Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors of oral environment and self-care behavior on the oral health-related quality of life in the elderly with diabetes. Methods: The participants were 110 elderly patients with diabetes and follow-up care on their outpatient clinic in D and G city. Data were collected September-December 2018, using questionnaires of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-49) and Kim’s Self-care Behavior, measuring with the tooth-pick (Premiers Dental), Halitosis Checker (HC-212M), and Moisture Checker for Mucus (MCM) for oral environments. The data were analyzed the by independent t-test, oneway ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and stepwise multiple regression analysis using an IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 Program. Results: There was positive correlation between oral health-related quality of life and self-care behavior (r= .61, p< .001), negative correlations among halitosis (r = -.34, p < .001), gingival index (r = -.31, p = .001) and plaque index (r = -.32, p = .001). Self-care behavior (β= .46, p< .001), subjective health status (good) (β= .23, p= .002), halitosis (β= -.16, p= .030), and plaque index (β= -.15, p= .041) explained 46.0% of the variance in the oral health-related quality of life. Conclusion It is necessary to develop nursing care for elderly patients with diabetes that can enhance the self-care behavior and subjective health status, and lower halitosis and plaque index, the factors influencing the oral health-related quality of life in elderly patients with diabetes.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify relationships between compassion fatigue, burnout, and turnover intention in Korean hospital nurses. METHODS: In total, 142 hospital nurses were surveyed as part of data collection. Data related to compassion fatigue, burnout, and turnover intention were collected using a questionnaire between May 2011 and September 2011. The data analysis was performed using PASW 19.0 program, which included one-way ANOVA, independent t-tests, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression analysis. RESULTS: This study detected a positive correlation between compassion fatigue and burnout(r=.37, p<.001), and turnover intention(r=.55, p<.001). Compassion fatigue accounted for 29.6% of the variance for turnover intention among Korean hospital nurses. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that it is necessary to reduce compassion fatigue, and turnover intention among Korean hospital nurses.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of social support, self - esteem, hope, and health conservation of the vulnerable elderly people with diabetes. METHODS: Participants were 100 vulnerable elderly people with diabetes living in D or K cities. Data collection was done through interviews from February to March, 2016. Social support was measured with the MOS-SSS (Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey), self-esteem with Self-Esteem Scale, hope with the Nowotny Hope Scale, and health conservation with the Sung's Health Conservation Scale. IBM SPSS 20.0 was used to analyze descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. RESULTS: Factors affecting the health conservation of the vulnerable elderly people were social support, hope, education level and subjective health status. These factors explained 64.9% of the health conservation. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to construct a comprehensive nursing classification system for elderly people with diabetes in vulnerable class and to develop integrated health conservation program and nursing care as a new social support resource.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to analyze the subjectivity of wisdom in the Korean elderly. METHODS: Q-methodology was used. The 33 selected Q-statements from each of the 41 participants were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 9-point scale. The collected data were analyzed using the Analysis Software for Q-Technique. RESULTS: Four types of wisdom for research participants of Korean elderly were identified. Type I is experience-oriented action type; Type II is emotion-oriented sympathy type; Type III is human relationship-oriented consideration type; and Type IV is problem solution-oriented insight type. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that different approaches to health and nursing care for elders can be recommended based on the four types studied.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of peer mentoring program on physical activity, knee joint function, self-care agency and social support, which are health conservation elements in elderly women with osteoarthritis. METHODS: This study used a quasi-experimental research design. It is a pretest-and-post 1, post 2 test design of a non-equivalent control group. The subjects were elderly women aged over 65 who were diagnosed with osteoarthritis. A total of 60 patients (experimental group 30, control group 30) who registered with the Senior Welfare Center in City G and in Region D participated in this study. The data were collected from June 29th to September 4th, 2015. The collected data were analyzed with χ² test, Fisher's exact test, independent t-test and repeated measurement ANOVA. RESULTS: The experimental group showed a greater increase in physical activity, knee joint function, self-care agency and social support than the control group. CONCLUSION: The results indicated that the peer mentoring program is effective in increasing physical activity, knee joint function, self-care agency and social support of elderly women with osteoarthritis.

