Journal of the Korean Pediatric Society 1993;36(9):1219-1226
This study was conducted to evaluate the postnatal changes of serum creatine kinase (CK) and its isoenzymes in normal and asphyxiated newborns. In normal newborns total CK, CK-MM and CK-MB reached a plateau between 2 and 24 hr after birth whereas the serum CK-BB remained stable after birth. CK-MM, CK-MB and CK-BB respectivily composed 90~94%, 5~7% and 1~5% of total CK during study period. In asphyxiated newborns total CK, CK-MM and CK-MB reached maximal value at 12 hr after birth whereas CK-BB decreased after birth. There were no significant differences between normal and asphyxiated newborns in total CK, CK-MM and CK-MB during study period (up to 24 hrs after birth). But CK-BB of asphyxiated newborn was elevated significantly (p<0.05) within 6 hrs after birth compared to normal newborns. There were no significant differences of CK and its isoenzymes between patients evaluated by 5 min Apgar scores(0~3, 4~6 and 7~10) or degree of HIE (HIE stage 0~I, II and III). According to these results, the serum CK-BB is elevated in asphyxiated newborns during 1st 6hrs after birth but has no predictive values of the extent of cerebral damage.

A 35 year old woman, gravid 5, multiparous, was admitted to our department at 6 weeks and 5 days of gestation after being diagnosed with cervical pregnancy. Before the evacuation, the uterine arteries were embolized using angiographic techniques. As a result, dilatation and curettage were performed with minimal hemorrhage. We report one case of cervical pregnancy managed, successfully with preoperative uterine artery embolization and evacuation.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1993;34(12):1213-1220
Photorefractive keratectomy was performed, using the excimer laser, on 117 myopic eyes. The eyes were classified in three groups by preoperative refractive errors, Group I included eyes with myopla ranging from -2.00D to -5.75D; Group 2 included eyes with myopia ranging from -6.00D to -9.75D; Group 3 included eyes with myopia over -10.0D. The eyes were followed up over six months to one year. During the follow up period, slit lamp examination, visual acuity, refractive error, pachometer, corneal opaty, IOP and corneal topography were examined, The results were as follows; 1. Preoperative mean visual acuities were 0.07 and postoperative mean visual acuities were 0.72. 2. Postoperative refractive errors were smaller and visual acuities were better in eyes of Group I than Group 2 or 3. 3 Immediate postoperative refractive states were hyperopia and regress over 4 to 12 weeks. 4.Keratometer reading and central corneal thicknesses were decreased postoperatively, but 4 to 12 weeks later, they started to increase. 5 There were mirlimal comeal corneal peaking at 4 weeks and diminishing over the next 3 to 6 months, which were not felt to be visually signicant.

The Korean Journal of Parasitology 1970;8(2):67-70
During the period from May to October 1969, the authors carried out a series of tests with the aim to ascertain the present status of susceptibility of adult cockraoches to various insecticides. The tests on the susceptibility of cockroaches to dieldrin, D.D.V.P., Diazinon; Dibrom, Malathion and lindane were performed with the topical application and the residual film methods under the conditions of 26 degrees C and 80% of relative humidity. The insects tested were collected from Seoul City and were reared at the laboratory. Some of the important results so far obtained can be summarized as follows: The median lethal doses (LD(50)) of the five insecticides against female adult cockroaches were: 0.4 ug/roach or 4.02 ug/body weight (gm) by Dieldrin, 0.29/roach or 2.88 ug/body weight (gm) by D.D.V.P., 0.29 ug/roach or 2.96 ug/body weight (gm) by Diazinon, 0.54 ug/roach or 5.37 ug/body weight (gm) by Dibrom, and 2.96 ug/roach or 29.60 ug/body weight (gm) by Malathion. And those against male adult cockroaches were: 0.18 ug/roach or 3.29 ug/body weight (gm) by Dieldrin, 0.27 ug/roach or 4.89 ug/body weight (gm) by D.D.V.P., 0.16 ug/roach or 2.91 ug/body weight (gm) by Diazinon, 0.49 ug/roach or 8.97 ug/body weight (gm) by Dibrom, and 1.32 ug/roach or 24.19 ug/body weight (gm) by Malathion. The level of susceptibility of adult cockroaches to the insecticides tested was 1.0-1.6 times higher as compared with the results obtained on the Japanese Takashi strain. The median knockdown times (LT(50)) of the female adult cockroaches by insectcides at 1% concentration of 3 mg per square centimetre were 1.82 hours by Malathion, 1.36 hours by Diazinon, 0.56 hours by Lindane, 0.50 hours by Dibrom, and 2.56 hours by D.D.V.P. A marked difference was seen to exist between the males and the females. The female cockroaches were more resistant than the male to Dieldrin, Diazinon and Malathion.

Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine 1984;1(1):41-48
The soil bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a plant pathogen that causes crown gall tumors by infecting the wounded dicotyledonous plants and subsequent integration of bacterial DNA into plant nuclear DNA. Virulent A. tumefaciens strains harbor a large Ti (tumor–inducing) plasmid that carries genes essential for tumorigenesis. In the present study, 13 strains (Malus pumila Mill; A₁₋₃, Populus monilifera; W₁₋₆, Populus tomentiglandlosa; P₁₋₃ and Rosa species; R₁) of Agrobacterium isolated in korean crown gall tumors and plasmids were observed in 6 strains (W₂, W₃, W₆, P₁, P₃ and A₂). The test for crown gall tumor formation was resulted only in ATCC15955 and KW2 strains inoculated into the stem of sun flower and the development was observed for 4 and 6 weeks after inoculation. Above two Ti plasmids (pTi) were purified by cesium chloride-ethidium bromide density gradient centrifugation and digested with restriction enzyme and fragments of pTiATCC15955 and pTiKW₂ observed by EcoR I ; 25&27, Hind III ; 23&21, BamH I ; each 20 and Hpa I ; 12&27. And sizes of pTiATCC15955 and and pTiKW₂ calculated as 200 and 87 kbases. Octopine was isolated from tumor tissue (W₁₋₆ and P₁₋₃) and these strains confirmed as octopine type.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1990;25(2):487-492
Total hip replacement arthroplasty is the most commonly used method in the surgical treatment of degenrative arthritis of the hip nowadays. If degenrative arthritic changes of the hip is caused mainly by abnormal femoral head, and the acetabular chnages are secondary to it, replacement of the femoral head without acetabular implanting can be expected to elicit regenerative acetabular changes secondary to the newly implanted femoral head component with spherical contour. 8 cases of degenerative arthritis of the hip were treated with bipolar endoprosthesis at the Seoul National University Hospital from January, 1987 to November, 1988 Acetabular reaming to the subchondral bone was performed in all the cases. In 2 cases, bone graft was added for augmentation of the thin medial wall. The mean follow-up was 15.5 months ranging from 12 to 26 months. The results were compared with 18 cases treated with total hip replacement arthroplasty during the same period. Both two groups showed no significant difference in the postoperative improvement of the range of motion and Harris score. In 2 cases treated with bipolar endoprosthesis, follow-up radiographs demonstrated some improvement of the degenerative changes such as subchondral sclerosis or cyst, which suggests the occurrence of the regenerative reaction in the scetabular side. 7 cases among 8 cases were pain-free, and 1 case had mild pain. In conclusion, bipolar endoprosthesis can be considered as another useful, less invasive method with shorter operation time in the surgical treatment of degenerative arthritis of the hip although more expericnces and longer follow-up are needed.
