PURPOSE: This study was done to investigate the effects of acupressure on pruritus and sleep among patients undergoing hemodialysis. METHODS: The study design was a nonequivalent control group repeat measures quasi-experimental study. Data were collected from June to September 2015 in the kidney center at a hospital located in B city. Participants were 42 patients; 20 in the experimental group and 22 in the control group. For the experimental group, acupressure on the spots of Sameumgyo (SP6), Zoksamli (ST36), Hyolhae (SP10), and Gokji (LI11) was provided at the time of hemodialysis three times a week for 12 weeks. The numeric rating scale (NRS) was used to measure pruritus, and sleep was measured with the sleep scale developed by Jinju Oh et al. RESULTS: There was a significant decrease in pruritus (F=7.80, p=.008) and increase in sleep (F=80.90, p<.001) in the experimental group compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: The findings confirmed in the study show that acupressure is an effective nursing intervention to decrease pruritus felt by patients on hemodialysis and to increase the quality of their sleep.

BACKGROUND: Depression is the leading cause of lowering the quality of life of cancer patients and lung cancer is the most likely to cause depression. It is necessary to find out depression-related factors in lung cancer patients. METHODS: The study was a retrospective cohort study using medical records, and was a non-equivalent comparison group design. It involved patients diagnosed of lung cancer at the Konkuk University Medical Center from January to December 2012. Between antidepressants prescription group and non prescription group, socio-demographic factors, clinical factors, treatment-related factors and other factors were analyzed statistically. RESULTS: Antidepressant prescription group consisted of 23 people and non-prescription group of 206 people. Prescription rate of quetiapine was the highest 47.8% (11/23), followed by escitalopram (43.5%, 10/23), amitryptyline and trazodone (30.4%, 7/23). The prescription group was prescribed with an average of 1.9 antidepressants. Antidepressants were prescribed after average of 248 days from lung cancer diagnosis and prescription period per patient was average 177.5 days. According to the result of univariate logistic regression analysis between 2 groups, factors such as number of outpatient visit, number of admission, days of hospitalization, sleep disorder, and comorbidity were found to be statistically significant (p < 0.05). However, According multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that number of admission, days of hospitalization and sleep disorder were statistically significant (p < 0.05) excluding comorbidity. CONCLUSION: About 10% of lung cancer patients had received a prescription for antidepressants after lung cancer diagnosis. A sleep disorder, number of hospitalization and length of stay were identified as factors influencing the prescribing antidepressants.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between social capital and depression in adults in their 20s. Methods: The study used data from the Community Health Survey 2019 (CHS 2019). The CHS 2019 covered a representative sample of 229099 adults from 17 census tracts in the Republic of Korea, of which 19589 adults in their 20s were taken as subjects for this study. The subjects completed a survey with questions regarding demographic characteristics, built environment and social capital. The symptoms of depression were evaluated through the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-9. Multiple logistic regression was used to examine whether social capital was associated with depression. Results: The multiple logistic regression results indicated that social capital was associated with depression in adults in their 20s. When demographic characteristics and built environment were included in the analysis, trust, contact with relatives, contact with friends, and social activities were associated with depression in adults in their 20s. Conclusion A lack of social capital was associated with depression in Korean adults in their 20s. Our study suggests a need to look beyond individual factors to intervene in national and community social capital and prevent depression in adults in their 20s.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Heparin-conjugated fibrin (HCF) is suitable for the release and localization of bFGF. We analyzed the effects of a bFGF delivery system using HCF with human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (HBM- MSCs) in a dog ischemic limb model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Animals were divided into HBM-MSCs, HBM-MSCs+HCF, bFGF-HCF, and HBM-MSCs+bFGF-HCF groups. A total of 1x10(7) HBM-MSCs were injected per animal, and the amount of bFGF was 1 mg per dog. Ischemic muscles were harvested at eight weeks and six months after injection of cells. The HBM-MSCs+bFGF-HCF group exhibited decreased proportions of capillaries and arterioles six months after transplantation. However, there were more cells positive for the angiogenic factors, VEGF and PDGF, in the eight-week specimens compared with those harvested six months after transplantation. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated that a single injection of HBM-MSCs did not have significant long-term angiogenic effects; however, a bFGF delivery system using HCF exerted prolonged angiogenic effects when combined with HBM-MSCs.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare a 1% chlorhexidine gluconate/6l% ethanol (CHG/Ethanol) emollient and 7.5% povidone-iodine (PVI) scrub for antibacterial efficacy and effect on skin condition. METHODS: Twelve healthy newly employed nurses were recruited for this clinical study to evaluate the two hand cleansing agents. The CHG/Ethanol emollient hand preparation was applied without scrubbing and 7.5% PVI was applied using a scrub brush in 5-minute surgical scrubbing. Subjects used one method for 5 days and switched to the other method for another 5 days. Samples were taken for bacterial counts using the glove juice technique before and one minute after hand cleansing and again at the end of surgical operation on Day 1, 2, and 5. The VSS (Visual Scoring of Skin condition) scores and HSA (Hand Subject Assessment) scales were used to evaluate skin condition. RESULTS: Log reduction in bacterial counts by CHG/Ethanol emollient was greater than by PVI immediately after hand cleasing (log3.73 vs log1.66) and at the end of surgical operation (log3.49 vs log1.93) on Day 1. But there were no significant difference on Day 2 and 5. CHG/Ethanol emollient caused fewer skin problems than PVI; the VSS scores of the CHG/Ethanol emollient were better than those of PVI on Day 2, 3, 4, and 5 (P<0.05), and also HSA scale for change from baseline to the end of Day 5 was significantly better for the CHG/Ethanol emollient (22.5-->24.5 vs 23.0-->19.3). CONCLUSION: Compared to PVI, the CHG/Ethanol emollient hand preparation was shown to be more antibacterial and less irritation to skin. The results showed the possibility of using the waterless, scrubless agent for surgical hand scrub in Korea.

