PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of structured information provided on self care knowledge, self care performance, and functional status. METHOD: The data were collected using self care knowledge and performance assessment tool, and functional status assessment tool from both group hospitalized patients at D hospital in Busan. RESULTS: There was a significant improvement(p=.032) in self care knowledge in experimental group compared to the control group. But there were not improvement in self care performance and functional status in experimental group compared to the control group. But comparing to pretest and posttest in experimental group, There were significant improvement in self care performance (p=.003) and functional status(p=.013). CONCLUSION: Structured information provided showed increased in the degree of knowledge, self care performance, and functional status. But the effect size of program which had been developed in this study was estimated small, so there is needed to modify this program and to research repeatedly.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to empirically investigate the determinants on oxygen free radical degree which causes biological damage focusing on smoking habit and health behaviors in daily life. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the subjects were adult males who submitted free radical tests among the examinees of the comprehensive medical testings at an university hospital in Suwon from 2008 to 2010. Total 497 samples were used in analyses for clarifying the relations of free radical degree to age, smoking, obesity, and other health behaviors. RESULTS: First, the degree of oxygen free radical increases by 0.164 as the age group increases (P<0.05). Second, the degree of oxygen free radical increases by 0.547 as the smoking habit increases (P<0.001). Third, the degree of oxygen free radical increases by 0.087 as the exposure to hazardous factors in workplace increases (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the study imply that the smoking habit has more great influence on the increase of oxygen free radical in body than any other health behaviors. The causality of free radical to smoking and health behavior was not identified due to the limit of the cross-sectional study so it needs to be studied prospectively in the future.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of self-care, symptom experience and disease state among the patients with liver cirrhosis and to identify its correlation. METHODS: The subjects were 220 patients with liver cirrhosis who were treated in D-university hospital in Busan. The instruments used for study were the self-care inventory, the symptom experience inventory and modified childpugh classification scale. RESULTS: The average points of the patient's self-care performance, symptom experience, and disease status were 3.67, 29.10 and 6.12 respectively. Their self care was negatively correlated to symptom experience, and symptom experience was positively correlated to disease state. CONCLUSION: This research findings suggested that active self-care by patients with liver cirrhosis might contribute to reduce various symptoms they can undergo and to prevent aggravation of disease state. Therefore, patients with liver cirrhosis have to carry out self care actively in daily life and discreet nursing intervention should be offered to facilitate their self-care.

It is well known that double contrast arthrography of the knee is a safe and technically simple procedure permitting accurate diagnosis of lesion of meniscus, especially tears. It has been utilized infrequently until recent years in our country. During the period of Oct. 1977 through Nov. 1978, double contrast arthrography of the knee had been performed in total of 52 cases with soft tissue injury of the knee and a total of 32 cases among them underwent the operation at the Armed Forces Taegu General Hospital. The arthrographic findings of the meniscus injury were presented and analyzed. The results were as follows: 1. Arthrography of the knee is a valuable diagnostic aid for meniscus injury. The diagnostic accuracy was 87.5 per cent for 32 cases. 2. In one case, tear of both menisci unsuspected on the basis of clinical examination were demonstrated one the arthrogram. 3. Arthrography revealed residual portion of the meniscus left after previous menisectomy in one patient. Reoperation resulted in cure. 4. Unnecessary surgery was reduced. 5. There were no complications of arthrography in thts series.

The claw-foot deformity is only a symptom of some primary lesion, not an entity in itself. The treatment of claw-foot usually depends on the type and severity of the deformity. In the past two years, authors have treated 7 cases of claw-foot, 3 of which were treated by Cole's anterior tarsal wedge osteotomy and 4 cases by Japas “V”-osteotomy of tarsus. In all 7 cases, Steindler's plantar fasciotomy for cavus deformity were combined and 1 case was combined with Achilles tendon lengthening. The followings were noted. 1. AlI patients were military personals and the ages were between 21 to 27 years old male. 2. Two patients were bilateral claw-foot deformity and both sides were operated. 3. The causes were secondary to poliomyelitis in one case and the others were idiopathic. 4. Postoperative complications were skin necrosis in one case and sensory disturbance on the dorsum of the first web space of the foot in 3 cases. 5. All patients can walk and run without pain after average 1 year follow-up period.

