1.Differences in Systolic Time Intervals Attributable to the Type of Mechanocardiographs.

Differences in systolic time intervals(STI's) attributable to the types of mechanocardiographs used for their determinations were studied in a total of 341 healthy adult males. The STI's were measured from mechanocardiograms consisting of simultaneously rocorded electrocardiograms, phonocardiograms and carotid arterial pulse tracings obtained by each of three different types of mechanocardiographs in 125, 56 and 160 subjects, respectively. The study revealed that there were slight to considerabe differences among the three groups in the correlation coefficients between the individual STI's and heart rate. Thus, regression equations using heart rate as variables, for those STI's which were significantly correlated with heart rate, differed slightly to considerably among these groups. In addition, the mean values of those STI's and their derivatives, which showed no significant correlation with heart rate, were also silghtly or significantly different among the three groups. These findings suggest that if STI's obtained from patients are to be adequately evaluated at all, each laboratory must define its own normal standards worked out by using its own methods of recording and analysis of the mechanocardiogram, and cannot rely on those proposed by others.

4.Animal Experiments of Cutaneous Depigmentation by 4-Isoprophlcatechol and Hydroquinone.

The depigmenting activity of 4-isopropylcatechol and hydroquinone, and the behaviour of salicylic acid affecting to the activity were studied. To the hydrophilic ointment base, 4-isopropylcatechol and hydroquinone were incorperated respectively in concentrations of l% and 3%, and to these creams, salicylic acid was also added in concentration of 3% and 5% respectively. These creams were applied topically to the epilated skins of the back of black guinea pigs once a day for 3 weeks. Followings were the results: 1) The depigmenting activity was found to be more potent in 4-isopropylcatechol than in hydroquinone. 2) The depigmenting activity of hydroquinone was found to be remarkably accelerated by the addition of salicylic acid. 3) The skins of guinea pigs were found to be mildly irritated by the application of both 4-isopropylcatechol and hydroquinone.

7.Prevalence of Silent Otitis Media with effusion in Preschool Children in Kunsan city.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion(OME) is a very common disease in pediatric age. However, a few literatures on epidemiologic study of otitis media with effusion are available in Korea due to the great variability of its diagnostic criteria and clinical features. The aim of this study is to provide the estimate of silent otitis media prevalence for preschool age. METHODS: The study population includes 329 children enrolled in 6 kindergartens in Kunsan city from April 1 to 10, 1995. Silent otitis media was diagnosed with otoscopy, pneumatic otoscopy and impedance audiometry by DANAC 40 model impedance audiometer from DANA JAPAN Co. RESULTS: The prevalence of silent otitis media with effusion was 14.5% and peak at 6 years of age(17.8%).The prevalence of silent otitis media with effusion according to sex were 11.8% in boys group, 17.9% in girls group. Nine cases(11.8%) involved bilaterally. Forty three cases(89.6 %) were asymptomatic cases. CONCLUSIONS: Among 329 preschool children, the prevalence of silent otitis media with effusion was 14.5%. The prevalence by sex showed slightly higher in girls group than boys group. OME involved unilateral site mostly and subjective symptoms were rare.

8.PNS CT in Symptomatic Patients without Mucosal Abnormality: The Relationship between Anatomic Variations and Symptomas.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to investigate the correlation between the symptoms and the incidence of anatomical variant without mucosal abnormality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Out of 892 patients with CT performed for the evaluation of sinus disease symptoms between March 1991 and March 1993, we observed the anatomic variations in 82 symptomatic patients without mucosal abnormality(male:female=43:39, mean age 36. 4 years). The control group included 88 patients with facial bone CT performed for the evaluation of trauma during the same period while patients with recent paranasal sinusitis were excluded. (male:female=76:12, mean age 22. 4 years). The scouis were performed with 5-ram section thickness from posterior margin of sphenoid sinus to anterior margin of posterior ethmoid and then with 3 mm thickness from anterior margin of posterior ethmoid to anterior margin of frontal sinus. The artatomic variations included nasoseptal deviation, concha bullosa, Hailer cells, Agger nasi cells, etc. RESULTS: The anatomic variations were demonstrated in 71 our of 82 symptomatic patients(86. 5%), whereas they were seen 26 of 88 patients(29. 5%) in control group. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that there is a possible causal relationship between anatomic variations and symptomas. Even though without accompaning mucosal abnormalities, anatomic variations could contribute simply to its symptomas. ^natomic variants may obstruct or narrow the airway, leading to turbulating air flow or interrupting ucociliary movement, and finally may produce a series os symptoms.

10.Effect of Speed of Injection on Vital Signs, Dose Requirement and Induction Time for Induction of Anesthesia using Propofol.

BACKGROUND: Induction of anesthesia with propofol commonly associated with reduction in systemic arterial pressure, especially in elderly and high risk patients. This reduction is influenced by the dose and rate of propofol injection. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of different injection rate of propofol on vital signs, dose requirement and induction time during induction period. METHODS: Unpremedicated one hundred and twenty ASA physical status I and II patients aged 20~60 years scheduled for elective surgery were randomly allocated into one of four (150, 300, 600, 1200 ml/hr) groups according to speed of injection of propofol during induction period. Loss of verbal contact was taken as the end-point of induction. Vital signs, SpO2, dose requirement of propofol and induction time were checked. RESULTS: As the injection rate of propofol became slower, there were significant reduction in induction dose and increase in induction time (p<0.05). For example, induction dose and time were 1.82 mg/kg, 223 +/- 58 sec in 150 ml/hr group and 3.14 mg/kg, 50 +/- 11 sec in 1200 ml/hr group, respectively. Also, decrease in systolic and diastolic pressure were less marked at lower injection rates. CONCLUSIONS: Slower injection of propofol produces less vital sign changes and dose requirement for the induction of anesthesia.
