3.The Effect of Serum Carotenoids on Atrophic Gastritis Among the Inhabitants of a Rural Area in Hokkaido, Japan
Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine 2001;6(3):184-188
A total of 206 residents (76 males and 130 females) of a rural area of Hokkaido, Japan, attending a health check in August, 1997, were studied to assess the relationship between serum carotenoids and atrophic gastritis (AG). Of the participants, 91 had AG, as indicated by their serum levels of pepsinogen I and pepsinogen II. Logistic regression analysis, after adjusting for gender and age, revealed that the odds ratios for serum carotenoid levels were lower for subjects with high serum levels of α-carotene (odds ratio, 0.41; 95% C.I., 0.19−0.88) and β-carotene (odds ratio, 0.41; 95% C.I., 0.18−0.91) than for those with low serum carotenoid levels. In addition, the odds ratios of subjects with high serum levels of β-cryptoxanthin (odds ratio, 0.60; 95% C.I., 0.28−1.31), provitamin A (odds ratio, 0.38; 95% C.I., 0.17−0.85), and retinol (odds ratio, 0.67; 95% C.I., 0.31−1.48) were found to be lower than the odds ratios for those with low serum levels. Odds ratios for subjects with high serum zeaxanthin/lutein levels were higher than odds ratios for those with low serum levels. These results suggest that frequent intake of foods rich in carotenoids with provitamin A activity may reduce the risk of AG.

Japanese Journal of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine 1992;41(1):79-88
In order to prevent sports anemia, caused especially by iron deficiency or shortage, a special type of food supplementation was designed. This was called“iron-food”and contained 510% of the therapeutic iron dose. According to hemoglobin (Hb) values, female subjects who had been performing hard daily training were divided into two groups ; an anemia group (A group, Hb≤11.9 g/dl, n=4) and a potential anemia group (PA group, 12.0≤Hb≤12.9g/dl, n=4) . Then the iron-food was administered for six weeks following placebo treatment. Iron status, hematological profiles and aerobic work capacity of the two groups were examined before and after the two periods to investigate the effect of the iron-food. Serum iron, iron saturation and ferritin were significantly increased in the PA group. Serum iron tended to be increased in the A group, but not significantly. Red blood cell count, Hb and hematocrit were significantly increased in the PA group, and the reticulocyte count was also increased in the A group. These results suggest that iron-food helped to increase daily iron intake in the anemic subjects, but not to a sufficient extent to aid recovery from anemia. However the ironfood was effective for improving iron status in subjects with potential anemia (latent iron deficiency) .

We executed an acupuncture therapy to 62 lumbar spinal canal stenosis cases who were diagnosed by CT, MRI photo state and clinical symptom and examined the result.
The 36 men and 26 women in this study had a mean age of 67.3 years.
An acupuncture was executed by aiming to give an effect to the soft tissues and a blood circulation around the area where the stenosis was recognized then pierced facet joint closely and deeply and gave an electric acupuncture stimulus.
14 cases were very good and 17 cases had good results according to the JOA score. No cases worsened.
We concluded an acupuncture treatment was effective for treating lumbar spinal canal stenosis.

We report a case of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) accompanied by steroid-induced avascular necrosis of the femoral head in a 68-year-old woman. Extremely low platelet counts of ITP patients prohibit any surgical interventions. Her platelet count was 25,000/μL. We performed a total hip arthroplasty with high-dose immunoglobulin therapy and transfusion of platelet concentrates. Her platelet count increased to 94,000/μL just before the operation. No hemostatic complications were encountered perioperatively, and the postoperative course was uneventful. She left the hospital 20 days after the operation with a T-cane. Her platelet count decreased to 34,000/μL on the day she left the hospital. Three years after the operation, she had no groin pain and could walk without ambulatory assistive devices. We did not observe implant loosening.

PURPOSE : The purpose of this study is to compare sagittal spinal alignment and mobility among standing and sitting (which are fundamental postures in daily activities), and four point kneeling (FPK: the imitation of quadrupedal animal posture).METHODS : Fifty three healthy young men have participated in this study. Spinal alignment is measured using a non-invasive skin surface measurement device (Spinal Mouse®: Index Ltd, Japan). The spinal alignment is measured in 3 positions: upright, flexion, and extension, in each posture (standing, sitting, and FPK), and then the thoracic and lumbar curvature and sacral slope are analyzed.RESULTS : Even between 2 fundamental positions, upright standing and sitting, the lumbar lordosis is statistically different (17.1±8.9° at upright standing, 3.5±10.0° at upright sitting, p<0.001). But the sacral slope is not different between those 2 positions. The lumbo-pelvic rhythm (lumbar-hip or lumbar-pelvis flexion ratio) is also different among the 3 postures, especially in FPK posture. In this posture the lumbar spine and pelvis (sacrum) move to opposite direction each other; this phenomenon is not observed at standing and sitting postures. CONCLUSION : The spinal alignment and mobility are different in many segments among standing, sitting, and FPK.

Objective: The sports community has placed its great hope on pharmacist since the establishment of the Accredited Sports Pharmacist System. Thus, we constructed an anti-doping database for pharmacist so that pharmacist can support appropriate drug use and contribute to the sports community.
Methods: The database was constructed by using Microsoft®Access 2007, based on our previously prepared anti-doping list.
Results: 686 prescription drugs and 268 ingredients for non-prescription drug were registered in the data base. It was able to retrieve the advisability of use for athlete, blood half-life and the other notes of the drugs easily and promptly.
Conclusion: We confirm that pharmacist can provide drug information easily, promptly and from the viewpoint of pharmaceutics by utilizing the database including necessary information for anti-doping.

To clarify the experience in clinical practice of students at Osaka University Medical School, a questionnaire survey was performed according to the International Classification of Primary Care. More than half of the students had observed only 6 of the 23 reasons for seeking primary care such as headache and hypertension but had not experienced 17 of the 23 reasons, such as cough and abdominal pain. Most students had observed malignancy and chronic diseases, but more than half had only knowledge of 54 of 105 diseases such as appendicitis. In conclusion, medical students' experiences in clinical practice are not well balanced.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the body characteristics of university soccer players, especially the hip joint and pelvis where chronic injuries frequently occur among soccer players.
Body characteristics of seventy male university soccer players were surveyed by an orthopedic medical check. The Micro FET value (MF) was used as the unique test for the potential stress on the pubic symphysis. MF was defined as the pressure value at which a subject claimed tenderness from compression on the pubic symphysis.
Among the various tests of the orthopedic medical check, trunk extension in the prone position and external rotation of the hip joint in the standing position correlated with MF. The same tendencies were observed in soccer players with pubic symphysitis.
Results indicate that these three simple tests : MF, trunk extension in the prone position and external rotation of the hip joint in the standing position, can be used as valuable indices for detecting pubic symphysitis in the early stages.
