1.The Activity of Medical Terminology Practical Committee.
Journal of the Korean Medical Association 2002;45(10):1222-1225
This article describes the activity of the "Medical termonology practical committee (MTPC) of Korean Medical Association (KMA). In 2001, MTPC of KMA published the 4th edition of "English-Korean, Korean-English Medical terminology" which contains about 5,000 medical terms. The MTPC will continue reviewing the vocabularies. Obsolete terms will be discarded, new terms will be added, and the remainder will be revised by through-going revision of vocabulary. Our aim is to reflect the current usage of medical terms in the form of easily understandable Korean terms.

3.Statistical Observation on Congenital Anomalies of the Genito-urinary Tracts(1954-1964).
Korean Journal of Urology 1965;6(2):93-100
A statistical observation was made on congenital anomalies of the genitourinary tract of the out-patients and in-patients in the Department of Urology, Seoul National University Hospital during the period January, 1954 through December, 1964 and the following results were obtained. I. Statistics on out-patients. 1) During the period, 17,177 cases(14,909 males and 2,268 females) seen at our out-patient Department, 262 cases (239 males, 23 females) had congenital anomalies of the genito-urinary tracts, giving a rate of 1.53%(male: 1.31 %, female: 0.22 %). 2) A gradual tendency of annual increase is observed. 3) Of 262 cases, 234 cases or 89.3 % were seen by us at the ages of 39 years or below, and 28 cases or 10.7% at the ages of 40 years or above. 4) Of the anomalies, 86 cases or 32.8 % were testicular, 77 cases or 29.3 % urethral, 54 cases or 20.6 % penile, and 1 case or 0.3% vesical, the lowest. 5) Hypospadia is observed in 31.6 % of all the anomalies, cryptorchidism in 23.6 % and congenital complete phimosis in 18.7 % II. Statistics on in-patients. 1) During the period, of 1,158 cases hospitalized (886 males, 272 females), 88 cases (76 males, 12 females) had congenital anomalies of the genito-urinary tracts, giving a rate of 7.6 % (male: 6.5%, female: 1.1%). 2) A gradual tendency of annual increase is observed. 3) Of 88 cases, 71 cases or 80.7% were seen by us at the ages of 29 years or below, and 17 cases or 19.3 % at the ages of 30 years or above. 4) Of the anomalies, 34 cases or 38.6 % were urethral, 25 cases or 28.5 % renal, 21 cases or 23.9 % testicular and 1 case or 1.1 % vesical, the lowest. 5) Hypospadia is observed in 37.5 % of all the anomalies, cryptorchidism in 23.6 % and nephroptosis in 15.9%.

5.The Effects of Acute Variations in Plasma pH and Pco2 on Renal Bicarbonate Reabsorption in the Dog.

Korean Journal of Urology 1976;17(2):65-75
This study was aimed to comprehend the pattern of renal response in bicarbonate reabsorption during various alterations in acid-base equilibrium in twelve dogs. In metabolic acidosis induced by infusion of hydrochloric acid, as the plasma bicarbonate and filtered load of bicarbonate decreased eminently, urinary excretion of bicarbonate was found to be negligible. which was attributable to almost complete reabsorption via the hydration of CO2. In metabolic alkalosis induced by infusion of sodium bicarbonate, along with an increment of plasma concentration of bicarbonate, all filtered bicarbonate was reabsorbed, with negligible amount of excretion until the plasma level attains the renal bicarbonate threshold. During the respiratory acidosis and alkalosis with higher or lower arterial Pco2, the bicarbonate reabsorption varied linearly with plasma Pco2. The linear relationship indicated that the hydration of CO, was an important source of hydrogen ion for the reabsorption of bicarbonate. In this regards, however, in metabolic alkalosis the renal bicarbonate threshold was found to be much higher than that of respiratory acidosis. The characteristics of renal bicarbonate reabsorption, during the mixed acid-base disturbances of metabolic and respiratory origin with no considerable alteration of plasma pH, induced by hydrochloric acid infusion with hyperventilation or sodium bicarbonate infusion with CO2 inhalation, were quite similar to those in metabolic acidosis and alkalosis caused by simple hydrochloric acid or sodium bicarbonate infusion, respectively.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1984;19(3):509-516
Long term follow-up study was done on 38 cases of anterior fusion for spinal tuberculosis especially about effect of buttress graft. The average follow-up period was 16 months. 14 cases of effective buttress group were appeared' to achieve more rapid bony union and prevent further kyphosis or lateral wedging of the involved vertebral body than inadequate buttress group of 7 cases.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1987;22(5):1082-1089
In femorsl neck fracture, viability of the femoral head depends on the revascularization of the femoral head. The purpose of this study is to observe the effect of early fixation and anatomical reduction by measuring the Tc-99m-MDP uptake ratio of the femoral head in experimental animsls. Femoral neck region of 20 mature rabbits were osteotomized completely and divided into 2 groups ; each group consisted of 10 rsbbits. Group 1 had two Kirschner wire fixation after osteotomy and anatomic reduction. Group 2 had no fixation after osteotomy. The uptake ratio of Tc-99m-MDP of the femoral head in each group were measured st the intervals of 24 hours, 48 hours, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks, respectively. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. In experimental group 1, the mean uptake ratio of the femoral head was 0.72±0.13 at 1 day after operation, increased to a level of 1.44±0.14 at 1 week, increased to a maximal value of 2. 90±0.36 at 3 weeks and decreased to a level of 1.10+0.12 at 4 weeks. 2. In experimental group 2, the mean uptake ratio of the femoral head was 0.70±0.10 at 1 day, 0.64±0.13 at 1 week, decreased to a maximal value of 0.33±0.05 at 3 weeks and 0.47±0.05 at 4 weeks, showing decreased level below 1.0. The results suggest that early anatomicsl reduction and rigid fixation of femoral neck fracture is helpful for revascularization of the femoral head and prevention of non union.

Korean Journal of Medical Education 2016;28(2):231-235
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to find what medical students think the reward for their future work should be and whether they would keep their ideals or abandon them for prestige and wealth by analyzing the book reports of Cronin's The Citadel. METHODS: Participants were 50 medical students of junior class. A month before the classroom lecture, the book and digital video disk were provided. Students had discussions in groups of seven and wrote book reports which include answers of three questions. RESULTS: Regarding what should be the reward for the medical doctor, two-thirds of students (66.7%) answered with spiritual compensation, while one-third (33.3%) chose material reward. In the situation presented to Manson, three-fifths (60.0%) answered they would keep their ideals (idealist), while the remaining two-fifths (40.0%) decided they would abandon them. Less than one-third of students (30.0%) answered they would reveal the corruptions of the doctor's society, while two-thirds (64.0%) would not. CONCLUSION: The larger number of idealists who prefer spiritual reward rather than a material reward represents the innocence of youth as in portrayed in The Citadel.
