1.Wettability and cellular response of UV light irradiated anodized titanium surface.

PURPOSE: The object of this study was to investigate the effect of UV irradiation (by a general commercial UV sterilizer) on anodized titanium surface. Surface characteristics and cellular responses were compared between anodized titanium discs and UV irradiated anodized titanium discs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Titanium discs were anodized and divided into the following groups: Group 1, anodized (control), and Group 2, anodized and UV irradiated for 24 hours. The surface characteristics including contact angle, roughness, phase of oxide layer, and chemical elemental composition were inspected. The osteoblast-like human osteogenic sarcoma (HOS) cells were cultured on control and test group discs. Initial cellular attachment, MTS-based cell proliferation assay, and ALP synthesis level were compared between the two groups for the evaluation of cellular response. RESULTS: After UV irradiation, the contact angle decreased significantly (P<.001). The surface roughness and phase of oxide layer did not show definite changes, but carbon showed a considerable decrease after UV irradiation. Initial cell attachment was increased in test group (P=.004). Cells cultured on test group samples proliferated more actively (P=.009 at day 2, 5, and 7) and the ALP synthesis also increased in cells cultured on the test group (P=.016 at day 3, P=.009 at day 7 and 14). CONCLUSION: UV irradiation induced enhanced wettability, and increased initial cellular responses of HOS cells on anodized titanium surface.

4.A Study of the Prepregnancy Body Mass Index and Two-month-postpartum Weight Loss in the Uncomplicated Term Pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the mean two-month-postpartum weight loss, standard deviations and the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th percentiles in the uncomplicated term pregnancy and to examine association between prepregnancy body mass index and two-month-postpartum weight loss. METHODS: We analyzed the two-month-postpartum weight loss data from 175 women who had healthy singleton term pregnancy in Han-il Hospital (Jan 2002-Dec 2002). Data were categorized in three groups according to body mass index. RESULTS: Mean two-month-postpartum weight loss was 9.46 +/- 3.42 kg. There was no statistically significant difference between prepregancy BMI groups and two-month-postpartum weight loss. The more weight gained during pregnancy, the more that was lost at two-month-postpartum. Parous women retained more of their pregnancy weight. Compared with women who delivered vaginally, women who delivered cesarean experienced greater weight loss at two-month-postpartum. CONCLUSION: More careful postpartum care according to the two-month-postpartum weight loss table is needed to prevent long-term obesity.

5.A Study of the Monthly Weight Gains of Noncomplicated Pregnancies.

OBJECTIVE: Mean weight gains, standard deviations were calculated for each gestational months and the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th percentiles were determined. And the influence of prepregnancy body mass index and/or parity on monthly weight gain was investigated. METHODS: We analyzed the monthly weight gain data from 876 women who had healthy sigleton term pregnancy in Han-il Hospital(Jul 2001-Jun 2002). Data were categorized in three groups according to the prepregnancy body mass index. RESULTS: The monthly weight gain table has been determined and 'Sigmoid(S) shaped' monthly weight gain curve was presented. Primipara and multipara have less weight gain than nullipara in the 5th and the 7th-11th months. Monthly weight gains adjusted for parity and age were significantly different among prepregnancy body mass index groups from the 4th month. CONCLUSIONS: More careful prenatal care according to the monthly weight gain-gestational month tables is needed to prevent a lot of complications which may be associated with abnormal weight gain during pregnancy.

Ovarian pregnancy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy that is often difficult to diagnose. The diagnostic criteria were described in 1878 by Spiegelberg, which comprise that the pregnancy is in the ovary and does not involve the tube. Ovarian pregnancy occurs in the corpus luteum, and is usually accompanied with the rupture of the ovary and massive hemoperitoneum. It presents as a hemorrhagic ovary and frequently misdiagnosed as a ruptured corpus luteum. We have experienced a case of ovarian pregnancy and reviewed it briefly.

7.Human Platelet Antigen Genotyping Using a Multiplex Single-Base Primer Extension Reaction in Koreans.

BACKGROUND: Alloimmunization of human platelet antigens (HPA) is associated with clinically significant disease, such as platelet refractoriness, neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia, or posttransfusion purpura. It is determined by single nucleotide polymorphism of genes for platelet membrane glycoprotein. To date, approximately 27 HPAs have been discovered, and their frequencies differ depending on ethnicity and country. METHODS: We conducted an investigation of prevalence of HPA in the Korean population using a multiplex single-base primer extension reaction (SNaPshot). With 84 specimens from healthy donors, HPA genotyping was performed on 11 different HPAs, including HPA-1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -6, -7, -8, -9, -13, and -15. RESULTS: A total of 90 blood samples were genotyped. The genotype frequencies of HPA were as follows: HPA-1a/1a: 100.0%, -2a/2a: 83.3%, -2a/2b: 14.3%, -2b/2b: 2.4%, -3a/3a: 39.3%, -3a/3b: 52.4%, -3b/3b: 8.3%, -4a/4a: 100.0%, -5a/5a: 95.2%, -5a/5b: 4.8%, -6a/6a: 94.0%, -6a/6b: 6.0%, -7a/7a: 100.0%, -8a/8a: 100.0%, -9a/9a: 97.6%, -9a/9b: 2.4%, -13a/13a: 100.0%, -15a/15a: 23.8%, -15a/15b: 51.2%, and -15b/15b: 25.0%. CONCLUSION: The SNaPshot assay was employed for detection of SNPs in various clinically significant HPA genes. In addition to well-known frequencies of previously reported HPA-1 to -8, this study showed frequencies of HPA-9, -13, and -15 in Koreans for the first time. The SNaPshot technique might be suitable for use in actual clinical testing in patients with platelet alloimmunization.