PURPOSE: This study was performed in order to identify the relationships among self-care behavior, health conservation, and cardiovascular risk factors and to examine the influence of self-care behavior and health conservation on cardiovascular risk factors among Korean elders with diabetes mellitus. METHODS: The participants were 105 elders with diabetes mellitus using senior welfare centers and elderly leisure houses in Daegu. Data were collected through interviews during the period from April to May in 2014. Self-care behavior was measured with Kim's (1997) Self-care Behavior Scale, health conservation with Sung's (2005) Health Conservation Scale, and cardiovascular risk factors with the Arizona Heart Institute Cardiovascular Risk Factor Questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed through one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression using the SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. RESULTS: A negative correlation was found between self-care behavior and cardiovascular risk factors, and between health conservation and cardiovascular risk factors. Self-care behavior explained 6% and health conservation did 49% of variance in elderly diabetes mellitus patients' cardiovascular risk. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that, in order to reduce cardiovascular risk factors among Korean elders with diabetes mellitus, we need nursing interventions for increasing health conservation and self-care behavior.

PURPOSE: An increasing elderly population reflects a great need for readily accessible, clinically useful methods to identify mortality-related factors in nursing home residents. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with the deaths of nursing home residents. METHODS: Data was collected from a Minimal Data Set of 195 elderly nursing home residents, followed by analysis of demographic factors, disease and nursing condition factors, Activities of Daily Living (ADL), cognitive function, behavioral patterns, and dysfunctional status. RESULTS: Major factors associated with death among nursing home residents were identified as dyspnea (odds ratio [OR] = 4.88), problematic behaviors (OR = 3.95), and ADL (OR = 3.61). These variables accounted for 31.1% of the variance in death. CONCLUSION: Dyspnea, problematic behaviors, and ADL data were identified as the key factors associated with death among nursing home residents. Future plans for the prediction of death among nursing home residents can be made by nursing staff, factoring in these identified variables, to ensure more comfortable conditions and more responsive care.

PURPOSE: This study was done to identify the relationships among diabetic health leader attitude, diabetic knowledge, and health conservation in highly educated elders. METHODS: The participants were 119 elders aged 65 or more who were attending the senior welfare centers in D and K City and had at least a high school degree. Data were collected from June 10 to July 7 in 2013. Data analysis included one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression, done with the SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. RESULTS: A positive correlation was found among diabetic health leader attitude, diabetic knowledge, and health conservation. Health conservation explained 26% (beta=.31) and diabetic knowledge explained 2% (beta=.18) of the variance in diabetic health leader attitude. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that to increase diabetic health leader attitude among highly educated elders, health leader programs are needed for increasing their diabetic knowledge and health conservation.

PURPOSE: This study evaluates the efficacy of a Self-Care Reinforcement Program (SCRP) based on the Selection Optimization Compensation (SOC) model, in socially vulnerable elderly women with metabolic syndrome. METHODS: This study adopts a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. The participants were 64 socially vulnerable elderly Korean women with metabolic syndrome (experimental group: 31, control group: 33). Participants' body composition analysis, nutrient intake, risk factors of metabolic syndrome, depressive symptoms, and social network were measured. Data were analyzed with an independent t-test; statistical significance levels were set at p<.05. The SCRP, including metabolic syndrome education, nutritional education, exercise, and social network, was performed three times a week for 8 weeks. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups in terms of systolic blood pressure, diastolic pressure, fasting blood sugar, triglycerides, sodium intake, depressive symptoms, and social networks. CONCLUSION: The SCRP is effective and can be recommended as a community health nursing intervention for socially vulnerable elderly women with metabolic syndrome.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify influencing factors of metabolic index and cardiovascular risk factors, on depressive and non-depressive groups, in vulnerable diabetic elderly women. METHODS: Participants were 137 vulnerable diabetic elderly women, using health centers in D city. Data were collected through interviews September though December 2017. The metabolic index was measured using National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III), and cardiovascular risk factors were measured using Framingham Risk Score (FRS). Depressive and non-depressive groups were divided by the score of Geriartric Depress Scale Short Korea Version (GDSSF). Collected data were analyzed using a x2 test, independent t-test, and binary logistic regression, with the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. RESULTS: Vulnerable diabetic elderly women, did not exercise in the depressive groups, and had higher triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC) and larger waists, than in the non-depressive group. Results show that lack of exercise (OR=6.30), is the highest risk factor, influencing the depressive symptom in vulnerable diabetic elderly women. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that to reduce depressive symptom levels among vulnerable diabetic elderly women, nursing interventions are needed to increase exercise and decrease TG, TC, and waist size, particularly in improving exercise of vulnerable diabetic elderly women.
