1.Practical Training at a Hospital Pharmacy Improved the Drug Information Literacy of Pharmacy Students

Objective: Drug information literacy is necessary for pharmacists. This study investigated the effect of practical training on the drug information literacy of pharmacy students.
Methods: We conducted practical training in the drug information room of hospital pharmacy. Then we asked the students two questions before and after the training. We scored the drug information responses of students using four-point rating scales based on objective criteria. We compared the scores obtained before and after training. In addition, we researched the realization of several secondary and tertiary sources using a visual analog scale (VAS). We then compared VAS findings before and after the training.
Results: The score for drug information responses was significantly improved. For sources other than MEDLINE (Pub Med), the VAS score also improved. The students were aware of the information on package inserts before training. There was significant improvement in awareness of books about pregnancy and lactation (e.g. Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation) after training. However, there were significant individual differences in awareness of MEDLINE, Up To Date, and the Cochrane Library.
Conclusion: This practical training experience improved the drug information literacy of pharmacy students. Before training, there were significant deficiencies in the process of literature search. Therefore, this training was effective for advancement in drug information literacy of pharmacy students.
2.The use of a novel in-bed active Leg Exercise Apparatus (LEX) for increasing venous blood flow

Objective: The incidence of pulmonary embolism (PE) and leg deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has increased in recent years in association with aging and an increase in the number of bedridden individuals. We developed an active in-bed leg exercise apparatus labeled the Leg Exercise Apparatus (LEX) for DVT prevention. We compared the effect of leg exercises performed using the LEX to conventional active ankle exercises on increased blood flow.
Materials & Methods: The subjects were eight healthy adult volunteers [five men and three women, aged 20–34 (mean 27.0) years]. Subjects performed two types of exercise; exercise 1 consisted of leg exercises using the LEX, while exercise 2 consisted of in-bed active plantar flexion/dorsiflexion exercises without the device. Measurements were taken 1, 5, 10, 20, and 30 minutes after exercise including common femoral vein blood flow, mean blood flow velocity, maximum blood flow velocity, and vessel diameter using Doppler ultrasound. Statistical procedures included timed measurement data analysis using a linear mixed model. A Bonferroni correction was used for multiple comparisons.
Results: Compared to resting levels, blood flow reached a maximum value 1 minute after exercise for both exercise types, with a significantly greater increase after exercise 1 (1.76-fold increase) compared to exercise 2 (1.44-fold increase) (p = 0.005). There was a significant difference (p = 0.03) between the two exercises for all values from 1 minute to 30 minutes following exercise. There was no significant difference between exercises for peak or mean blood flow velocity. Compared to resting levels, blood vessel diameter reached a maximum value of 1.47-fold greater at 5 minutes post-exercise for exercise 1 and a maximum value of 1.21-fold greater at 1 minute post-exercise for exercise 2.
Conclusions: Exercise using the LEX increased lower leg venous blood flow and vessel diameter. We propose that the LEX may serve as a new DVT prevention tool.
3.Development of a Novel Database That Rapidly Provides Valuable Information Efficiently Aimed at Improving the Safety of the Simple Suspension Method

Objective: Many patients in Kagawa University Hospital are administered medicines prepared by the simple suspension method. Pharmacists in charge of these patients receive inquiries from doctors and nurses regarding the suitability of medicines for the simple suspension method. Answering these inquiries is complicated and time-consuming as multiple data sources need to be searched. In order to simplify these complicated procedures, we herein attempted to develop a novel database to provide valuable information that could contribute to the safe performance of the simple suspension method, and evaluated its usefulness.
Method: The specifications of the database were determined by analyzing previously answered inquiries. To evaluate the usefulness of the database, we used test prescriptions and compared the amount of time required to gather information using the database and the conventional method, i.e., using books alone. We also analyzed previous prescriptions with the database in order to determine what kinds of problems could be detected.
Results: The investigation of previous prescriptions indicated that some medicines needed to be examined not only for their suitability for the simple suspension method, but also their incompatibility. Therefore, we added a feature regarding the incompatibility of medicines to the database. The time required to gather the information needed to answer the test prescription was shorter with our database than with the conventional method. Furthermore, the database improved the detection of medicines that require particular attention for their properties including incompatibility. An analysis of previous prescriptions using our database indicated the possibility of incompatibility in half of the previous prescriptions examined.
Conclusion: Our database could rapidly provide information related to the simple suspension method, including the incompatibility of medicines.
4.Achievements of a basic life support course taught by medical students

1) Osaka City University Medical School provides basic life support courses in the Skills Simulation Center. Most instructors are members of the Life Support Club, a medical students' extracurricular activity.2) We investigated the numbers and opinions of participants(December 2006 through July 2008). The numbers of trainee and instructors were 1071 and 1223, respectively. The student instructors considered their activities worthwhile.3) The trainees highly appreciated the student instructors and showed that the effectiveness of training was excellent. Our results show that basic life support courses taught by medical students are beneficial for both trainees and student instructors.