Ganglioneuromas are neuroectodermal tumors composed of varying amount of ganglion cells, nerve fibers, supporting cells of the enteric nervous system. Ganglioneuromas of the GI tract are rare tumors. A 50-year-old man came to our hospital due to the mass of liver and adrenal gland which was examined with ultrasonography at local medical center. On admission, abdominal magnetic resonance imaging was taken and liver biopsy was done. The mass of liver was hyperplastic nodule. At colonoscopy, about 0.3~0.8 cm sized six polyps were noted. Except the 0.6 cm sized semipedunculated polyp of the ascending colon, the others were tubular adenomas. Histological examination of the polyp of the ascending colon revealed localized proliferation of nerve fibers and ganglion cells. These cells are positive for S-100 protein by immunihistochemistry. Therefore, he was diagnosed with polypoid ganglioneuroma of the ascending colon. We report this case because the solitary ganglioneuroma in large intestine without systemic disease was rare.

Ischemic limb diseases are induced by different obstructions of peripheral arteries. These obstructions result in insufficient nutrient and oxygen supplies to the extremities, thereby leading to severe tissue damage that is in turn related to severe morbidities and mortalities. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been isolated from various sources. These cells are multipotent with respect to differentiation and are also characterized by migration, immune suppression, and secretion of paracrine factors. Mesenchymal stem cells have been proposed to have therapeutic potential for the treatment of ischemic limb diseases. In preclinical experiments, injection of single MSCs has been shown to increase angiogenesis and blood flow in ischemic hindlimb animal models; several molecular mechanisms of angiogenesis have also been elucidated. Furthermore, modified strategies have been developed for enhancing angiogenesis and the efficacy of MSCs. These strategies have demonstrated significant effects in pre-clinical studies. In clinical trials, MSCs have shown significant effects in the treatment of ischemic limb diseases. In this review, we focus on the therapeutic properties of human MSCs and the modified methods for enhancing angiogenesis in pre-clinical experiments. We also discuss the clinical applications of MSCs for treating limb ischemia.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe technological development, caring attributes and professional self-concept as perceived by nurses in YanBian. METHOD: Data were collected using an instrument containing 137 Likert items was administered to 477 RN's working in general hospitals in YanBian. The instrument contained sections which examined technological influences questionnaire(TIQ), caring attributes questionnaire(CAQ), and professional self-concept nursing inventory(PSCNI). RESULT: Descriptive and inferential statistics revealed by marital status and position. Married, working special ward nurses reported a higher TIQ score than that of unmarried and working general ward and OPD. PSCNI and CAQ score of head or supervisor nurses were higher than that of staff nurses. Subjects revealed very low score of CAQ, while PSCNI score was higher than that of other Asian countries such as Korea, Beijing China, HongKong China and Japan as proved in former study. CONCLUSION: Useful information for educators and nurse administrators is provided from this results. Further study needs to be done to discuss in the light of cultural and environmental differences between YanBian(Korean-Chinese) and Korean nurses.

This study was carried out to reduce children's sugar, natrium and fat intakes and establish their healthy lifestyle. To achieve these goals, we developed an educational web site and an e-learning system. The targets of this web site are children, parents and educators. This site has various information about sugar, natrium and fat, and has special menus for each target: such as the 'Let's study' for children, 'Guides for child's eating' for parents, and 'Educational softwares, Lesson plans/materials, and Textbooks/Teaching guides' for educators. We developed three nutrient characters and applied them to the web site. We provided information in the form of texts, images, flash and sounds. This site has special boards in 'Nutrition cafe' menu to interchange information or their successful stories between the connecters. We developed an e-learning system with two courses. One is for junior elementary students and the other is for senior students. Children can study each nutrient step by step in a course according to their academic ability and concern. Also, they can evaluate their academic achievement in this system, which was uploaded into 'Let's study' in children menu in the web site. Conclusively this web site and e-learning system could contribute to reducing children's sugar, natrium and fat intakes by helping children study them systematically and effectively by on-line system. We expect this e-learning system would be a new nutrition education system to make nutrition education more active.
