PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore status and level of communication ability, interpersonal relationships, anxiety, and depression in Korean soldiers and identify factors that influence depression. METHODS: A cross sectional study design was employed. The instruments were PCI (Primary Communication Inventory), RCS (Relationship Change Scale), STAI (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), and CES-D (The Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale). Data were collected from 961 soldiers from Gyeong-gi Province and analyzed using SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. RESULTS: The mean score for PCS, RCS were 87.0+/-11.43; and 98.8+/-14.17 respectfully and for STAI-I (state-anxiety), and STAI-II (trait-anxiety), 34.7+/-10.36; and 36.6+/-9.64 respectfully, and for CES-D, 11.2+/-7.0. Of the participants 22.2% were in the clinical group for depression. Major variables showing significant correlations were family intimacy, intimacy with friends or colleague, and inconvenience in not being able to use computer or internet. STAI-II, intimacy with friends or colleague, STAI-I accounted for 44.2double dagger of the variance in depression. CONCLUSION: The study results suggest that a systemic approach needed to relieve soldiers' anxiety and depression. Development of program for communication training, activities for leisure and interpersonal relationship during military life could contribute to lessening depression and anxiety in solder.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of Mcdonald's cerclage and postoperative care on perinatal outcome in patient with incompetent cervix and bulging fetal membranes. METHODS: In the descriptive study, the charts of 78 patients admitted from 1993 to 1997 with a diagnosis of incompetent cervix and cervical dilatation (3cm) were reviewed, Mcdonald's cerclage rate, predisposing factor, fetal salvage by time, factors of falled operation, delivery type were analyzed. RESULTS: The results of the study were as follows; The incidence of II OC was 0.4% of 18702 case, the mean age was 31.9 years old, the average number of gravida was 2.9, the fetal salvage rate was 83.3%, the predisposing factor was previous history of midtrimester termination(56.4%), dilation and curettage(19.2%), unknown(14.1%) etc, the fetal salvage by time was the highest success rate(88.9%) revealed with period from 14th to 16th weeks of gestation, the factors of falled operation were preterm labor(76.9%), PROM(15.4%), infection(7.7%), and delivery type was vaginal delivery in 36 case(55.4%), cesarean section in 29 case(44.6%). CONCLUSION: We concluded that fetal salvage rate was greatly increased when Mcdonald operation was done from 14th to 16th week of gestation if midtrimester abortion and dilatation and curettage were experienced, Even though we have not compared experimental group with control group, upper part of Mcdonald cerclage, no exposure of suture material, benzol conium dressing, bed rest were increased to fetal salvage rate.

Anaphylactic reaction during the perioperative period typically exhibits rapid onset, varying clinical manifestations, and an expected mortality rate of 1.5-9%. Neuromuscular blocking agents are the leading cause of perioperative anaphylaxis. Here, we report a severe case of anaphylaxis that developed in a 66-year-old man due to cisatracurium administration. And he was successfully managed by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and the patient was successfully weaned off 24 hours later.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of self-help management program which strengthens self-efficacy for post stroke elders who attend day care center in Chongju. One group pretest-posttest design was used, and the subjects were 7 post stroke elders with hemiparesis. The self-help management program consisted of 5 sessions and each session included group education on stroke. ROM exercise. recreation and self-care strategies. Those strategies for encouraging and reinforcing self-efficacy provided verbal persuasion. performance accomplishment and vicarious experience. All subjects were questioned before and after the program about ADLs, IADLs. self-efficacy. self-care behavior and depression. The analysis of data revealed that the program was effective to increase the IADLs. self-efficacy and self-care behavior. However. there was no significant difference between pre and post ADLs and depression. The results indicated that this program may be adopted to improve the physical and psychological function of post stroke elderly patients in community settings.

Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing 2000;7(1):30-41
This study was done to provide a firsthand description and analysis of phenomenological data of the singular, subjective and lived experience of patients with hemophilia. Sixe patients suffering from hemophilia were selected for this study. Data were collected from May to August, 1999 through in-depth interviews. The phenomenological method described by Colaizzi was used for the phenomenogical analysis of the data. After transcribing the recorded interview, the researchers read the data repeatedly to identify significant statements, restated them succinctly, and then formulated meanings, themes, theme clusters, and categories. The formulated meanings were grouped into six categories : fear, loneliness, frustration, sypmtoms of hemophilia, reception of support, and commitment. An exhaustive description of the experience of hemophilia can be deduced from this study. It is as follows: even though patients with hemophilia feel fear, loneliness and frustrations and suffer from symptoms of their disease such as bleeding, pain and functional disorders, they commit themselves to the maintenance of good health and enthusiastic life style with the help of support resources such as family members.

Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing 2008;15(4):428-437
PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to assess the oral health knowledge of nursing staff in long-term care institutions and to identify predictors of oral health knowledge. METHOD: For this descriptive correlation study, a self-administered and structured questionnaire was used. Respondents were 111 nursing staff in two long-term care facilities and two long-term care hospitals located in G metropolitan area and C province in the Southern part of Korea. Descriptive statistics, t-test or ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Participants in this study did not have many opportunities to learn about oral health care for elders in long-term care institutions. The percentage of correct answer for oral health knowledge questionnaire was 64.5%. Predictors of oral health knowledge among nursing staffs were education on oral health in long-term care institutions, type of institution, and length of time working with elders. These three variables accounted for 24.2% of variance in oral health knowledge. CONCLUSIONS: Nursing staffs should make an effort to improve their knowledge of oral health. Moreover, oral health educational program for nursing staffs working with elders in long-term care institution is need to be developed and the effectiveness of this education needs to be evaluated.
