Journal of the Korean Society for Microbiology 1999;34(2):201-209
Treponema strain PFB4G is a novel oral spirochete and one of the most frequently detected organisms in subgingival plaque samples from rapidly progressive periodontitis and adult periodontitis patients. In this study, a genomic library of Treponema strain PFB4G was constructed in lambdaZAP expression vector. One positive clone that carried a 2.6-kb fragment was identified by screening with chicken Ig Y (immunoglobulin yolk) antibody raised against whole bacterial sonicates. Nucleotide sequencing of the subclones revealed an open reading frame (ORF) lacking the 5'-end. This region was obtained by PCR amplification using a degenerative and a specific primer. A complete open reading frame of 1,770 bp was identified and the deduced polypeptide consisted of 590 amino acids with a molecular mass of 65 kDa. The polypeptide, designated as OmpTL, had a typical prokaryotic signal sequence (19 amino acids) with a potential cleavage site for signal peptidase I and showed a significant level of homology with the outer membrane proteins of other oral treponemes, especially with that of Treponema maltophilum. The isolation of the gene encoding an outer membrane protein may allow the study of their roles in future, possibly as adhesion, pore forming or induction of proinflammatory cytokine synthesis.

Korean Circulation Journal 1981;11(2):73-82
The electrocardiographic and echocardiographic analysis was made on 23 patients with atrial septal defect of ostium secundum type, who were confirmed by right heart catheterization under admission at hanyang University Hospital from january 1979 to July 1981. Following results were obtained: 1) In the 23 patients, 13 were male and 10 female. Their ages ranged from 6 to 45 years, mean age being 19.9 years. 2) In 18 patients(78.3%), the QRS axis was between +90degrees and +150degrees. No significant correlations could be demonstrated between QRS axis and some hemodynamic parameters(right ventricular systolic pressure, pulmonary artery mean pressure and pulmonic to systemic flow ratio), and also, between QRS axis and the size of right ventricular dimension index. 3) Right ventricular outflow tract hypertrophy, right ventricular hypertrophy and complete right bundle branch block pattern in Lead V3R or V1were observed in 95.7% of ostium secundum defect. No significant correlations could be found between types of QRS complexes and some hemodynamic parameters(right ventricular systolic pressure, pulmonary artery mean pressure and pulmonic to systemic flow ratio), and also, between types of QRS complex and the size of right ventricular dimension index. 4) The mean amplitude of S wave in precordial Lead V6was 7.6mm. There was a definite correlation between the amplitude of S wave in Lead V6and right ventricular systolic pressure. No significant correlations could be demonstrated betwen the amplitude of s wave in Lead V6and some hemodynamic parameters(pulmonary artery mean pressure and pulmonic to systemic flow ratio), and also, the size of right ventricular dimension index. 5) Right ventricular dimension index was increased in all cases but one. A significant correlation was found between the size of right ventricular dimension index and pulmonary artery mean pressure, whereas no significant correlation could be demonstrated between the size of right ventricular dimension index and pulmonic to systemic flow ratio. 6) 95.7% of 23 patients with ostium secudum defect showed paradoxical septal motion was proved not to be associated with other congenital heart disease by cardiac catheterization. The pulmonic to systemic flow ratio in groups of septal motion type A was significantly increased than that of normal septal motion group, whereas no significantl relation between types of septal motion and the size of right ventricular dimension index was observed.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1984;19(4):659-669
It appears that frequency of fractures of the aceta ulum is increasing with the number of automobiles on our roads and when they occur they seem to pose difficulties of management. Because, the anatomy of this region is complicated, making surgical approaches difficult. Second, the patients often have major associated injuries, making early operative treatment hazardous. Third, the fractures are often severly comminuted, leading many surgeons to beleave that operative reduction is impossible. Finally, and unfortunately, the fractures are often missed. The aim of treatment must be to restore the fractured acetabulum to its normal anatomy followed by early motion to promote healing and restore function. Undisplaced acetabular fractures have a good prosis with conservative treatment but patients with displaced fractures of the acetabulum not reduced by manipulation and traction should be considered candidates for open reduction. The author experienced 72 cases of acetabular fracture patients who were admitted to the department of Orthopaedic Surgery of Catholic Medical College and Center from January 1979 to August 1983. The results of 48 patients who were followed up over 6 months period were as follows; l. Among 72 cases(44 were male and 28 were female), the most common causes of acetabular fracture was pedestrian struck by car. 2. 56 were treated conservatively and 16 were treated surgically. The result were as follows; Excellent-15(31%), Good-23(48%), Fair-8(17%), Poor-2(4%). 3. 72 cases were classified by Letournel classification. The most common type was posterior wall fracture(14 cases), and second most was T-shaped fracture(13 cases). 4. If the grossly displaced fragments are present they should be reduced and fixed surgically if surgical approach can be done. 5. It is essential to understand the pathologic anatomy of the acetabulum in order to approach the acetabular fracture sefely and with maximum ease.