PURPOSE:
Patients with pathological stage T1N+ or T2–3N0 gastric cancer may experience disease recurrence following curative gastrectomy. However, the current Japanese Gastric Cancer Treatment Guidelines do not recommend postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy for such patients. This study aimed to identify the prognostic factors for patients with pT1N+ or pT2–3N0 gastric cancer using a multi-institutional dataset.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
We retrospectively analyzed the data obtained from 401 patients with pT1N+ or pT2–3N0 gastric cancer who underwent curative gastrectomy at 9 institutions between 2010 and 2014.
RESULTS:
Of the 401 patients assessed, 24 (6.0%) experienced postoperative disease recurrence. Multivariate analysis revealed that age ≥70 years (hazard ratio [HR], 2.62; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09–7.23; P=0.030) and lymphatic and/or venous invasion (lymphovascular invasion (LVI): HR, 7.88; 95% CI, 1.66–140.9; P=0.005) were independent prognostic factors for poor recurrence-free survival. There was no significant association between LVI and the site of initial recurrence.
CONCLUSIONS
LVI is an indicator of poor prognosis in patients with pT1N+ or pT2–3N0 gastric cancer.
6.Survey of Oral Care for Cancer Patients on Chemotherapy, and Measures to Improve Nurses’ Assessment and Nursing Care Abilities

Oral mucositis is reported to occurs in 40% of cancer patients on chemotherapy, suggesting the need for early oral care intervention in such patients. However, the oral care depends on each nurse and there has been no special document on the oral care for patients in the Respiratory Medicine and the Hematology/Oncology Ward, in which are managed around 100 regimens of chemotherapy per month. Here, to develop an oral care assessment sheet (OC sheet), we conducted a questionnaire survey of 24 ward nurses on oral care for chemotherapy patients and evaluated their assessment abilities using an oral care assessment test that was compliant with the items of the Eiler’s Oral Assessment Guide. The questionnaire survey revealed that nurses performed certain observations and/or interventions without basis and confidence, and that they did not always have patients’ cooperation while assessing their oral condition. They also tended to give inconsistent instructions. Use of the OC sheet enabled nurses to provide early oral care interventions and to confirm the utility of the chosen intervention. Test scores after the introduction of the OC sheet were significantly higher than before, indicating that use of the OC sheet improved nurses’ assessment and nursing care abilities.

Online databases are crucial infrastructures to facilitate the wide effective and efficient use of mouse mutant resources in life sciences. The number and types of mouse resources have been rapidly growing due to the development of genetic modification technology with associated information of genomic sequence and phenotypes. Therefore, data integration technologies to improve the findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability of mouse strain data becomes essential for mouse strain repositories. In 2020, the RIKEN BioResource Research Center released an integrated database of bioresources including, experimental mouse strains, Arabidopsis thaliana as a laboratory plant, cell lines, microorganisms, and genetic materials using Resource Description Framework-related technologies. The integrated database shows multiple advanced features for the dissemination of bioresource information. The current version of our online catalog of mouse strains which functions as a part of the integrated database of bioresources is available from search bars on the page of the Center (https://brc.riken.jp) and the Experimental Animal Division (https://mus.brc.riken.jp/) websites. The BioResource Research Center also released a genomic variation database of mouse strains established in Japan and Western Europe, MoG+ (https://molossinus.brc.riken.jp/mogplus/), and a database for phenotype-phenotype associations across the mouse phenome using data from the International Mouse Phenotyping Platform. In this review, we describe features of current version of databases related to mouse strain resources in RIKEN BioResource Research Center and discuss future views.

9.Determining the relationship between physical status and musculoskeletal injuries in children: a cohort study

Background: In Japan, in 2016, the School Health and Safety Act was revised and examination of extremities in addition to scoliosis became mandatory. Musculoskeletal examinations were subsequently started using a mark sheet-type questionnaire. In the present study, we aimed to analyze the relationship between physical findings and musculoskeletal problems and propose a preventive strategy for musculoskeletal injuries.Methods: In 2017, a total of 4,073 elementary and middle school students underwent direct musculoskeletal examination. In a direct examination, the following elements were included: torticollis; scoliosis; stiffness of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle; flexion and extension in standing position; flat foot; hallux valgus; and alignment of the upper and lower extremities. Of the 4,073 students who underwent direct examination in early 2017, only 3,754 were able to complete the mark sheet-type questionnaires in early 2018. A prospective longitudinal analysis of the data gathered was performed.Results: A total of 396 (11%) students had injuries. The ankle sprain/non-ankle sprain group comprised 119 (3%)/3,635 (97%) students, while the fracture/non-fracture group comprised 105 (2.8%)/3,650 (97.2%) students, respectively. Comparing the sprain group with the non-sprain group, ankle stiffness significantly correlated with ankle sprain in the univariable and multivariable analyses. Injuries occurred more frequently among boys, older students, students with stiff bodies, and students who were involved in sports activities of longer duration.Conclusion: Ankle stiffness was assumed to be a risk factor for ankle sprain. Stretching of the ankle might be effective for preventing ankle sprain. However, further interventional studies are needed to confirm this finding.
10.Relationship between exercise time and musculoskeletal problems in children

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between exercise time and musculoskeletal problems and to determine the appropriate amount of exercise for children in both lower- and higher-grade levels of elementary and junior high schools.Materials and Methods: Mark-sheet-type questionnaires were distributed to and collected from all elementary and junior high schools in two cities. We collected 22,494 questionnaires in total. The relationship between exercise time and musculoskeletal problems was analyzed. The χ2 test and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used for statistical analyses.Results: The mean exercise time in school, in addition to physical education time, was 3.1 hours per week. In 56% of the children, the exercise time was less than 2 hours per week, and in 13% of the children, the exercise time was more than 10 hours per week. Although the rate of sports injury increased with an increase in exercise time, the duration of one-leg stand (a test of balance and muscle strength) also increased with an increase in exercise time. The cut-off values for sports injuries in boys/girls were 2.9/2.9 hours, 4.0/2.9 hours, and 7.5/4.2 hours in lower grade elementary school, higher grade elementary school, and junior high school, respectively.Conclusions: Although an appropriate amount of exercise improves one’s physical health and ability, excessive exercise leads to musculoskeletal problems. Approximately 7 hours/week of exercise is recommended for junior high school students. In elementary school, the exercise time should be carefully decided as the musculoskeletal system of the students is still immature.
