We studied the contents of referral sheets of the patients transferred to DMC Emergency Center from Jan 1, 1999 to Jan 31, 1999. The study far the completion and chief complaints in the referral sheets shows the followings. 1. Examining the referral sheets status of disease, name and age record of 5 major items grade 0.92, the highest point, examining item and laboratorial record grade 0.72, dignosis record grades 0.38, and patients condition and diagnosis opinion record grade 0.10. 2, Name and age item had high completion score in referral sheets from local clinic and hospital for secondary referral level. For address item, however, local clinic scored 0.63 and hospital for secondary referral level scored 0.28, which showed statistically significant difference(P<0.001). 3. In the aspect of severity, name and age record leveled 0.94 to the non emergency patient, 0.92 to the emergency patient, 0.91 urgent patient, showed and no statistic significant difference. 4. The major 10 symptoms of the complaints were these the pain of abdomen and pelvis(25.2%), somnolence and stupor, coma(13.6%), headache(10.9%), and open wound of head(4.0%), ranked 10th common symptom level.

Rumex japonicus Houttuyn are ubiquitous plants, which are found in marshes or in wet areas. The root of Rumex japonicus Houttuyn has been used for the treatment of skin diseases including fungal infections of the skin since older times in Japan and China. This study was undertaken to investigate the antifungal activity of the alcoholbenzene extract of Rumex japonicus Houttuyn in vitro. During this experiment the extracts of Rumex japonicus Houttuyn were diluted seriaIly in the Sabouraud's dextrose agar and fungal mats or fungal suspensions of isolated strains of dermatophytes were inoculated into each medium containing different concentrations of test materials. Lymphoepithelial carcinoma is a rare subtype of undifferentiated carcinoma in the salivary gland. The incidence of lymphoepithelial carcinoma is about 0.4% among the patients with major salivary gland tumors. It has a racial preference; about 75% of the patients are of Mongolian ancestry. We report a case of lymphoepithelial carcinoma arising in the left parotid gland of a 52-year-old man. Grossly, the tumor was relatively well demarcated, gray-white, and solid. Microscopically, the irregular shaped syncytial tumor cell islands were evident within lymphoplasma cell-rich and desmoplastic stroma. The carcinoma cells had large vesicular nuclei and prominent nucleoli. The tumor invaded the surrounding salivary gland tissue. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was demonstrated by in situ hybridization for EBV-encoded RNA-1 (EBER-1) and polymerase chain reaction for EBV nuclear antigen-1 (EBNA-1).

Pigmented neurofibroma, a variant of neurofibroma, has rarely been observed in patients with or without neurofibromatosis. Pigmented neurofibroma is characterized histologically by the coexistence of scattered melanin-laden cells and benign spindle cells with neural differentiation. We report a case of pigmented neurofibroma in a 22-year-old female patient.

It has been well known that the knee joint is burdened on motion and weight bearing and structurally, it is more frequently injuried than other joints. Injuries to the ligaments of the knee joint are of frequent occurrence because of the increasing traffics and popularity of sports. It seems to be impotant to study on the mechanism of Injury, method of physical examination and treatment of the Iigamentous injuries of the knee. The purpose of this paper is to get accurate diagnosis and proper treatment. 68 cases of ligamentous injuries in 65 patients who were admitted and treated at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of Hanyang University Hospital from May, 1975 to April, 1979 have been reviewed. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The ligamentous injuries of the knee were more prevalent in male 4.9 times than female; and frequently occured in 20 to 30 decades (60%). 2. Traffic accident was the most common cause, and the most frequent injury associated with the ligament injuries of the knee was fracture. 3. Medial collateral ligament was ruptured most frequently and its tibial attachement was the most common site of the rupture. 4. Frequently, lateral collateral ligament was detached from the fibular attachment, anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments were ruptured through their substances. 5. There were 3 cases of isolated cruciated ligament injury, one was anterior and others were posterior. 6. Excellent or good result was obtained in 77.3% by operative treatment and in 93.3% by nonoperative treatment. 7. Early repair (under two weeks) gave much better results than late repair.

The purpose of this investigation was to study the changes in the epiphyseal plate of growing mice by histological, histochemical and electron microscopic observation through the administration of radioactive isotope I which induced hypothyroidism. To confirm hypothyroidism induced, radioimmunoassay for triiodothyronine was carried out and the morphologic changes of thyroid gland were observed by a light microscope. Of the total of eighty ICR strain of mice, fifty received single intraperitoneal injection of 20ue/gm of radioactive isotope I which were dissolved in 0.2ml of saline. Thirty received single intraperitoneal injection of only 0.2ml of saline and these mice were used as control groups. At the end of first, second, third, fourth, sixth and eighth week after injection, both saline injected and I treated mice were sacrifised. The thyroid gland and epiphyseal plate being removed were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, alcian blue and with uranyl acetate lead citrate in each for histological, histochemical and electron microscopic studies, The results obtained are as follows: 1. The thickness of epiphyseal plate was narrowed in the I treated animals. In each zone of epiphyseal plate the cell size was reduced although the cell numbers of each cell column were not changed. This means that the reduction of thickness in the epiphyseal plate was due mainly to decreased cell size and scanty territorial matrix not to decreased cell number. 2. Alcianophility was markedly decreased ln proliferative zone, indicating that acid mucopolysaccharide diminished markedly or was absent in the proliferative zone. 3. In electron microscopic examination, the number of rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum was decreased and their cisternae were narrowed. Decreasing tendency of dilatation and sacculation of cisternae, .reduced number of attached ribosomes on the endoplasmic reticulum, and atrophy of the Golgi apparatus with diminished number of its vesicles were noted, However glycogen particlea were accumulated. 4. The number and length of each trabeculae in the metaphysis just adjacent to the epiphyseal cartilage plate were reduced markedly, and occasionally chondrocytes which were not consumed by endochondral ossification were observed in the cartilage lattice.
