygen, end-tidal oxygen concentration have been measured at 15 seconds interval from the start of preoxygenation. A circle system was flushed with 100% oxygen and flow rate of 8 liter per minute. The gas sampling line of the Capnomac II (Datex, Finland) was placed in nasal cavity. At 1, 2, 3 minutes, mean end-tidal oxygen concentration was 78.7%, 89.2%, 91.9 % respectively. End-tidal nitrogen concentration was approximately 16.1 %, 5.8%, 3.2%. We conclude end-tidal oxygen concentration is a good indirect measure of denitrogenation.
