PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine predictors of anxiety and PTSD in battered women. METHOD: The data were collected from 555 women who were stratified samples according to 15,000:1 from a target population in Korea from November 18, 2004 to February 18, 2005. The data was analysed using the SPSS program. RESULTS: Predictors of anxiety were self esteem, stress, state anger, social support, trait anger, negotiation, and psychological violence. These variables explained 55.8% of anxiety. Predictors of PTSD were self esteem, state anger, trait anger, psychological violence, stress, and anger-in. These variables explained 43.2% of PTSD. CONCLUSION: It is considered that the importance of separating the effects of the different types of violence when taking into account its effects on women's mental health. To promote women's mental health, it is needed to develop self esteem improvement programs, and anger and stress management programs.

PURPOSE: This meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effects of a self-efficacy promoting program and analyze its components. METHOD: The material used for this study were 18 self-efficacy promoting program studies carried out from Jan. 1980 to Oct. 2003. The studies were analyzed in different categories: 1) types of dependent variables 2) sample characteristics 3) types of experimental treatment conditions 4) types of self-efficacy source and 5) total amount of time RESULT: 1) The weighted mean of a self-efficacy promoting program ranged from 1.383 to 0.015 2) for the experimental treatment condition, exercise had a much larger effect in increasing general self-efficacy and self-care than education 3) the studies using 3 sources had a much larger effect in increasing self-care than the studies using 4 sources 4) a time period longer than 900 minutes had a much larger effect in increasing specific self-efficacy, general self-efficacy and self-care than in a time period shorter than 900 minutes. 5) effect size of specific self-efficacy was significantly higher than general self-efficacy. CONCLUSION: These results can be used to guide the development of a self-efficacy promoting program for nursing practice.

PURPOSE: This study was done to investigate the relationship among the variables, chronic pain, pain coping, fatigue, self-esteem, and depression in elders. METHOD: Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires from 270 older adults. Data analysis was done with SPSS 10.1 for descriptive statistics and a PC LISREL program for covariance structural analysis. RESULTS: According to modified model, chronic pain was found to have a significant direct and total effect on pain coping. Chronic pain and pain coping were found to have a significant direct and total effect on fatigue. Chronic pain, pain coping and fatigue were found to have a significant direct and total effect on self-esteem. Chronic pain, pain coping, and self-esteem were found to have a significant direct effect on depression. CONCLUSION: This modified model is considered appropriate for explaining the relationship among chronic pain, pain coping, fatigue, self-esteem, and depression in elders. Also, the findings support the development of an intervention strategy to relieve chronic pain in elders.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) on the shear bond strength (SBS) of brackets bonded to non-demineralized teeth with either phosphoric acid etching or self-etching primer. METHODS: Sixty human premolars were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatment groups (n = 15 each): phosphoric acid etching (group 1); self-etching primer (group 2); CPP-ACP for 2 weeks + phosphoric acid etching (group 3), and CPP-ACP for 2 weeks + self-etching primer (group 4). After bonding of the maxillary premolar metal brackets, specimens were subjected to shear forces in a testing machine. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe etching patterns on the enamel surfaces of all teeth. A 2-way analysis of variance was used to test for effects of CPP-ACP and etching system on SBS. RESULTS: Significantly higher mean SBSs were observed in groups subjected to phosphoric acid etching (i.e., groups 1 and 3; p < 0.05). On the other hand, SBSs did not appear to be influenced by CPP-ACP (i.e., groups 3 and 4; p > 0.05). We observed a uniform and clear etched pattern on the enamel surface of the phosphoric acid etching groups. CONCLUSIONS: CPP-ACP does not significantly affect the SBS of orthodontic brackets bonded to non-demineralized teeth, regardless of which adhesive method is used to bond the brackets.

Several Cases Have Been Reported As A Complication Of Interventional Or Endoscopic Procedures. Although A Case Of Gallbladder And Stomach Perforation During Gastric Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (Emr) Has Been Reported, We Encountered A Case Of Gallbladder Perforation During Gastric Emr Without Evidence Of A Perforation Of The Stomach, Which Has Not Been Reported In The Literature.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of self-efficacy promoting program on self-efficacy, self-care behavior and psychosocial adaptation in patients with a colostomy. METHOD: A non-equivalent control group pre test post test design was used. The self efficacy promoting programs was composed of a CD image program based on varicaious experience, education and telephone coaching program based on verbal persuasion, and Stoma care practice, and Self care performance based on performance accomplishment. This study was carried out from July 2, 2005 to April 20, 2006 and 21 patients with a colostomy at one of 2 hospitals participated. Descriptive statistics, chi-square-test, and Mann-whitney U test were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: There were significantly different for specific self efficacy, self care and psychosocial adaptation between the experimental group and control group. CONCLUSION: The self efficacy promoting program for patients with stomas was effective in improving degree of specific self efficacy, self care and psychosocial adaptation.

Polycythemia vera is one type of myeloproliferative disorder which occurs due to the clonal proliferation of hematopoietic stem cell related to the production of leukocyte and megakaryocyte which produces a little less than erythrocyte. Polycythemia vera has a peak incidence in the sixth decade of life with males affected slightly more frequently than females. Vasquez first described polycythemia vera as an autonomous erythrocytosis in 1892, and a further description, delineation of the disease process and a complete course outline were made in 1899, 1903 and 1938, respectively. Symptoms include pruritus, tinnitus, vertigo, gastrointestinal (GI) pain, and bleeding gums. Hyperuricemia and hyperuricosuria are present in about 40% of these patients. Complications are hemorrhage, thrombosis, post-polycythemic myeloid metaplasia, and leukemic transformation. In case of surgery, complications such as hemorrahge and thrombosis are highly likable to happen. We report a case of preoperative and postoperative of a 63-year-old male, who was diagnosed as oral cavity cancer in the mouth floor, with known history of hypertension and polycythemia vera. We considered that conservative management would be an advisable treatment for patients with uncontrolled systemic disease

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to evaluate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and thymidine phosphorylase (TP), and to correlate them with clinicopathological factors in uterine cervical neoplasia. METHODS: A total 81 cervical biopsy specimens obtained from Jan.1995 to Aug. 1996 at YUMC were evaluated for the expressions of VEGF and TP : 9 were designated as benign, 6 as CIN 1, 11 as CIN 2, 12 as CIN 3, and 43 as invasive squamous cell carcinoma of uterine cervix. We applied the immunohistochemistry using primary antibodies, such as VEGF and TP monoclonal antibody on formalin-fixed, and paraffin-embedded tissues. The results of immunostaining were correlated with various clinicopathological factors of cervical cancer and patient 5-year survival. RESULTS: As the cervical tumorigenesis progressed, there was significant increase of expression of VEGF and TP. VEGF expression was inversely correlated with stage of cervical cancer and showed a significant correlation with the depth of stromal invasion and lymphovascular space invasion. TP expression in cancer cells was significantly high in tumors with advanced stage, large tumor size, pelvic node metastasis. There was an inverse relationship between VEGF and TP expression. VEGF had no significant power to predict patient survival but TP showed statistically significant correlation with poor survival. CONCLUSIONS: Both VEGF and TP play important roles in invasiveness of uterine cerival neoplasia. However, the former is important in early process and the latter in the late process of cervical tumorigenesis and affects the patient's survival in uterine cervical carcinoma, respectively.
