1.Dental Anthropologic Study on the High School Students of Che-ju island.

This dental anthropological study was performed to analyse male and female students of Che-ju high school students. Cephalometric X-rays and dental casts were obtained of 60 male and 60 female students and the Mean and Standard Deviation were obtained. There was no difference in craniofacial morphology between male and female students but the size of craniofacial skeleton of the male is bigger than that of the female. The distance from NB line to pogonion is longer in the male group, and it meant that mandibular symphysis of the male is well developed than the female. The size of teeth of the male is larger than that of the female and is significant in upper and lower canine and first molar. The size of upper arch width, intercanine width, basal arch width and lower basal arch width of the male is larger than that of the female, but arch length of the male and the female showed no significant difference.

2.Pineal Region Tumors : Clinical Analysis of 13 Cases.

We reviewed 13 patients treated in the Department of Neurosurgery of the Presbyterian Medical Center from 1979 to 1982 who had tumors in the region of the pineal body. The treatment of such tumors has been in a state of flux between conservative therapy(cerebro-spinal fluid shunting and radiotherapy) and direct surgical removal. We compared both modes of treatment and analysed the patients in terms of clinical, pathological and radiological points of view. Good results were obtained by supracerebellar and infratentorial surgical approach.

4.Analysis of Spontaneous Intracerebral Hematomas Confirmed by CT.

Since February 1978 until August 1982, we have made a diagnosis of 92 cases of spontaneous intracerebral hematomas by CT scan. These cases revealed the following results : 1) Hypertension was the most common cause of spontaneous intracerebral hematomas(63.0%), and followed by arteriovenous malformation(18.5%), aneurysm(9.8%), tumor bleeding(5.4%), blood dyscrasias(2.2%), and cerebral rete mirabile(1.1%). 2) Putaminal hemorrhages were found in 48.3%, subcortical hemorrhages in 29.3%, intracerebellar hemorrhages in 12.1%, thalamic hemorrhages in 10.3%. 3) The operative mortality in 56 cases was 36.8% and other case's mortality was 50%.

5.A Case with Perforated Gastric Leiomyoma.

Gastric leiomyomas, which arise from smooth muscle tissue, are the most common non-epi- thelial tumors occurring in the stomach. This tumor is most commonly found incidentally at surgery or autopsy. The incidence of the leiomyoma is about 1-3% of all gastric tumors and sex distribution is equal. We have recently experienced a 59-year-old housewife who had epigastric pain and soreness of one month's duration. Physical examination disclosed tenderness with palpated mass in the left upper quadrant. Gastrofiberscopic finding revealed esophageal diverticulum in the mid-esophagus and 2 x 2 x 1 cm sized submucosal intramural mass with centrally depressed umbilication through ulcerative change on the greater curvature of lower body. Within the umbilication, there were food materials and blood clots. The sleeve segmental resection of stomach was performed. The histopathologic and post operative findings were atypical leiomyoma, perforated with abscess formation to the omentum.

7.Bond strength of resin cements to zirconia ceramic.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Although zirconium oxide ceramics are more and more commonly used in restorative dentistry, for many clinical applications only limited data can be found in the literature. However, it is quite clear that hydrofluoric acid etching is impossible with zirconia ceramics. Therefore, other bonding techniques are required in order to lute these materials adhesively. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of surface treatments on shear bond strengths between two resin cements and a zirconia ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Experimental industrially manufactured yttrium-oxide-partially-stabilized zirconia ceramic discs (Adens, Korea) were used for this study. The ceramic specimens divided into five experimental groups and a control group (as received). Five surface treatments were studied. 1) sandblasting with 110 micrometer Al2O3 at 3 bars pressure 13 seconds at a distance of 10mm, 2) flame-treated with the Silano-Pen for 5 s/cm2, 3) grinding with a diamond bur, 4) sandblasting + Silano-Pen treatment, 5) diamond bur preparation+ Silano-Pen treatment. Acrylic plastic tube (5 mm in height and 3 mm in diameter) were filled with composite to fabricate composite cylinders. The composite cylinders were bonded to the ceramic specimens with either Superbond C & B or Panavia F resin luting agents. All cemented specimens were tested under shear loading until fracture on universal testing machine at a crosshead speed 1mm/min, the maximum load at fracture was recorded. Shear bond strength data were analyzed with oneway analysis of variance and Tukey HSD tests (p<.05). Treated ceramic surfaces and fracture surfaces after shear testing were examined morphologically using scanning electron microscope. Results: Ceramic surface treatment with Silano-Pen after sandblasting improved the bond strength of Superbond C & B resin cement. Superbond CandB resin cement at Silano-Pen after sandblasting(27.4 +/- 3.8 MPa) showed statistically higher shear bond strength than the others. CONCLUSION: Within the limitation of this study, Superbond C & B resin cement are suitable for cementation of zirconia ceramics and flame-treated with the Silano-Pen after sandblasting is required to enhance the bond strength.

