Korean Journal of Urology 1982;23(3):327-333
A clinical observation was made on 121 cases of urinary tract tuberculosis in the Department of Urology Hanyang University Hospital during the 8 year period from May, 1972 to April, 1980. The following results were obtained: 1. The incidence of urinary tract tuberculosis was 5.7% of total in-patients and the proportion of male to female was 1.7:1. 2. 34.4% were affected in the right kidney, 34.2% in the left and 31.4% in both. 3. Age and sex distribution showed that 33.9% were from 20 to 29 years old, 27.3% from 30 to 39 and 17.4% from 40 to 49. Regarding the sex, 76 cases (62.8%) were male and 45 cases (37.2%) were female. 4. Initial symptoms were mostly those of vesical irritable symptoms and hematuria (25.6%). 5. From past history 17.4% had pulmonary tuberculosis or pleurisy, 4.1% had tuberculous epididymitis, and 2.5% bone tuberculosis. 6. 25.6% of the cases visited the hospital within 1 month to 6 months after the onset of symptoms. 7. Other presenting active tuberculous lesions were pulmonary (14 cases), bony (3 cases) and lymphatic (1 case). 8. Ordinary urine cultures revealed mixed infection in 12 cases (15.2%), 4 cases of these 12 cases also had E. coli (5.1%). 9. A.F.B. was found in 67.5%. The total of all negative cases by the staining and culture method was 18.2%. 10. On cystoscopic findings 29 of 85 cases (34.1%) revealed a contracted bladder, but 5 cases (5.9%) showed normal finding. 11. Excretory urography showed calyceopelvic dilatation in 20.7% of cases, non-visualization in 19.3%, hydroureteronephrosis in 14.5%, contracted bladder in 12.4%, calcification in 7.6% and most cases had multiple changes in the kidneys. 12. Urographic findings based on the Lattimer classification showed far advanced tuberculous lesions in almost all cases. 13. Operative procedures were simple nephrectomy in 32 cases (69.6%), ureteroneocystostomy in 6.5% and ileocystoplasty with ureteroneocystostomy in 4.3% of 46 cases.

Korean Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery 2003;46(2):131-133
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Plastic surgeons have generally avoided performing rhinoplasty in the presence of rhinosinusitis due to potential infection. For the otolaryngologist, concurrent rhinoplasty can produce increased periorbital swelling and ecchymosis, which can obscure the parameters used to monitor complications of the sinus procedure. But recent advances of endoscopic sinus surgery have made the simultaneous procedures safe in appropriately selected patient. The purpose of this report is to identify the indications and limitations of the simultaneous procedures. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Seven patients were treated by this combined modality and all were available for follow-up. There were 3 women and 4 men with a mean age of 35 years who underwent the combined procedure by the otolaryngologist. RESULTS: Recurrence of sinusitis occurred in one patient, and another patient wanted revision rhinoplasty for cosmetic dissatisfaction. There were no other complications. CONCLUSION: Combined rhinoplasty and endoscopic sinus surgery can be performed safely and with good results in selected patients.

Mycobiology 2023;51(4):216-229
Acarosporaceae is a crustose lichen and is known as a species that has more than 50 multispores, and has hyaline spores. Those taxa are often found in rock and soil in mountain areas or coastal regions in Korea, and very diverse forms and species are known. However, after an overall genetic phylogenetic analysis of carbonized ascomata in 2015, species consisting only of the morphological base are newly divided, and several species of Acarosporaceae in Korea are also being discovered in this situation. As a result of analysis using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and nuLSU gene analysis, Korean species belonged to Acarospora and Sarcogyne clade, and i>Acarospora classified as the Acarospora clade was mixed with the Polysporina group and the Sarcogyne clade is mixed with the Acarospora. We identified two new species (Acarospora beangnokdamensis J. S. Park & S. O. Oh, sp. nov., Sarcogyne jejuensis J. S. Park & S. O. Oh, sp. nov.) through morphological, molecular, and secondary metabolite substance and found one new record (Sarcogyne oceanica K. Knudsen & Kocourk). We have made a classification key forAcarospora and Sarcogyne in Korea and reported all information together here.

