In the treatment of posterior cruciate ligament injury, posterior displacerrient of tibia might be occured because of the direction of gravity due to weight of lower leg. To prevent this problem several methods have been introduced, but not settled yet. Therfore the author tried to solve this problem by applying Quengel brace that was firstly described by Mommsen in 1922 and perfected by Jordan using the correction of flexion contracture of the knee in hemophiliacs. But owing to the development of some problems in original hinge for prevention of posterior displacement of tibia after posterior cruciate ligament injury, we modified the design of the hinge that more effective anterior traction force should be operated on tibia. The authors applied Quengel brace including original and modified hinge to 21 cases of posterior cruciate ligament injury between June 1983 and May 1986. The followings were obtained. 1. By modification of the hinge, more effective anterior traction force operated on tibia without pressure sore or joint narrowing. 2. On clinical application of modified Quengel brace, posterior displacement of tibia were prevented effectively.

Between May, 1984 and October, 1986, twenty patients were treated at Han-Ra Hospital of JejuCity and Chung-Ang University Hospital of Seoul with immediate internal fixation with or without bone graft of open fractures of the long bones within three days. Fractured bones were ten tibiae, six femurs, three humeri and one radius and ulna. The injuries were classified on the basis of extent of soft tissue injury as defined by Gustilo and Anderson and consisted of four TypeI injuries, five Type II injuries and eleven Type III injuries. All wounds were closed primarily and radiological follow up was qhecked every month till union occurred. The complications included two deep infections, one non-union and one amputation. This study demonstrates that immediate internal fixation with bone graft when necessary is a beneficial method of treatment of open fractures of the long bones if copious irrigation, adequate debridement and skillful internal fixation technique are given golden period after injury. The results were related to the severity of the initial soft tissue injury and surgical technique and the period of union was not related to the individual bone. Autogenous bone grafting at the time of immediate internal fixation in comminuted or segmental fractures in which interfragmental compression cannot be obtained is recommended.

BACKGROUND: Propioriacterium acnes plays an importantol in the development of inflammatory acne, and inflarnmatory lesions are improved by oralnc topical antibiotics. But as Pacnes frequently develop resistance to antibiotics in patients neing long term systemic antibiotic therapy, the theravuti effects diminish, and eventually thay fails. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate theerral susceptability of P. acnes to antibiotics and the difference in the MIC depending on the of oral and/or topical antibiotics, therapeutic effects and disease duration in patients with acie ulgaris. METHODS: We used twenty six strains of P. acnes which were obtained from patients with acne and performcd suseptibility testing for antibiotics usir the E test procedure. RESULTS: 1. The growth of P. acnes was completely inhibited by e ythromycin and chloramphenicol at concentrations of 0.023ug/ml and 0.064ug/ml, respectively cefoxitin at 0.094ug/ml, and by tetracycline and clindarnycin at 0.190 ug/ml. 2. P. acnes was mot susceptible to erythromycin, and olwed by chloramphenicol, cefoxitin, tetracycline, clindamycin in order of decreasing susceptibilit . 3. There were no significant differences in the MIC in reat in to previous antibiotic treatment. 4. For tetracycline, The MIC was significantly lower(p<0.01) in patients who improved after treatment. 5, For tetracycline and chloramphenicol, the MIC was grficantly lower(p<0.05) in patients with less than 2 years disease duration. CONCLUSION: The susptibility of antibiotics for P. acneias highest in erythromycin. There were no significant differences in the MIC in relation to prvious antibiotic treatment, and for some antibiotics the suseptibility was low in patients who dill not show clinical improvement or who had long disease duration.

Locking of the metacarpophalangeal(MP) joint of thumb in mild hyperextension is relatively uncommon problem. The most frequently recognized cause appears that proximal palmar ligament or volar plate were ruptured tranversely with its distal part riding over the volar prominence of the radial condyle of the first metacarpal head. We experienced two cases of locking of the MP joint of the thumb due to volar plate injury. Closed reduction was failed in both cases and open reduction was done by cutting the constricted ligament hundle over the radial condyle of the first metacarpal head. Our description of this mechanism is supported by expeimental evidence that we obtained from the cadeveric specimens. The height of radial side condyle of first metacarpal head is higher than ulna side of that by 1.76mm in both hands of 16 cadeveric specimen. So we are going to report these cases with a review of the literature, and suggest that the preferable location of surgical incision in open reduction is radial side of metacarpal head.