In the orthopedic Department of Jeonbug National University Hospital, twenty-five open tibial shaft fractures were reviewed and analyzed with osteomedullography and bone scanning with radioactive isotopes from June 1981 to October 1983. The results are as follows. 1. The cases of injury were mostly traffic accident(70.8%) and majority was found between second decade and third decade. Males were 11 times more frequent than females. 2. In the shape and location of fractures, comminuted fracture(60%) was most common, and fracture of middle one third(48%), lower one third(28%) were in order. 3. In the open tibial fractures, Grade I. of soft tissue injury was most frequent(64%). As inthe plate fixation was required, we should it placed atypically on the posterior surface of the tibia. 4. In the osteomedullography at 3 months after treatment, the rate of positive finding was 80 and intraosseous crossing vein(Kaski sign 1) was observed most frequently. 5. In the profile of the bone scanning with radioactive isotopes, the rate of single-peak uptake was 76% and twin-peak uptake was 24%. 6. In the negative Osteomedullogram and twin-peak uptake on the profile of the bone scanning, bone graft was necessary. 7. In the case of difficult diagnosis for union process of tibia fracture, osteomedullography and bone scanning with radioactive isotopes were considered useful method of early diagnosis.

Korean Circulation Journal 1985;15(4):595-604
The authors accessed the effects of heart rate and age to echocardiographic right ventricular systolic time intervals in 27 cases with normal pulmonary artery pressure and correlation of pulmonary hemodynamic parameters with echocardiographic right ventricular systolic time intervals in 76 cases with congenital and acquired valvular heart diseases. The results were as follows; 1) As heart rate increased there was a diminution of the length of right ventricular ejection time(RVET)(r=0.642), but no significant changes in the length of right ventricular pre-ejection period(RVPEP) and the ratio of RVPEP/RVET were found. 2) As age increased there was an increase in the ratio of RVPEP/RVET(r=0.46), but no significant changes in the length of RVPEP and RVEF were found. 3) In patients with the RVPEP/RVET of 0.3 or more this ratio can predict that pulmonary artery systolic pressure is >30mmHg(sensitivity : 83%, specificity : 96%, accuracy 88%), pulmonary artery mean pressure >20mmHg(sensitivity : 87%, specificity : 96%, accuracy 90%), and pulmonary artery diastolic pressure >15mmHg(sensitivity : 86%, specificity : 90%, accuracy : 88%). 4) In patients with the RVPEP/RVET of 0.4 or more this ratio can predict that pulmonary artery systolic pressure is >50 mmHg(sensitivity : 75%, specificity : 98%, accuracy : 92%), pulmonary artery mean pressure >40mmhg(sensitivity : 93%, specificity : 96%, accuracy : 96%), pulmonary artery diastolic pressure >25mmHg(sensitivity : 75%, specificity : 98%, accuracy : 92%), pulmonary vascular resistance >6 units(sensitivity : 70%, specificity : 96%, accuracy : 89%), and Rp/Rs >0.25(sensitivity : 86%, specificity : 95%, accuracy : 93%). In conclusion, pulmonary hypertension, increased pulmonary vascular resistance and pulmonary arteriolar obstructive disease can be predicted by echocardiographic measurement of RVPEP/RVET.