This study was performed to observe the present status of intestinal parasitic infections in a remote island, Yondo, located in southern part of Jeonranam-do(province), Korea. In February and May 1988, total 1,011 individual stool samples were collected and examined for intestinal helminths and protozoa using formalin-ether centrifugal sedimentation technique. The results are summarized as follows: Of 1,011 ingabitants examined, 398(39.4%) were positive for intestinal parasites. Helminth positives were 372(36.8%), and protozoan cyst positives were 56(5.5%). Ten species of parasites were found. Trichuris trichiura revealed the highest infection rate of 27.5%, Ascaris lumbricoides 17.4%, Taenia sp. 5.8%, Entamoeba coli 3.3%, Giardia lamblia 1.5%, Endolimax nana 0.8%, Hymenolepis nana 0.4%, hookworm 0.2%, Trichostrongylus orientalis 0.2%, and Entamoeba histolytica 0.2%, respectively. The female group showed higher positive rate (44.0%) than males (34.7%). Also, higher positive rates were observed among adults as compared with the group younger than 10 years old. Average value of E.P.G. was 1,876(range 200-17,800) in A. lumbricoides positives, and 327(range 200-1,600) in T. trichiura positive cases. In helminth egg positive cases, single infection was 63.4%, double infection 34.7%, and triple infection 1.9%, respectively. Among protozoan cyst positives, single infection was 94.6%, and double infection was 5.4%. The present study revealed that the prevalence of intestinal parasites among inhabitants in Yondo island is still so high that special control measures should be performed.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to confirm the efficacy of the urinary fluoride concentration/creatinine ratio for monitoring fluorine intake in fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities. METHODS: The correlations among the fluoride concentration in drinking water and that in the urine and fingernails of 52 preschool children (age, 60-72 months) from fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities were analyzed. RESULTS: The urinary fluoride concentration/creatinine ratio had a relatively high correlation with the fluoride concentration in drinking water (Pearson's correlation coefficient, 0.606; P<0.05). Further, this ratio was significantly positively correlated with the urinary fluoride concentration (Pearson's correlation coefficient, 0.374; P<0.01). However, there was no significant correlation between this ratio and the fluoride concentration in fingernails (Pearson's correlation coefficient, 0.145; P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study suggest that the urinary fluoride concentration/creatinine ratio in children can be utilized as an index for monitoring excess fluoride intake in fluoridated communities.

Apert syndrome is an uncommon congenital disorder characterized by malformation of the skull, most often acrocephaly or oxycephaly, in association with symmetrical syndactyly of both hands and feet. It is due to a disturbance in the growth of bone and soft tissue, affecting principally the head, hands, and feet. Recently we experienced a typical Apert syndrome expressed only in one neonate of dizygotic twin.

In an HIV-infected patient, cervical lymphadenopathy such as tubercuolosis, lymphoma, metastatic carcinoma must be differentiated from persistent generalized lymphadenopathy (PGL). Lymphoma is known as a late manifestation of HIV infection, generally occurring in patients with CD4+ T cell counts less than 200/microl. AIDS-related lymphomas were explained as variably associated with EBV infection, dysfunction of T cells, and HIV itself. The decision to perform a diagnostic open biopsy should be driven by a suspicion of malignancy or infection in the setting of a negative or inconclusive of FNA. Healthcare workers, especially those who deal with large numbers of HIV-infected patients, have a small but definite risk of becoming infected with HIV as a result of invasive procedures. Healthcare workers can minimize their risk of occupational HIV infection by following the guidelines discussed in this study.