With the advent of faster scan time and new computer program, a scanning technique called “dynamic computedtomography” has become possible. Dynamic CT consists of performing multiple rappid sequence scans after injectionof contrast material. The authors have evaluated the clinical usefulness of CT and dynamic CT of 93 patients withbrain infarction and/or ischemia during the period of 17 months from April 1983 to Aug. 1983 to Aug. 1984 inDepartment of Radiology, Chonbuk National University Hospital. The results were as follows; 1. The agedistribution ranged from 18 years to 78 years. Among them the most common age group was between 50 years and 59years(40.9%). 2. The sites of brain infarction were cerebral lobes(63 cases,68), basal ganglia(15 cases, 16.1%)and mlultiple sites(6 cases, 6.4%). The common affected site was middle cerebral artery territories. 3. Thecontrast enhancement of acute infarction was noted in 14 cases(17.5%) which occured commonly between 3 days and 2weeks from ictus. 4. The patterns of time-density curve in brain infarction and/or ischemia were as follow: a .Depression of slow wash-in phase was 20 cases(59%). b. Lower peak concentration was 17 cases(50%), c. Lower anddelayed peak concentration was 7 cases(21%), d. No definite peak concentration was 6 cases(18%). First threepatterns of time-density curve were thought as relatively characteristic curve of brain infarction and/orischemia. 5. Two cases that showed negative findings on precontrast CT scan appeared to be positive findings ashypodensity on postcontrast CT scan and were confirmed as brain infarction by dynamic CT. 6. The diagnostic entityof dynamic CT scan were as follows: a. large artery thrombotic infarction were 23 cases (58%). b. lacunarinfarction were 6 cases (15%). c. ischemia were 5 cases (13%), d. normal were 5 cases(13%), In six cases oflacunar infarction which was doubtful hypodensity on pre-and postcontrast CT scan had a marked difference in CT#(HU) on absolute scale graph of dynamic CT, so diagnosis of lacunar infarction could be made easily. 7. Theclinical values of dynamic CT consist in not only diagnosis of lacunar infarction but also evaluation ofeffectiveness of medical or surgical treatment.

Background: This study was conducted to identify the level of gender sensitivity and gender equality consciousness among dental hygiene students and to confirm the necessity of gender equality programs in the curriculum. Methods: A self-report questionnaire was conducted with some dental hygiene students using the Gender Sensitivity tool and Korean Gender Egalitarianism Scale for Adolescents (KGES-A). Results: First, the gender equality consciousness of the students who took women’s studies was high in the areas of educational life and socio-cultural life, and that of the subjects of grandparent families and Catholic was found to be high in the domestic life area. Second, the gender sensitivity of the subjects who took women’s studies was found to be high in all sub-areas. In addition, the gender sensitivity of females was higher in the areas of sexual identity, non-violence, and self-reflection than that of males. That of 4-year college students was higher in the areas of sexual identity, openness to gender roles, and non-violence than that of 3-year college students. In addition, the gender sensitivity of Catholic students was high in the areas of sexual identity and openness to gender roles. Third, gender equality consciousness was found to have an effect depending on whether subjects took women’s studies, family type, family type, and religion, and gender sensitivity was found to have an effect depending on whether subjects took women’s studies or gender. Conclusion Since dental hygienist is a profession that targets humans, education that can instill equal awareness and values of humans is important. To inspire gender sensitivity and gender equality consciousness in a prospective professional, it is necessary to conduct programs and education related to gender intelligence within dental hygiene curriculum.

We investigated the range of knowledge about mental health and the attitude toward mentally-ill community residents and the results of the investigation were taken as a foundation of the program of a community mental health project. The results were as follows: 1) The residents of Ansan community showed sympathetic and positive attitude toward the community mental health ideology. 2) The opinion leaders and females had more authoritative and negative tendency to the mentally-ill. 3) The more aged the more negative, conservative, and socially restrictive attitudes were shown toward the mentally-ill. 4) The home-owners had sympathetic attitude toward the mental illness but opposed the establishment of mental health facilities in their community with behavioral reaction. Therefore, the community education about mental health should be actively and intensively concentrated upon the females, the people of old age, the opinion leaders and the home-owners.
