In situ hybridization using biotinylated HPV(Human papillomaviruses) probes was performed to detect HPV DNA in 24 patients with genital wart-like lesions. The lesions were divided into two groups, with or without dysplastic changes histologically. We could detect HPV6/11 in 13 of 17 lesions(76.5%) without dysplastic changes. HPU16/18 was detected in a case with dysplastic changes. HPV6/ll was also detected in a case considered to be misdiagnosed as bowenoid papulosis. Oncogenic HPV such as HPV16/18 was found in one of histologically splastic lesions(14.3%).

Background: Contact between the human pulmonary system and bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens can induce airway diseases. Although pathogen-induced mucus oversecretion and hyperproduction are frequently observed in the human respiratory tract, the molecular mechanisms of pathogen-induced mucus hypersecretion and overproduction remain unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the physiological signaling mechanism of ATP-induced MUC8 gene expression in human airway epithelial cells. Methods: Real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, a cytokine array, and a Ca2+ concentration assay were performed to investigate the ATP/P2Y2-induced MUC8 gene expression levels in human airway epithelial cells. Results: The ATP/P2Y2 complex robustly secreted interleukin (IL)-6 in a time-dependent manner, whereas siRNA-P2Y2 did not. Moreover, ATP/P2Y2 induced MUC8 gene expression. IL-6 secreted by ATP strongly elevated ATP/P2Y2-induced MUC8 gene expression compared to ATP/P2Y2. Interestingly, a specific STAT3 inhibitor, 5,15-DPP, dramatically inhibited ATP/P2Y2/IL-6-induced STAT3 phosphorylation and resulted in an approximately 5-fold decrease in MUC8 gene expression. Conclusions We showed that IL-6-activated STAT6 is essential for ATP/P2Y2-induced MUC8 gene expression as part of inflammatory signaling by cytokines during airway inflammation. Our results provide a new molecular understanding of the signaling mechanism of MUC8 gene expression during airway inflammation.

Prenatal Ultrasonographic findings of meconium peritonitis show calcificalion, and abdominal echogenic masses such as pseudocyst. Also, we can find availability of 3 dimensional ultrasonography above these descriptions. We present a case of meconium peritonitis in uterus which was diagnosed by means of prenatal 2D & 3D ultrasonography with brief review of literatures.

Carney triad is a rare syndrome of unknown etiology characterized by having at least two out of three following neoplasms: gastrointestinal stromal tumor, pulmonary chondroma and extra-adrenal paraganglioma. About 100 cases have been reported worldwide. We report a case of Carney triad in a 42-year-old woman presented with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor in the stomach and a malignant functioning paraganglioma in the retroperitoneum that was fatal five years after diagnosis. The gastrointestinal stromal tumor was diagnosed as intermediate-risk of aggressive behavior and diffusely positive for c-kit whereas the retroperitoneal paraganglioma was negative for c-kit. Genetic analyses showed no mutations of KIT, PDGFRA, SDHB, SDHC, and SDHD genes in both tumors. To our best knowledge, this is the first case of Carney triad in Korea.

Leflunomide is a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug that has been available in Korea since 2003. Leflunomide induced interstitial pneumonitis has been reported as an adverse effect in other countries but not in Korea. A 57-year-old woman was treated with leflunomide since she had been resistant to methotrexate, hydroxychloroquine and sulfasalazine. She developed high fever, dyspnea, and non-productive cough 3 months after the administration of leflunomide. She was diagnosed leflunomide-induced interstitial pneumonitis based on history, physical, laboratory, radiologic and pathologic findings. The patient was treated by prednisolone 1 mg/kg/day with cholestyramine 24 g/day, resulting in dramatic improvement. Here we report a case of leflunomide induced pneumonitis treated successfully with high dose steroid.

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) should be correctly identified to the species level, because of different treatment plans among NTM species. This study was performed to assess the usefulness of real-time PCR and melting curve analysis in the identification of NTM. METHODS: One hundred fifty-two clinical NTM isolates were identified to the species level by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (PRA). Those strains were then identified by multiplex real-time PCR and melting curve analysis on the 16S rRNA gene and hsp65 gene. RESULTS: In the 16S rRNA gene fragment analysis, M. abscessus-M. chelonae group showed melting point at temperatures above 65 degrees C and M. avium complex (MAC; M. avium and M. intracelluare) below 48 degrees C, which differentiated M. abscessus-M. chelonae group and MAC from other NTM. In the hsp65 gene fragment analysis, M. abscessus-M. chelonae group was clearly divided into M. abscessus type I, M. abscessus type II, and M. chelonae according to the melting points at 61.25 degrees C, 66.06 degrees C, and 57.58 degrees C, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: With the multiplex real-time PCR and melting curve analysis of 16S rRNA and hsp65 genes, M. abscessus and M. chelonae were readily identified and MAC were differentiated from other NTM. Especially, M. abscessus and M. chelonae, which were not differentiated from each other with the 16S rRNA gene fragment analysis, were identified with hsp65 gene fragment analysis.

A 69-year-old man was referred with left exophthalmos. Computed tomographic (CT) findings detected a well-circumscribed mass in the left side of the intraorbital cavity. At that time, he refused the further evaluation and treatment. About three years later, the size of the mass had enlarged, and the patient's symptoms were getting worse. The mass was completely removed with frontotemporal craniotomy and superolateral orbitotomy. In operative findings, the mass had originated in the lacrimal gland and was well-encapsulated without invasion to the surrounding tissue. In the pathologic findings, the tumor consisted of pleomorphic adenoma with osteosarcomatous change of stromal components. Postoperatively, the adjuvant radiotherapy was done four weeks later. The patient's symptoms were improved. The pleomorphic adenoma with osteosarcomatous change is extremely rare and appropriate treatment is not clearly established. We would like to report this rare case with a review of the literature.

In Behcet's disease, thrombocytopenia has rarely been reported in association with the hemolytic uremic syndrome, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura or in association with cyclosporine or chlorambucil in the treatment of ocular inflammatory disease and meningoencephalitis. In this paper we report a case of thrombocytopenia in a 33-year-old female with Behcet's disease who has taken no medications for three years. After history taking, physical examination, routine laboratory and bone marrow examination, we diagnosed her case as idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). She recovered with high dose steroid treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first report having ITP in a patient with Behcet's disease.
