Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1995;36(5):890-895
Rieger's syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant developmental anomaly characterized by ocular and systemic abnomalities. These disorders are typically bilateral and usually diagnosed at birth or in the childhood. The most common ocular defects are hypoplasia of the iris, a prominent Schwalbe's line with iris strands and corectopia. A large number of patients have glaucoma due to devel-opmental defects of the anterior chamber angle structure. The authors experienced a case of Rieger's syndrome which was found in 31-year-old female, who had characteristic ocular and other systemic abnormalities. Associated glaucoma was well controlled by filtering surgery.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1997;32(5):1252-1259
The bone mineral density (BMD) has been measured for evaluation of the osteoporosis. Of the various methods of measuring the BMD, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) has been known to be an accurate, objective, and easily reproducible method. The authors measured BMD in patients with intertrochanteric fracture of the femur for comparison with results in the normal control. The BMD was measured in thirty-two patients with intertrochanteric fracture by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry from March 1993 to March 1995. And the relationship between the severity of osteoporosis and intertrochanteric fracture of the femur was studied. The comparison of BMD between fracture patients and normal control was done in the population below 79 years old of age (23 fracture patients and 90 normal controls). The average BMD in the intertrochanteric fracture group was 0.558g/cm2 in the neck, 0.425g/cm2 in Ward's triangle and 0.568g/cm2 in the trochanter, while in the normal control group it was 0.870g/cm2 in the neck, 0.681g/cm2 in Ward s triangle and 0.772g/cm2 in the trochanter. In comparison with the normal control group, the BMD in fracture group was about 79% of the normal control group. The BMD in the proximal femur was decreased by about 14% with the age increasing decennially after 50 years. The BMD at Ward s triangle and trochanter was much lower in type III and IV of Tronzo classification than in type I and II .The BMD did not show significant correlation with the height and weight of the patients.

Annals of Dermatology 1997;9(2):159-162
Darier's disease is a well-known genodermatosis characterized by recurrent waxy, hyperkeratotic papules usually occurring over the seborrheic area. The major histopathological changes are characteristic acantholysis and dyskeratosis which are diagnostic of the disease with typical clinical features. There are less common variants including the hypertrophic, vesicobullous and linear type. However, comedonal lesions are very rare. We report an unusual case of Darier's disease, which showed prominent comedonal papules and plaques over the face, scalp and upper trunk with the typical findings of Darier's disease.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2003;44(12):2919-2923
PURPOSE: To report a case of primary extramedullary plasmacytoma which is rare in the orbit. METHODS: A 72 year-old man was referred for the evaluation of a slowly developing proptosis in the right eye. A CT scan revealed the orbital mass which involved optic nerve and surrounding tissues. Incisional biopsy via lower lid was performed. RESULTS: Histopathologic examination confirmed the findings of plasmacytoma. Systemic evaluation including bone marrow biopsy, clinical and radiologic evaluation showed no evidence for multiple myeloma. Taken together we diagnosed the orbital lesion as a primary extramedullary plasmacytoma. He was treated with radiation therapy and followed for 6months without evidence of new lesion or systemic disease. CONCLUSIONS: We experienced a case of primary extramedullary plasmacytoma which is rare in the orbit. Continuing careful observation is warranted because of its variable natural course and prognosis.

Journal of the Korean Society for Microbiology 1997;32(6):667-674
The T cell responses to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) were analyzed in acute hepatitis patients, chronic active hepatitis (CAH) patients and asymptomatic carriers. Neither proliferative responses nor substantial cytokine production of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in response to HBsAg was detected. For further studies, HBsAg- reactive T cell lines were prepared from PBMC of the hepatitis patients and asymptomatic carriers. No proliferative response of the T cell lines was observed. Interestingly, however, T cell lines obtained from acute hepatitis patients were found to produce IFN-r, but not IL- 4, in response to HBsAg stimulation, whereas T cell lines obtained from CAH patients and carriers were not. Results of this study suggest that HBsAg-reactive T cells producing Thl type cytokines may play an important role in the viral clearance during acute infections, while defects in those T cells may be responsible for the viral persistency.

9.The surgical correction of post-traumatic malocclusion.

Journal of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons 1998;25(4):613-621
The characteristics of modern society's trauma is a propensity for multiple and severe trauma, specially, the fatal damage accompanied by facial bone fracture. We observed the malocclusion owing to delayed prompt treatment If the fractured fragments is crushed severely, it is difficult to make them positioned into the normal anatomical states and to fix them tightly. Post-traumatic malocclusion is usually caused by a delay in treatment and inadequate anatomic reduction. Inadequately treated facial bone fractures result in facial disfiguring and functional impairment of mastication and speech. We performed 27 cases of correction of post-traumatic malocclusion between April 1994 and June 1996. We used various operative techniques such as anterior segmental osteotomy, Le Fort osteotomy, maxillary segmental osteotomy and mandibular sagittal split osteotomy. If the malocclusion was due to disarrangement segmental osteotomy. If that malocclusion was attributed to a malpositioned skeletal bone, we take maxillary segmental osteotomy or mandibular sagittal split osteotomy. We acquired the desirable occlusion first followed by a fixation between the mandible and maxillary skeletal bones with the bite block. The aim in the correction of malocclusion was to create a harmony of centric relation and centric occlusion. After operation, intermaxillary fixation with bite block have many advantages in the treatment of malocclusion.

Journal of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine 1997;18(5):490-450
BACKGROUND: In women, the prevalence of depression is known to be more than twice as high as in men. Because many depressive women complain of their somatic symptoms instead of neurovegetative ones, many cases of depression have been misdiagnosed. Women also tend to use medicine more frequently than men do to manage depression. So we investigated the relationship between somatic symptoms and drug use in housewives for better management. METHODS: From 1st. March to 31st. March in 1996, the prepared questionnaires were presented to housewives living in the area of Kyung-ju city, who responded the questionnaires under direct interview. The questionnaire was composed of two parts. One part included demographic data, somatic complaints, drug use, places of drug purchase, current diseases that had been diagnosed by doctors. The other included Korean standard Beck Depression Inventory-questionnaire. The subjects were divided into two groups by BDI score(21 point), which was the cut-off point for depression in Korea. The relationships of somatic symptoms and drug use between the two groups were analyzed. RESULTS: There were 110 housewives who had depressive trends among 569 respondents. In general characteristics, there was significant difference between the two groups except the item of religion. In the items of somatic symptoms, there were more somatic symptoms in the group of high BDI score(>_21) except fatigue(P<0.01). More drug users were found in the group of high BDI score(>_21) (P<0.05). In the group of high BDI score(>_21), there was definite correlation between the items of somatic symptoms and drug use. There was no difference between the two groups in the item of drug purchase site. The most common site of drug purchase was the drug store in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Depressive housewives complained of more somatic symptoms and more often used drugs as well.
