OBJECTIVETo observe the therapeutic efficacy of Danggui Buxue Decoction No.1 in treating patients of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at the peri-operational stage and its impact on the patients' immune function.
METHODSEighty-two NSCLC patients were randomly assigned to two groups equally, the control group and the test group, they were given conventional treatment, while to the test group, DB1 were given additionally. The observation was conducted by testing the changes of T-lymphocyte subsets, natural killer (NK) cell activity, serum levels of immunoglobulin (IgA, IgM, IgG), interleukin-2 (IL-2), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), cytokeratin fragment 19 (CYFRA21-1) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in NSCLC patients before and after administration of DB1, and analyzing the patients' general condition.
RESULTSThe level of CD3(+), CD4(+), the ratio of CD4 and CD8(+), IgA, IgM, IgG and IL-2 decreased in patients with NSCLC on day 1 after operation, and the level of CD8 and TNF-alpha increased compared to pre-operation. While the levels of CD3(+), CD4(+), CD4 /CD8(+), NK cell activity, serum IgA, IgM, IgG, IL-2 began to elevate, CD8 and TNF-alpha levels began to decline in patients administered with DB1 on day 3 after the operation, earlier than patients who did not use the decoction. The level of CYFRA21-1 and CEA, was immediately decreased after operation in both groups.
CONCLUSIONSApplying DB1 to NSCLC patients at an early post-operational stage could alleviate the impairment and accelerate the recovery of immune function of patients to enhance their immunity. DB1 also shows an anti-tumor action to a certain degree.

OBJECTIVETo analyse the distribution, drug resistance and epidemiology of pathogenic bacteria in the burn wards of Ruijin Hospital.
METHODSSeventeen strains of Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), 52 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), and 11 strains of Acinetobacter baumannii (AB) isolated from the wound secretion, venous catheters, blood, urine and stool etc. were collected from burn patients hospitalized in our department from January 2004 to December 2006. The distribution and the drug resistance profile of bacteria were analyzed, and the homology analysis was performed by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD).
RESULTSMRSA, PA and AB were the major strains in our burn wards in recent years, of which Staphylococcus aureus (SA) was the most dominant. During these 3 years, MRSA accounted for 77% (63/82), 85% (63/74), and 75% (74/99), respectively, for SA isolated in this period. MRSA was resistant to Amikacin, Gentamicin, Erythromycin, Clindamycin and Levofloxacin; PA was resistant to Amikacin, Gentamicin, Piperacillin, Ceftazidime, Cefoperazone, Aztreonam and Imipenem; AB was resistant to Amikacin, Gentamicin, Piperacillin, Ceftazidime, Imipenem and Ciprofloxacin. Three bacteria were found to belong to the same type in the RAPD homology analysis.
CONCLUSIONSThere are many kind of multi-drug resistant pathogenic bacteria for nosocomial infection in our burn wards. To control the spread of infection due to above-mentioned 3 bacteria is the focus of nosocomial infection control.

AIMTo investigate the effect of chronic lead exposure on rat hippocampal CA1 LTP and alpha-Ca2+ /calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (alpha-CaM K II) activity in vivo.
METHODSA stimulus bipolar electrode was placed on the Schaffer/Commissural fibers, with extra cellular microelectrode technique to record the population spike (PS) in the CA1 pyramidal, and we observed the changes of PS amplitude before and after the high frequency stimulation (HFS) of lower, mid and higher level lead exposure groups and the control group, respectively. The hippocampal CA1 alpha-CaM K II activity was determined by Western blots by using phosphorylation antibody.
RESULTSThe average changes of PS after HFS of the control group, the lower, mid and higher level lead exposure groups were 162.5%, 105.2%, 86.8%, 83.0%, respectively (P < 0.01 vs. control). Defined control a-CaM K II activity as 100, that the lower, mid and higher level lead exposure groups were 62.0 +/- 3.7, 50.8 +/- 4.0, 43.3 +/- 4.1 (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONChronic lead exposure can inhibit CA1 LTP in vivo, and the decrease of alpha-CaMK II activity may play an important role in this mechanism.

Chinese Journal of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2010;45(12):1020-1024
Objective To analyse the prognostic factors and the neck treatment strategy of early tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Methods Total of 152 cases of early tongue SCC underwent surgery between January 1994 December 2003 were reviewed. The patients, according to their neck managements, were divided into two groups, or wait-whach group (n = 32) and neck dissection group (n =120) ,and the neck dissection group was subdivided into supraomohyoid neck dissection (SND) group and comprehensive neck dissection(CND) group (including radical neck dissection and modified radical neck disssection). Results All patients were followed up over 5 years or until death and the 5-year follow-up rate was 94. 7%. The regional recurrence rates of wait-whach group and neck dissection group were 34. 4% and 14. 2% respectively (χ2 = 6. 865, P < 0. 01) and 5-year overall survival rates of the two groups were 68% and 79% respectively (χ2 = 1. 699, P > 0. 05). There were no significant difference in the regional recurrence rate or 5-year survival rate between SND group and CND group (P > 0. 05). The patients with pathologically node positive had a low 5-year survival rate compared to those with node negative. The patients with regional recurrence had a significant low 5-year survival rate compared to patients without regional recurrence (P<0.01). Conclusions Occult lymph node metastasis and regional recurrence were important prognostic factors for early tongue cancer. Supraomohyoid neck dissection can not improve the 5-year survival rate, but significantly reduce the rate of neck recurrence. The results suggest that the selective neck dissection for ipsilateral level Ⅰ - Ⅲ should be applied to the patients with early tongue carcinoma which does not cross the midline.
