However, the rate of knee joint degeneration in women was higher than this in men while the rate of hip joint degeneration in men was higher than this in women. The principles of the treatment comprised the reduction of process of joint damage, especially prevention of the articulate cartilage degeneration and pain relief, maintenance of the moving ability and minimization of the handicap

Objectives: 1) To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) into Filipino; 2) To validate the Filipino translation of KOOS using the Filipino Short-Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) among patients with knee osteoarthritis (kOA) at a tertiary hospital. Methodology: A Filipino version of the KOOS was translated and cross-culturally adapted from the original English version and validated following standard guidelines. Adult Fiipino patients with knee osteoarthritis at the University of the Phiippines-Philippine General Hospital were asked to complete identical questionnaires containing the Filipino KOOS and Filipino SF-36, with re-test on the same patients after a median of 14 days. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC); dimensionality using convergent and divergent construct validity. Results: The Filipino translation of the KOOS was administered to 30 patients with knee OA (kOA). Cronbach's α across the Filipino KOOS domains ranged from 0.71 to 0.89 suggesting good internal consistency. The reproducibility of measurements of all KOOS subscales by ICC ranged from 0.97 to 1.0. For convergent construct validity, there was moderate correlation between KOOS ADL (0.38, p =0.03) and knee-related QoL (0.42, p=0.02) by SF-36 Physical Functioning (PF). A strong correlation (0.51, p=0.003) was observed between KOOS sports and recreation domain with SF-36 PF. For divergent construct validity, there was weak correlation between KOOS pain (0.015, p=0.93) and symptoms (0.15, p=0.42) with SF 36 Social Functioning. Conclusion The Filipino version of the KOOS is a valid and reliable instrument to measure the different aspects of disability affecting quality of life of Filipino patients with kOA.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury remains a common orthopedic case, especially in young adults with an active lifestyle. Activities of daily living and sports performance may be vastly compromised; thus, immediate diagnosis is essential. The researchers tested the diagnostic ability of the anterior tibial translocation sign (using the 5 mm cut-off) against the gold standard knee arthroscopy using cross-sectional study design. Analysis of the 23 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans showed a sensitivity of 42.9% (true positives: 6 had ≥5 mm reading out of 14 positive arthroscopy fi ndings), specifi city of 77.8% (true negatives: 7 had <5 mm reading out of 9 negative arthroscopy fi ndings) and positive predictive value (PPV) of 75.0% (6 out of 8 positive arthroscopy fi ndings among ≥5 mm). In the sample data, 7 mm cut-off had the optimal trade-off between sensitivity and type I error, thus being the most predictive of ACL tear.

Atrophy of thigh muscles always appears when a knee is injured, especially if the injured knee has to be immobilized for a long time. In general, both doctors and patients can find out about atrophy and inccrease fitness of muscles is very important to bring patients and athletes to their works, sport training or performance. At the Vietnam Sport Medicine Center, we are applying the Isokinetic method to help patients reduce rehab duration. Our research: “Recover the fitness of quadriceps on the Isokinetic systems to atrophy cases after knee injuries” show that thigh fitness can fully recover within 6 to 14 days provided that Isokinetic recovery program is applied.

Meniscus tear is one of the most common knee injuries. The increasing recognition of the importance of the meniscal function has led to a range of new treatments for meniscal tears. A complete radial tear disrupts the circumferential hoop tension of the meniscus. Therefore, restoring its natural architecture is of utmost importance. However, it is difficult to achieve meniscal healing of a complete radial tear due to its structural characteristics. We report five cases of a complete radial tear of the lateral meniscus treated successfully using a fibrin clot that showed good meniscal healing and excellent clinical outcomes.

Discoid medial meniscus was first reported in l930 by Watson-Jones. Discoid medial menisci are very rarely reported although the presence of discoid lateral menisci are not uncommon. From Jan. 1989 to Dec. 1994, we have experienced five cases who had discoid medial menisci with pain due to substance tear following knee injury in arthroscopy. There were three complete type anct two incomplete type. Out of flve cases, longitudinal tea1 and bucket-handle type tear were two, respectively. The remained one was a compound tear.

Popliteal meniscal fiber bundle injury is relatively infrequent in clinic, which can be either isolated or associated with anterior cruciate ligament rupture, lateral meniscus injury and so on. Popliteal meniscal fiber bundle injury often leads to instability of lateral meniscus. Because of the lack of specific symptoms and signs of injury, the imaging changes are subtle, and it is easy to miss diagnosis and misdiagnosis in clinical. Timely diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent the chronic pain and instability of the knee joint. This paper summarizes the anatomical characteristics, biomechanics, injury mechanism, diagnostic points and surgical treatment of the popliteal meniscus fiber bundle injury, in order to guide the diagnosis and treatment of the injury of the popliteal meniscus fiber bundle in the clinical work.
