BACKGROUND: Numerous studies demonstrated that genistein induced the decrease of proliferation and apoptosis in a variety of cells. However, there is no report about the effect of genistein on proliferation and demise of mast cells. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to investigate genistein-induced aoptosis of mast cells as it pertains to both its basic drug mechanism and the potential therapeutics of the pathologic conditions accompanying mast cell proliferation. METHODS: p815 murine mastcytoma cell line was used to assess the effects of genistein treatment including viability and proliferation, morphlolgic study, DNA electrophoresis, the effect of caspase inhibitor, western blotting, and mitochondrial event. RESULTS: Genistein indeced many apoptotic manifestations as evidenced by changes in cell morphology, generation of DNA fragmentation, activation of caspase 3, and DNA hypoploidy. The reduction of mitochondrial membrae potential and the release of cytochrome c to cytosol were also demonstrated. However, reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential and cytochrome c release were not prevented by caspase inhibitors zVAD-fmk and BocD.fmk, or PTP(permeability transition pore) blockers such as bongkrekic acid and cyclosporin A. CONCLUSIONS: This in vitro study suggests that pathologic increases in mast cell number possibly be regulated in vivo by therapeutic strategy enhancing apoptosis by treatment of genistein.

The authors present a 3-year-old boy showing generalized migratory erythema with doubleedged scaling broders since 3 month after birth, Histologic examination revealed an acanthotic epidermis with hyperkeratosis, focal parakeratosis and papillomatosis. The PAS-positive, diastase-resistant amorphous materials were found in th space of parakeratoric scales and cytoplasms of spinous cells just below the parakeraroric lesion. On clectron microscopy, we could observe the round dense bodise in the upper spinous cells and a number of lipoid granules in the horny layer. Our patient showed characteristic clinical, clinical, microscopic and ultrastructural gearures of ichthyosis linearis citcumflexa(ILC). However, he showed no hair shaft abnormalities, which is the common finding of Metherthon/sysdrome(NS) along with ILC and atopic deathesis.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1991;32(9):825-831
A 10 month-old female visited our out-patient clinic, whose chief complaint was an enlargement of right eyeball since 5 month ago. Her physical examination disclosed Cafe-au-lait spots on abdomen and back and a tumor-like mass was seen on right vitreous cavity by slit lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, and orbit CT. The working diagnosis was either neurofibromatosis or retinoblastoma, but choroidal hemangioma was also another possibility tomographically. However, MRI suggested the possibility of choroidal malignant melanoma unexpectedly. Subsequently the eye was enucleated and the tumor was confirmed to be a choroidal malignant melanoma. We report this interesting case and the other case of choroidal malignant melanoma diagnosed by MRI in 57 year-old male.

6.Antibiotic Sensitivity of Pathogenic Bacteria of Osteomyelitis: Trend of recent 5 years, especially on Staphylococcus aureus
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1977;12(4):667-671
168 patients with osteomyelitis who were admitted and operated in Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital between January in 1972 and December in 1976 ware reviewed and analized. The following results were obtained. 1. 138 strains of bacteria were isolated from 167 pus culture in osteomyelitis, about 82.6% 2. Of these, 112 strains are staphillococcus aureus. (81.2%). 3. Degrees of Sensitivity to antibiotics were as follows: in sensitive order, cephalothin was 99.0%, gentamycin 98.0%, cloxacilnli 94.5%, lincocin 92.0%, kanamycin 86.3%, streptomycin 81.2%, and chloramphenicol 80.6% was resulted, 4. Resistant rate to antibiotics were as follows: in resistant order, penicillin 88.8%, oxytetracycline 79.6%, tetracycline 76.2%, and ampicillin 72.2% was resulted.

7.Capillary Hemangioblastoma in the Spinal Cord: A Case Report
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1987;22(2):573-577
The capillary hemangioblastoma, as originally defined by Lindau and by Cushing and Bailey, is widely regarded as being of Vascular origin and relatively uncommon. The most frequent site of this neoplasm is the cerebellum and second frequency is the spinal cord. We experienced a case of capillary hemangioblastoma arising at the upper thoracic spinal cord with the paraplegia and the sensory disturbance below the nipple line. The total laminectomy with mass excision was taken and the patient have shown good improvement of the neurological defecits in postoperative period.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1995;33(2):363-368
Kasabach- Merritt syndrame consists of thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and an acute or chronic censumptive coagulopathy in associati an with a rapidly enlarging hemangioma. Most vascular turrnrs causing Kasabach-Merritt syndon e are benign but the associated coagulopathy may be lifethreatening. Our patient, a 30-day-old female infant, was admitted after an increase in the size of a hemangioma present since birth on the right leg with extension to the lower abdomen and left inguinal area. Her herrnglobin count fell to 7.1g/dl, platelet count was 26,000/ul, prothrombin time was 26 seconds, and hypofibrinogenemia developed. The patient was treated with transfusions of platelets, fresh frozen plasma and red cells and prednisolone. for 2 weeks without improvement. We started interferon alfa-2a therapy. Over the past 6 months, he hemangioma progressively diminished in size withcut any serious complication.

Korean Circulation Journal 1999;29(1):28-35
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to examine the safety and feasibility of a primary (direct) stenting in acute myocardial infarction (AMI). In the treatment of AMI, Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) has documented superior reperfusion rate and improved clinical outcomes than thrombolytic therapy. However, there are several limitations of PTCA, such as recurrent ischemia in 10 to 15%, reinfarction in 3 to 5% and restenosis in 30 to 50% of patients. There are several reports that, compared with PTCA, the implantation of coronary stent has been shown to reduce angiographic restenosis and improve late clinical outcomes. But in general, stenting has been contraindicated in thrombus containing lesion due to the risk of subacute thrombosis. With advance in technique and the recognition of the importance of adequate platelet inhibition, the incidence of subacute thrombosis has fallen in patients with acute coronary syndrome and thrombus laden lesion. Methods and Results: In our study, primary stenting was performed in 42 patients of AMI. There are 6 cases (22.5%) target lesion restenosis during the follow up coronary angiography (150+/-86day) and no in-hospital death. Three cases (7.1%) of them require revascularization including two re-PCTA and a coronary artery bypass graft for the recurrent ischemic symptoms. There were no reinfarction and death after discharge. Six-months event free survival reate was 85.7%. CONCLUSION: Primary stenting is safe and feasible in the majority of patients with AMI and results in excellent mid-term outcomes compared with PTCA.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1992;30(6):892-896
Many sensitizing chemicals and additives are used in manifacturing and mending dentures. Among them, phtolyldiethanolamine, a kind of accelerto for polymerization, is necessary only in self-curing acrylic resins which are available for repairing and relining of denture. Although the sotirce of denture stomatitis is still controversial, a true allergy to denture base materials can be recognized by a patch test. We report a case of allergic contact stomatitis due to dentn e relining materials in a 65-year-old denturecariying edentulous patient. Patch testievi.aled positive reaction to polyldiethanolamine which is considerd to be contained in a cold curing acrylic resin fluid.
