Herpes simplex virus (Herpesvirus hominis), a member of the herpeptoviridae family, is among the most common infectious viral pathogens in humans. Types of HSV can be subdivided into HSV-1 and HSV-2 on the basis of physiological, serologic and epidemiologic differences, although both are closely related immunologically and DNA sequence homology. HSV-1 is frequently associated with oropharyngeal, eye and skin infections, while HSV-2 is most commonly associated with genital tract infections. Characteristically after the primary infection, HSV can be linked to latency in neural tissue. Reactivation of HSV can be triggered by sunburn, fever, stress, menstruation and local trauma. Here we report a case of reactivation of herpes simplex virus type 2 in foot dorsum followed by repetitive friction due to Sandals' trap.

BACKGROUND: Skin lesions and pain are the most distinctive features of herpes zoster. Light-emitting diode (LED) therapy is an effective treatment known for its wound-healing effects. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the LED treatment affects wound healing and acute pain in acute herpes zoster ophthalmicus. METHODS: We recruited 28 consecutive Korean patients with acute herpes zoster ophthalmicus for the study. In the control group (group A), 14 subjects received oral famcyclovir. In the experimental group (group B), 14 subjects received oral famcyclovir and 830 nm LED phototherapy on days 0, 4, 7, and 10. In order to estimate the time for wound healing, we measured the duration from the vesicle formation to when the lesion crust fell off. The visual analogue scale (VAS) was used for the estimation of pain on days 4, 7, 10, and 14. RESULTS: The mean time required for wound healing was 13.14+/-2.34 days in group B and 15.92+/-2.55 days in group A (p=0.006). From day 4, the mean VAS score showed a greater improvement in group B, compared with group A. A marginal but not statistically significant difference in the VAS scores was observed between the two groups (p=0.095). CONCLUSION: LED treatment for acute herpes zoster ophthalmicus leads to faster wound healing and a lower pain score.

Steatocystoma Multiplex

Common blue nevi are solitary, asymptomatic blue-gray, or blue-black papules, usually less than 10 mm in diameter. Rarely, lesions may be multiple and agminated or arranged in large plaques. Common blue nevi may occur anywhere, but about half the reported cases present on the dorsa of hands and feet, whereas the plaque-type blue nevi occur mainly on the trunk and extremities. Histopathologically, the plaque-type blue nevi are reported to be common or cellular. We report a rare case of plaque-type blue nevus on the right temporal area in a 32-year-old female.

Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by at least one rare sebaceous neoplasm occurring in association with at least one internal malignancy. The visceral neoplasms most frequently associated with MTS are colorectal and genitourinary cancer, accounting for approximately 50 and 25% of cases, respectively. MTS rarely occurs in association with head and neck cancers. We report a rare case of MTS involving follicular thyroid carcinoma in an 84-year-old female.