8.An evaluation of the time-dependent dimensional stability of elastomeric impression materials .

Statement of Problem: The accuracy and dimensional stability of elastomeric impression materials have been the subject of numerous investigation. Few studies have addressed the effect of changes in time on the dimensional stability of impression materials. Purpose: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of elastomeric impression materials and storage time on dimensional stability. Materials and methods: A total of 75 impressions were made of epoxy resin dies mimicked prepared 3-unit fixed partial denture. The dies had 1 buccolingual, 1 mesiodistal and 1 occlusogingival lines and interpreped dot. Impression materials investigated included two polyether impression materials and three polyvinylsiloxane impression material. 15 specimens were made of each impression material and poured by type IV stone over times(30 minutes, 24 hours, 72 hours) after mixing; the same examiner measured each specimen 3 times at a magnification of 3.5*. All statistical tests were performed with the level of significance set at .05. Results: The results indicated that significant difference at any measuring point of stone dies of the polyvinylsiloxane and polyether impression materials when measurements at 30 minutes, 24hours, and 72 hours were compared; the length of measuring point increased significantly as time passed by. However, this result is not significant clinically. Analysis also showed significant differences at any measuring point when polyvinylsiloxane and polyether impression materials were compared and significant differences clinically. Conclusion: Under the conditions of this study, the shrinkage rate of the polyvinylsiloxane and polyether impression materials significantly increased as time passed by. The polyether impression materials showed higher shrinkage significantly, while the shrinkage rate of all five materials showed a significant time-dependent increase.

9.Physical Properties Of Relining Denture Base Resins With Different Polymerizing Methods.

This study would like to measure and compare water sorption and solubility of acrylic resins, with 3 different polymerizing methods, and tensile strength between denture base resin and relining resins. For this experiment, 3 different acrylic resins were used; heat polymerizing resin: Vertex (Dentmex, Zeist,Holland), autopolymerizing resin: Tokuso Rebase (Tokuyama Corp, Tokyo, Japan), and light curing resin: Mild Rebaron LC (GC Corp, Tokyo, Japan) The results were as follows; 1. Tokuso Rebase showed the lowest water sorption, followed by Mild Rebaron LC and Vertex. Among resins, there were some signigicant differences (P<0.05). 2. Vertex showed the lowest solubility, followed by Mild Rebaron LC and Tokuso Rebase. Among resins, there were some signigicant differences (P<0.05). 3. Intact Vertex showed the highest tensile strength, and Mild Rebaron LC had a more tensile strength than Tokuso Rebase. Between Vertex and the other resins, there were some signigicant differences (P<0.05). However, between Mild Rebaron LC and Tokuso Rebase, there was no statistical difference (P>0.05). About 50% of Rebaron LC showed cohesive fracture. 4. Tensile strength has more decreased after thermocycling than before, but there was no statistical difference (P>0.05).

10.Lesional Expression of Heat Shock Protein 70 in Pemphigus.

BACKGROUND: Heat shock proteins (HSP), especially the HSP 70 family, may play certain roles in the immunophysiology of some skin diseases such as psoriasis, pemphigus, and lichen planus. HSPs generally induce down-regulation of the process of apoptosis that is considered to be one of the acantholysis-producing pathways in pemphigus. OBJECTIVE: We planned to examine possible roles of HSPs 70/105 in the blistering process in pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and pemphigus foliaceus (PF), in connection with the detection results of apoptosis in local tissue specimens. METHODS: Immunohistochemical stainings and Western blot analysis were performed for the detection and semiquantitation of HSPs 70/105 in skin specimens from lesional, nonlesional, and normal control sites. Hoechst 33342 staining was simultaneously carried out to examine features of apoptosis in lesional skin specimens. RESULTS: The findings on expression of HSP were as follows. In PV, the expression of HSP 70 was minimum or negative; however, in PF, the expression was obvious and recognizable in lesional and perilesional normal skin. In contrast, HSP 105 was not detected in all cases of PV and PF. The features of apoptosis were evident at the lesional skin of all cases of pemphigus with acantholytic changes. CONCLUSION: PV and PF had different relative intensities of HSPs in lesional tissue stainings, especially in cases with HSP 70. This suggests that there may be subtle differences in the mechanisms causing acantholysis between PV and PF.
