As the meat of black goats has become popular as a healthy food, domestic goat meat-related industries are steadily growing. However, previous studies are scarce of informations about the zoonotic disease originated from the black goat in Korea. In this study, we investigated Korean black goat's infectious diseases representing bovine tuberculosis, brucellosis, and Q fever. One hundred and eighty samples were collected from a local slaughter house located in Jeollanam-do. Three typical zoonotic diseases were separately examined by carrying out enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Histopathological test was additionally performed in tuberculosis. In case of tuberculosis, results of the PCR and histopathological test were negative but the ELISA results were positive in eight samples. In case of brucellosis, one out of the total samples was shown to be positive in the ELISA and none in the PCR. In case of Q fever, there were forty one positive in the ELISA and twenty positive in the real-time PCR. Those results indicate that the Korean black goat could be a natural reservoir in the possible chain-infections among human, cows and goats. Thus, further study needs in order to improve productivity as well as to prevent the zoonosis spreading and circulation of other livestock with the black goat in this country.

Eighty-five Korean kidney transplant recipients who received three doses of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine were tested with anti-receptor binding domain (RBD) antibody and neutralizing antibody. High anti-RBD antibody (≥ 100 U/mL) and neutralizing antibody responses (≥ 30%) were detected in 51/85 (60.0%) patients.When we divided the patients with the time from transplantation to vaccination (< 1, 1–2.4, 2.5–4.9, and ≥ 5-year), anti-RBD antibody titers were 3.2 U/mL, 27.8 U/mL, 370.2 U/mL, and 5,094.2 U/mL (P < 0.001) and anti-neutralizing antibody levels were 2.2%, 11.6%, 45.6%, and 93.0% (P < 0.001), respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed increased antibody responses when the time from transplantation to vaccination was five years or longer (odds ratio, 12.0; confidence interval, 2.7–52.8). Korean kidney transplant recipients had suboptimal antibody responses after the third dose of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. A shorter time from transplantation to vaccination was a risk factor for a low antibody response.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the spectrum of hysteroscopic surgery to be extended. METHODS: Forty-three women who underwent hysteroscopic procedures with Urione(R) solution or normal saline as distension media between March 2001 and March 2009 were randomized. The clinical characteristics, laboratory data, and post-operative results were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: The following hysteroscopic procedures were performed: endometrial biopsy, 26; endometrial polypectomy, 8; myomectomy, 7; ablation for dysfunctional uterine bleeding and endometrial hyperplasia, 1; and excision of an endometrial mass, 1. The mean size of the myomas was 3.2 cm. The average duration of hospitalization was 2 days. The average change in hemoglobin was 1.1 g/dl. The mean operative time was 36 minutes. CONCLUSION: The indications for hysteroscopic procedures can be extended. Pure intramural myomas, submucosal myomas, endometrial polyps, adenomyosis, endometrial hyperplasia, hydrometra, and abnormal uterine bleeding can be treated via a hysteroscope. Intra-operative transabdominal ultrasonographic guidance can be helpful during hysteroscopic procedures, and reduces the complication and morbidity rates.

Guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) play multiple functional roles in neurons. In a previous study, we reported that Arhgef4 (Rho guanine nucleotide exchange factor 4) functioned as a negative regulator of the excitatory synaptic function by sequestering postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD-95). However, the role ofArhgef4 in behavior has not been examined. We performed comprehensive behavioral tests in knockout (KO) mice to investigate of the effects of Arhgef4 deficiency. We found that the expressed PSD-95 particle size was significantly increased in hippocampal neuronal cultures from Arhgef4 KO mice, which is consistent with the previous in vitro findings.Arhgef4 KO mice exhibited general motor activity and anxiety-like behavior comparable to those of the wild type littermates. However, spatial memory and object recognition memory were significantly enhanced in the Arhgef4 KO mice. Taken together, these data confirm the role of Arhgef4 as a negative synaptic regulator at the behavioral level.

OBJECTIVES: The overuse of the Internet among adolescents has increased dramatically in recent years, leading to pathological or problematic Internet use. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is known to be effective for the treatment of problematic Internet use, particularly for adolescents. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of group CBT for problematic Internet use in adolescents. METHODS: A total of 17 patients aged 12–17 years who met Young's diagnostic questionnaire criteria of problematic Internet use participated in a school-based eight-session group CBT program. The level of problematic Internet use among participating students was measured using Young's Internet Addiction Scale (IAS). Depression and anxiety levels were evaluated using the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), respectively. Each construct was assessed at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and at a one-month follow-up visit. Statistical significance was based on a p-value of < 0.05. RESULTS: Immediately after the program, the IAS, CDI, and State Anxiety Inventory (SAI) scores were significantly lower than before the program. At the one-month follow-up assessment, the IAS scores remained low, and the CDI and SAI scores were even lower than immediately after the program. CONCLUSION: Group CBT was effective for adolescents with problematic Internet use, and was also demonstrated to improve depression and anxiety.
