1.Effect of Taekwondo Training on Physical Fitness and Growth Index According to IGF-1 Gene Polymorphism in Children.

This study analyzed the effect of regular Taekwondo training for 16 weeks on physical fitness and growth index depending on different IGF-1 gene polymorphisms. The subjects of the study were 44 male students who were 8 year years old. The IGF-1 gene showed the highest frequency of 18 CA repeat (190 bp) in 50% of subjects, and was found in the homozygote (n=11), heterozygote (n=22) and non-carriers (n=11). The results of the physical fitness and growth index among the gene polymorphism groups indicated no significant differences but the expected height of the non-carrier group was significantly high (p<0.05). After Taekwondo training, the homozygote group and the non-carrier groups demonstrated significant (p<0.05) increase in grip strength and in time in the standing with one leg while closing eyes test, respectively. Only the homozygote group had a significant (p< 0.05) increase in thigh circumference. IGF-1 concentration significantly (p<0.05) increased in the heterozygote group, while HOMA-IR significantly (p<0.05) decreased in the homozygote group. Furthermore, there was a significant (p<0.05) decrease in glucose in both the homozygote and the non-carriers groups. The difference between physical fitness and growth index depending on the IGF-1 gene polymorphism after Taekwondo training did not show consistent impact.

2.The Results of Unilateral Osteotomy to Correct the Deviated Nose.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Osteotomy, usually carried out bilaterally, is a commonly performed procedure to correct the bony dorsum of deviated nose. However, it is an invasive maneuvers which can affect the stability of nasal bone and develop complications, such as, edema and ecchymosis. This study aims to evaluate the usefulness of unilateral osteotomy in correcting a deviated nose with various scoliosis. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: We studied 9 of the 69 patients who underwent corrective rhinoplasty with unilateral osteotomy to correct the bony nasal dorsum between 2010 and 2014. For patients whose bony nasal dorsum was corrected well after performing osteotomy on the convex side of the bony dorsum, the opposite side was not operated on; however, if correction was incomplete, osteotomy was additionally performed on the opposite side. For this study, patients who underwent bilateral osteotomy were excluded from the study. The improvement of correction was assessed by comparing the preoperative and postoperative photos. RESULTS: Of the nine patients treated with unilateral osteotomy, 5 cases were C or reverse C type deviations, 1 case was S type deviation and 3 were straight deviations. Five of the nine patients improved greatly and the rest improved significantly. None of the patients experienced worsening change postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Osteotomy is essential but invasive maneuver, so it is desirable to reduce the number of times to execute. By performing osteotomy on the convex side of the nose first, we can correct the deviated nose effectively while reducing the number of implementation.

3.Effects of Aerobic Exercise Training and Natural Fermented Vinegar on Body Composition and Cardiopulmonary Function in Middle Aged Women.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of long-term endurance exercise and natural fermented vinegar on body composition and cardiopulmonary function of 50-aged postmenopausal women. METHODS: Subjects were divided into four groups (sedentary group, aerobic exercise group, natural fermented vinegar group, and aerobic exercise plus natural fermented vinegar group) to perform natural fermented vinegar intake or aerobic exercise for 8 weeks. Body weight, body composition, cardio-pulmonary function test, and blood concentration of glucose, lipid profiles, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase were measured. RESULTS: The results showed that natural fermented vinegar or aerobic exercise training for 8 weeks no significantly improved body weight control and body composition. However, natural fermented vinegar plus aerobic exercise training for 8 weeks significantly improved cardiopulmonary function. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that natural fermented vinegar plus aerobic exercise training has a significant effect on anti-fatigue.

4.Low-Grade Fibromyxoid Sarcoma Arising in Posterior Nasal Cavity: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS), a soft tissue tumor that has high recurrence and metastasizing potential, rarely occurs in the head and neck region. Therefore, the treatment for LGFMS in the facial area is challenging in terms of cosmetic and functional maintenance. The authors report a case of LGFMS in the posterior nasal cavity. It was completely removed in parallel with the nasal endoscopic and oral approach, but the lower margin was closed by preserving the soft palate. The patient is well without any recurrence or metastasis after 5 years of follow-up.

5.Detection of Bacterial and Viral Pathogens in Stool Specimens Using Multiplex PCR.

BACKGROUND: The rapid and accurate detection of diarrheal pathogens is essential to prevent the spread of diarrheal diseases. Recently, a multiplex PCR assay was developed to simultaneously detect various bacterial and viral diarrheal pathogens. In this study, we investigated the frequency of detection of various potential pathogens causing diarrhea by using multiplex PCR and compared the results to the results of stool culture tests for bacteria and enzyme immunoassays (EIAs) for rotaviruses and Clostridium difficile toxin B (CDTB). METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the results for multiplex PCR, culture tests, and EIA obtained from stool specimens submitted to the laboratory from May 2013 to September 2014. Multiplex PCR was performed using the Seeplex diarrhea ACE detection kit (Seegene, Korea), which detects five viruses and eight bacteria. RESULTS: Among 890 stool specimens, 408 (45.8%) were found to be positive by PCR. The PCR positivity rate for bacteria and viruses was 31.1% (277/890) and 18.9% (161/890), respectively. The relative frequencies of microorganisms or toxins detected by PCR were, in decreasing order, CDTB 24.0%, Clostridium perfringens 20.6%, norovirus-GII 15.8%, rotavirus 11.3%, Campylobacter spp. 7.5%, enteric adenovirus 5.7%, and Salmonella spp. 5.1%. The concordance rate of the results obtained using the PCR and culture tests was 99.2% for Salmonella spp., 95.7% for Campylobacter spp., and. 79.8% for C. difficile . The concordance rates for rotaviruses and CDTB were 99.7% and 83.6%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The multiplex PCR method showed a high detection rate and is useful for the simultaneous detection of various diarrheal pathogens.

Nonhuman primate models are valuable in biomedical research. However, reference data for clinical pathology parameters in cynomolgus and rhesus monkeys are limited. In the present study, we established hematologic and biochemical reference intervals for healthy cynomolgus and rhesus monkeys anesthetized with ketamine hydrochloride. A total of 142 cynomolgus monkeys (28 males and 114 females) and 42 rhesus monkeys (22 males and 20 females) were selected and analyzed in order to examine reference intervals of 20 hematological and 16 biochemical parameters. The effects of sex were also investigated. Reference intervals for hematological and biochemical parameters were separately established by species (cynomolgus and rhesus) and sex (male and female). No sex-related differences were determined in erythrocyte-related parameters for cynomolgus and rhesus monkey housed in indoor laboratory conditions. Alkaline phosphatase and gamma glutamyltransferase were significantly lower in females than males in both cynomolgus and rhesus monkeys aged 48–96 months. The reference values for hematological and biochemical parameters established herein might provide valuable information for researchers using cynomolgus and rhesus monkeys in experimental conditions for biomedical studies.