Annals of Dermatology 2002;14(1):1-5
BACKGROUND: Melanocytes synthesize melanin pigment by the action of specific enzyme tyrosinase. Melanogenesis inhibitors such as ascorbic acid, kojic acid, arbutin, hydroquinone have been developed for use in cosmetic preparations for the skin hyperpigmentation, but they are still unsatisfactory to efficacy and tolerance. OBJECTIVES: In this study, the inhibitory effects of seaweed extract(SCH-T2)on tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis were investigated with B-16 melanoma cell line. METHODS: The patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups;control, diazepam, and ketorolac plus diazepam groups. Pain intensity was assessed 5 times at every ten minutes from the beginning of the peeling using visual analog scale(VAS). RESULTS: The seaweed was added with 21 organic solvents and extracted during 12 hours at 20-To evaluate the inhibitory effects of SCH-T2 on tyrosinase activity following to extraction time and temperature, this study was done at 4, 8, 12, 24, 72 hours and 4, 10, 20, 30, 40℃. Also, the effects of whitening agents (kojic acid, arbutin, licorice extracts,SCH-T2)on tyrosinase activity were compared by measuring the IC50,the concentration of the compound at which half of the original tyrosinase activity is inhibited. RESULTS: 1.The inhibitory effects of SCH-T2 on tyrosinase activity were high at 60-80% ethanol as an extraction organic solvent and showed increase in proportion to concentration following to extract concentration, but showed little differences following to extraction time and temperature. 2.SCH-T2 has relatively stronger inhibitory effects on tyrosinase activity than arbutin and licorice extracts. 3. The inhibitory effects of SCH-T2 on melanogenesis following to extract concentration were greatly increased at more than 20㎍/ml. CONCLUSION: This study showed that SCH-T2 seaweed extract has strong inhibitory effect on tyrosinase activity and melanogonesis. So, the results of this study suggest that SCH-T2 seaweed extract can be used as a new whitening agent.

7.Effect of Intracellular ATP on Zn2+ Blockade of KATP Channels in Pancreatic Beta Cells.

Korean Journal of Aerospace and Environmental Medicine 1999;9(1):60-65
In the therapeutic or the nutritional aspects, Zn2+ has been used as a supplement in a variety of drugs. Most of divalent or trivalent cations affect ion channels in the cell membranes of various organs. In particular, Zn2+ has been regarded as a potassium (K+) channel blocker in the field of electrophysiology. ATP-sensitive K+ (KATP) channel, which is a kind of inward rectifier K+ channel, resides in the cell membrane of pancreatic beta cells and plays an important role in glucose-induced insulin secretion. The glucose increases intracellular ATP concentration, and this inhibits KATP channels. The inhibition of KATP channels activity depolarizes the cell, and subsequently, insulin is released by Ca2+ influx through the voltage- gated Ca2+ channels. Here, we demonstrate that KATP channels in the pancreatic beta cells are also the targets of extracellular Zn2+ blockade and its blockade is dependent on intracellular ATP concentration. This may be a compensatory mechanism preventing the oversecretion of insulin from the Pancreatic beta cells triggered by Zn2+ intake in a physiologically fasting condition.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1997;35(1):129-134
A collodion baby is born with a tough, inelastic parchment-like membrane covering the whole body surface. As the meinbrane fissures and peels, a more characteristic ichthyosiform change is evident beneath the collodion membrane. Uncommonly, normal skin is found under it. We herein present two cases af collodion baby, which were confirmed as a sporadic case of lamellar ichthyosis and a case of lamellar exfoliation of the newborn, respectively, after long-term clinical observation. It is necessary that detailed genetical and molecular biological studies should be perforrned in order to elucidate the fur:damental, molecular changes that cause these dramatic cutaneous changes.
