2.EFFECTS OF AGING AND THERMAL CYCLING ON THE BIAXIAL RLEXURE STRENGTH OF VENEERING RESIN COMPOSITES FOR CROWN.

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of aging and thermal cycling on the biaxial flexure strength of four commercially available veneering resin composites for crown(Dentacolor : DC, Artglass : AG, Esternia : ET and Targis : TG). Disc specimens were fabricated in a teflon mold giving 12mm in diameter and 1mm in thickness. All samples were divided into 4groups. Group 1 was dried in a dessicator at 25degrees C for 30 days. Group 2 was immersed in distilled water at 37degrees C for 30 days. Group 3 was immersed in distilled water at 65degrees C for 30 days. Group 4 was subjected to 10,000 thermal cycles between 5degrees C and 55degrees C, and the immersion time in each bath was 15 seconds per cycle. Biaxial flexure test was conducted using the ball-on-three-ball method at the cross head speed of 0.5mm/min and fracture surfaces were observed with scanning electoron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. Weibull modulus values, except for the AG group, decreased after thermal cycling treatment. 2. Biaxial flexure strength values of aging group at 37degrees C were th lowest in all sample groups. Except for the DC group, strength values were significntly decreased for the drying group. 3. After thermal cycling test, the highest value of biaxial flexure strength of 188.8 MPa was observed in the ET group and the lowest value of 73.2 MPa was observed in the DC group. The strength values showed the significant differences in each group (p<0.05). 4. Observation of surfaces after thermal cycling test revealed the ditching in the part f surrounding large fillers.

7.Renovascular Hypertension in Children.

The application of fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology to the soft tissue tumors had been neglected. In recent years, however, FNA has been used increasingly in the preoperative diagnosis of these tumors due to its usefulness and accuracy. We present 3 cases of liposarcoma, myxoid, myxoid with round cell, and pleomorphic, diagnosed by FNA cytology with histologic confirmation. Good correlation between his- tologic and FNA cytologic findings was found. Although the cytologic appearances of liposarcomas varied with histologic type, the main criterion was the presence of atypical multivacuolated lipoblast with characteristically scalloped nuclei.

8.Treatment of endometrial hyperplasia with Medroxyprogesterone acetate(MPA).

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the response of hyperplastic endometrium to Medroxyprogesterone acetate according to the histologic types such as simple typical, complex typical and atypical hyperplasia. METHODS: A total of 79 patients with histologically proved endometrial hyperplasia were enrolled into this prospective study between March 1996 and May 1998. Patients without atypia were placed on a regimen of cyclic therapy with 10mg MPA orally, each day for 14days per month for 3 months. In the cases in which hyperplasia did not regress , MPA was increased to 20mg. Patients with atypical hyperplasia received continuous MPA therapy, 20mg orally each day for 3 month. All patients were followed up for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 1 year(mean 7 months). RESULTS: In patients with simple typical hyperplasia, 45 patients(80.4%) had regression, 11 patients(19.6%) had persistence and none had progression. In patients with complex typical hyperplasia, 10 patients(83.3%) had regression, 2 patients(16.7%) had persistence and none had progression. But, in patients with atypical hyperplasia 5 patients(45.4%) had regression, 4 patients(36.4%) had persistence and 2(18.2%) patients had well differentiated endometrial adenocarcinoma. There was no recurrence during the follow up. CONCLUSION: This data suggest that most women with typical hyperplasia respond to progestin therapy, but there is high failure rate of response to progestin therapy and risk of endometrial cancer in patients with atypical hyperplasia. If the young patient desires to preserve her fertility, then progestin therapy may be considered as primary treatment in patients with atypical hyperplasia. But older patients in whom fertility is not an issue, hysterectomy should be selected as treatment of choice for atypical lesion.

9.The Study of the Effect on s-GOT, s-GPT after the Enflurane Auesthesia.

In order to observe the effect on liver function after exposure to enlurane which has relatively minimal hepatotoxic effect, we evaluated the changes of the s-GOT & s-GPT levels caused by general anesthesia with enflurane. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of enflurane on liver function by comparing the preoperative and postoperative(1st day, 3rd day, 5th day, and 7th day) liver function(s-GOT & s-GPT) tests is il cases of the first general anesthesia with enflurane and 15 cases of a second general anesthesia with enflurane. The results were as folllows: 1) The 1st operative group. a. There are 5 cases (45%) of significant changes of s-GOT levels and no case of significant change in sGPT levels. b. In most of cases, the level of s-GOT & s-GPT have returned to normal values on the 7th postoperative day. 2) The 2nd operative group. a. The increase in the levels of s-GOT was found in 10 cases, and the s-GPT in 6 cases. b. Postoperatively, the simultaneous increase in the levels of s-GOT & s-GPT were found in 4 cases. c. On the 7th postoperative day, the levels of s-GOT & s-GPT was not normal in 3 cases, and not normal for s-GPT in 2 cases. The above results show that the higher of levels of s-GOT & s-GPT after the second general anesthesia with enflurane apparent compared to the levels after the first general anesthesia with enflurane. And it can be assumed that the extreme precaution is necessary in conduction the second general anesthesia with enflurane.

10.Relationship between Serum Levels of Homocysteine and Folate and Seizure Severity in Patients with Idiopathic Epilepsy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: High serum homocysteine level is recognised as one of risk factors for epileptic seizure. Folate is involved in the homocysteine metabolism and low serum folate level increases the frequency of the seizure activity. The purpose of this study is to examine the changes of the serum levels of homocysteine and folate in epileptic patients and to evaluate the correlation between the severity of seizure and serum levels of homocysteine and folate. METHOD: Subjects were 17 patients who were diagnosed as idiopathic epilepsy and the control group was composed of age and sex matched 17 healthy adults. The serum homocysteine level was measured with the Chemiluminescent Immunoassay (CLIA), and folate level was measured with Radioimmuno assay (RIA). The severity of seizure was measured by using National Hospital Seizure Scale. RESULTS: The serum level of homocysteine was significantly higher in the patients group than in control group. However, the serum level of folate was not different between two group. The relationship between the seizure severity and the serum levels of homocysteine and folate showed positive correlations. CONCLUSIONS: There results reveal that the serum homocysteine may effect on the epileptic seizure severity.
