We studied the serum electrolytes in the 727 normal persons who visited Busan University hosptial, Benedict Hospital and Maryknoll Hospital from 1970 to 1976. The results were as follows: 1. Mean value of the serum Na+ being measured in 729 normal persons was 138.7+/-6.2mEq/L and 140+/-6.5mEq/L in 450 male, while 136.8+/-6.6mEq/L in 279 female. 2. Mean value of serum Cl- being measured in 701 persons was 99.6+/-5.9mEq/L, and 99.7+/-6.0mEq/L in 437 male while 100+/-5.7mEq/L in 264 female. 3. Mean value of serum K+ being measured in 707 normal persons was 4.4+/-0.9mEq/L in 434 male, while 4.2+/-0.8mEq/L in 273 female. 4. Mean value of serum Ca+ being measured in 557 normal persons was 4.5+/-0.6mEq/L and 4.7+/-0.7mEq/l in 355 male, while 4.3+/-0.5mEq/L in 202 female. 5. Mean value of serum phosphorus being measured in 94 normol persons was 4.2+/-0.6mg%, and 4.1+/-1.0mg% in 65 male, while 4.5+/-1.5mg% in 29 female.

BACKGROUND: Clinical features of atopic dermatitis(AD) have been well described according to age in the English literature. In Korea there have been some reports about clinical analyses of AD. However, there is no report about the clinical characteristics of adult AD. OBJECTIVE: We tried to characterize the clinical features of adult AD by comparing them with the childhood/infantile type. In addition we aimed to study the prognostic factors that may be related to the persistence of dermatitis into adult life. METHODS: Patients with AD were divided into the adult and childhood/infantile types according to the patient's age. Sixty three adult patients were compared with 107 childhood/infantile patients. Various clinical characteristics of AD were compared between these groups. RESULTS: Orbital darkening, foot eczema, and extensor involvement were more frequently observed in the childhood/infantile type, whereas flexural lichenification, especially in the antecubital fossa, prurigo papules in the extensor part of the extremities, cheilitis, forehead lichenification, Hertoghe's sign, nipple eczema, and anterior neck fold involvement were more frequent in the adult type. Light sensitivity was more prominent in the adult type. Later age at onset of AD was observed in adult patients. The incidence of respiratory atopy (asthma and allergic rhinitis) was higher in the adult group. CONCLUSION: In the adult type flexural involvement with lichenification became more prominent and prurigo papules were more frequently observed in the extensor part of the extremities. Later onset of AD and association with respiratory atopy were considered to be bad prognostic factors.

A vestibular adenoma arising in mucin-secreting glands of the vulva is described. Grossly, the adenoma was a firm, well-demarcated solid mass with mucoid cut surface, measuring 3.5x3x3 cm, which was associated with an adjacent Bartholin's duct cyst. Microscopically, the solid mass was composed of proliferated mucous acini separted by fibromuscular septa and ducts lined by mucin-secreting columnar epithelium, transitional epithelium or metaplastic squamous epithelium. To our knowledge, less than 20 cases of such cases have been reported in the English literatures. However, whether the nature of proliferation is neoplastic or non-tumorous is still unclear.
Adenoma

We report a rare case of intrathoracic lymphangiomatosis associated with chylothorax in a 3-year-old boy. The patient had been healthy until he had chickenpox followed by continued dyspnea. The biopsy specimen showed proliferating lymphatic channels & spindle cells in the lung tissue. The boy died of respiratory failure despite conservative treatment and surgical treatment with pleurodesis. An autopsy was performed. Pleura and pericardium showed severe adhesion to the right lung parenchyma. The cut surface of lung showed thickened interlobular septum with honeycomb-appearance. Histologically, extensive intercommunicating and anastomosing endothelial-lined lymphatic channels were noted along the visceral and parietal pleura, pericardium, around the great vessels, and in the anterior mediastinum over the thymus. These lymphatic channels infiltrated into the pulmonary parenchyme along the bronchovascular bundles. There were scattered areas of spindle cell proliferation with extravasation of RBCs mimicking Kaposi's sarcoma. Histologic diagnosis and differential diagnosis on biopsy materials can be difficult to establish but awareness of the intrathoracic lymphangiomatosis and its various clinical presentation may be helpful for diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Recently the sensitive measurement of radiation damage to DNA using flowcytometric analysis of nucleoid preparations was reported which allows an analysis of damage within the DNA of single cells. We applied flowcytometric analysis of the nucleoids for the detection of DNA damage by UVB. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to establish the method of detecting UVB-induced damage of DNA by flowcytometry and to elucidate the usefulness of this method to detect cell damage. METHODS: Human melanoma cells were cultured and were irradiated with various of UVB. Immediately after UVB irradiation nucleoid suspensions were prepared and flowcytometric analysis was done. RESULTS: The changes in fluorescence, forward scatter, and side scatter reflected damage of DNA induced by UVB quite well especially at lower UVB doses. CONCLUSION: Flowcytometric analysis of nucleoid will be a useful methosd to detect DNA damage by UVB.

BACKGOUND: Because heterogeneity of the human tyrosinase gene has been reported, it is of vital significance to know the correct nucleotide sequence of tyrosinase in Koreans in order to study the molecular basis of oculocutaneous albinism. OBJECTIVE: This study was done to analyze the nucleotide sequence of tyrosinase gene in Koreans. METHODS: All exons were amplified from genomic DNAs and sequenced directly from three healthy Koreans. RESULTS: The nucleotide sequence of the tyrosinase gene in Koreans encode 511 amino acids with a molecular weight of 58,000. CONCLUSION: The nucleotide sequence of coding region is the same with that of pHTrl(Shibahara et al. Tohoku J Exp Med 156: 403-414, 1988). As we couldn't observe any polymorphisms in Koreans these results suggested the homogeneity of Korean people.

The management of the femoral shaft fracture in children is quite different from that of in adults. This report analysed the treatment and results in 63 children with fractures of the femoral shaft at the Chosun University Hospital during the period ranging from Jan. 1975 to Dec. 1978 and follow up study was made for 2 to 4 years following the fractures. End results obtained are as follows; 1. The sex ratio between the male and the female was 2.3: 1 and the type of fractures observed was transverse fracture(41.2%), oblique fracture (23.8%), spiral fracture (20.6%) etc. 2. The traffic accidents was most common cause of the fracture (60.3%) and the next most frequent one was fall (26.9%). 3. There was no clinical deformity at the fracture site after complete remodeling, when initial angulation was under 20 degrees. 4. The overriding of the fractured fragment in 10mm to 15mm between the age 2 to 10 years was permissible. 5. The average value of the overgrowth was 11.2mm and the growth stimulation caused no significant change under 2 years of age and over 11 years of age.

The authors investigated the radioallergosorbent test (RAST) for the specific IgE and the prick test with hose dust mite in 129 patients with atopic dermatitis(AD) wit4 four or more family numbers. RAST and prick test results were described according to family background of respiratory atopy(RA) and severity of AD. The results are summarized as follows : l. A comparison between the prick test results and RAST reactions gave a concordance of 88%. The prick test was more sensitive than the RAST. 2. The level of specific IgE in patients with personal history(PH) or family history(FH) of RA was significantly increased compared to those in patients with only AD. 3. In patients without PH and FH of RA, the level of specific IgE in patients with FH of AD was significantly increased compared to those in patients without FH of AD. 4. The level of specific IgE did not reflect the severity of AD. From the above results, it could be concluded that type I allergy to house dust mite is not directly related to AD and it occurs predominantly in those patients with AD wha have a predisposition to RA.