PURPOSE: To compare the CT findings of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) immediately after radiofrequency (RF) ablation with those obtained at six months' follow-up, to analyse the relationship between degree of shrinkage of a necrotic lesion and marginal recurrence, and to evaluate the factors influencing shrinkage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 54 patients with 62 HCCs who underwent only RF ablation between May 1999 and July 2000. For six months after ablation, all had been free from marginal recurrence ad new-growth tumors. The findings of six-month follow-up CT were compared with those obtained immediately after RF ablation, and the volume of each necrotic lesion was calculated and compared. In terms of degree of shrinkage, tumors were classified as belonging to either group I (below 50%), group II (50-80%) or group III (above 80%). Each tumor was analysed in terms of its Child-Pugh classification, vascularity at CT, size, treatment details, the post-ablation appearance of its margins, and the presence, during necrosis, of peritumoral vessles and air bubbles. For statistical evaluation, Fisher's exact test was used. Shrinkage after ablationwas correlated to marginal recurrence during a period of more than one year. RESULTS: The Follow-up CT at six months showed that since immediately after ablation, necrotic lesions had shrunk by an average of 72%. Peritumoral vessels were seen in 12 of 14 cases in group I (86%), three of 13 in cases of group II (23%), and 11 of 35 in group III (31%)(p=0.001). Immediate CT revealed the presence of air bubbles in two cases in group I (14%), five in group II (38%), and 24 in group III (69%)(p<0.05). At follow-up CT performed during a period of more than one year, marginal recurrence was noted in four cases in group I, two in group II and two in group III (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: When a necrotic lesion contains no peritumoral vessels but does contain air bubbles, the degree of post-RFablation shrinkage increases. The greater the shrinkage, the less the marginal recurrence rate.

The Tian Shan mountain system is one of the large mountain ranges located in Central Asia. This region is globally recognized as mountain ranges, offering inestimable wealth in fauna and flora with significant biodiversity values. We surveyed macrofungal diversity of Tian Shan in Kyrgyzstan from 2016 to 2018. A collection of macrofungi was made, and these were subjected to sequence comparisons and phylogenetic analysis to ensure the identity of the collected macrofungi. Of those collected, 95 out of 100 specimens were successfully sequenced and compared with those of other related species retrieved from GenBank. The sequenced specimens were classified into 2 phyla, 8 orders, 24 families, 47 genera, and 57 species, based on current taxonomic concepts (combining morphology and phylogeny). To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the first well-documented checklist and phylogenetic analysis of macrofungi recovered from the Tian Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan.

The diversity of the genus Megacollybia in Korea was examined based on morphological observation and analysis of molecular data. Currently, the genus is consisted of nine species with a global distribution. However, only M. platyphylla has been reported in the floral survey of Korea. During our re-evaluation of the taxonomic diversity of Megacollybia in Korea, six Megacollybia specimens collected in 2012 were identified based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences and morphology. Here, we report two Megacollybia species, M. clitocyboidea and M. marginata, as newly recorded species from Korea. The microscopic features of the two species are provided in this study. To our knowledge, this is the first phylogenetic analysis of Korean Megacollybia species.

During the 2014 survey of the mushroom flora of Gwangneung forest in South Korea, we collected two specimens of boletoid mushroom growing on a felled tree of Pinus koraiensis. These specimens were characterized by a light brown to reddish-brown pileus with appressed tomentum, pore surface bluing instantly when bruised, golden-yellow mycelium at the base of stipe, and lignicolous habitat. Both specimens were identified as Buchwaldoboletus lignicola, a rare basidiomycete, based on morphological characteristics and sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS; fungal barcode). Here, we describe these specimens and provide the first report of this genus in South Korea.

BACKGROUNDS/AIMS: The diagnosis for cystic neoplasm of pancreas is based on the morphologic criteria through imaging studies, but the pre- and postoperative diagnoses are often inconsistent. This study aims at the analysis of clinical characteristics and the results of surgical treatments. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on 93 patients who have undergone surgery for pancreatic cystic diseases in our hospital from January 2001 to February 2013. Among them, 69 patients were confirmed as cystic neoplasms based on pathologic findings. Their clinical manifestations, diagnostic accuracy, surgical method and complications, pathologic findings were analyzed. RESULTS: Serous cystic neoplasm was the most common (n=22), followed by mucinous cystic neoplasm (n=18), intraductal papillary mucinous tumor (n=11), solid pseudopapillary tumor (n=9), neuroendocrine tumor (n=7), and cystic lymphangioma (n=2). The most common clinical symptom is abdominal pains (49.3%). Preoperative imaging studies were consistent with pathological findings in 72% of patients. Cystic fluid CEA levels of 400 ng/ml or more were reliable to detect mucin secreting tumors. Pancreatoduodenectomy was performed for 13 cases and the remaining 54 patients were treated with left-side pancreatectomy. Malignancy was found in 9 cases (13%) of mucin secreting tumors; 5 cases (27.8%) in mucinous cystic neoplasm and 4 cases (36.4%) in intraductal papillary mucinous tumor. Two of these survived without recurrences during the follow-up periods. CONCLUSIONS: Exact treatment protocols for cystic neoplasm of pancreas are not decided because tumors are found with atypical forms. Surgical management is suggested for resectable tumors because a good prognosis can be expected with proper surgery if precancerous lesions are suspected at the time of discovery.
