Glycogen Storage Disease Type I*

We experienced a case of a tracheoesophageal cyst in the posterior mediastinum of a three-year-old girl, who complained of cough and fever. We confirmed this case by computerized tomography and pathologic examination after surgical resection. A brief review of the literature is presented.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the radiographic and clinical results of displaced transverse patellar fractures using a tensioned anterior figure-eight wire placed through two cannulated screws MATERIALS AND METHODS: 9 patients with displaced transverse patellar fractures treated with cannulated screws and figure-eight wiring were analyzed retrospectively. The mean age was 53 years (range, 22 to 68 years). Controlled passive range of motion exercise were started on the first postoperative day. Full weight bearing was allowed as tolerated. The patients were evaluated with radiographs, clinical examination and Levack's scoring system. RESULTS: All fractures healed and mean time elapsed for union was 9.4 weeks (range, 8 to 12 weeks). All patients regained full knee range of motion. Clinical results according to the Levack's scoring system were excellent in 8 cases and good in 1 case. We found no complications like loss of reduction and soft tissue irritation caused by the wire and screw, loosening or migration of hardware. CONCLUSION: Anterior figure-eight wiring through paired cannulated screws is appropriate for transverse patellar fractures, is possible early knee motion exercise and weight bearing.

Hepatitis*

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an essential nutrient of most living tissues. We established a strain of Gulo-/- mice with known deficiency, in which vitamin C intake can be controlled by diet, like humans, and investigated the differentially expressed proteins following treatments with Helicobacter pylori and diethylnitrosamine (DENA) in the liver of Gulo-/- mice using a proteomic approach. Expression of p53, 14-3-3epsilon and 14-3-3delta in Gulo-/- mice liver tissue was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. 2-DE maps constructed from Gulo-/- mice liver and differentially expressed proteins in liver tissue were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF/MS). In Gulo-/- mice after H. Pylori infection, followed by treatment with DENA, no differences in p53, 14-3-3epsilon and 14-3-3delta were observed by immunohistochemistry. Proteome analyses using MALDI-TOF/MS resulted in successful identification of 12 proteins (nine proteins were up-regulated and three were down-regulated). Specifically, peroxiredoxin-6 and Alpha-1-antitrypsin 1-4 were up-regulated in liver after H. Pylori infection followed by treatment with DENA. These results indicated that oral supplementation with vitamin C led to rescue of Gulo-/- mice from vitamin deficiency, and protected the liver from H.pylori infection and/or DENA effect, and vitamin C also protected the liver against oxidative stress.
