1.Nodular Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis of the Right Shoulder Joint: One Case Report

In 1941, Jaffe and coworkers studied a lesion with histologic appearance of fibrous stroma, pigmented deposition and histiocytic infiltration as well as giant cell, for which they named pigmented villonodular synovitis, bursitis and tenosynovitis. Thereafter many authors have discussed etiology, clinical and radiological features, pathology and treatment regarding the disease. Almost all, this disease is monoarticular and knee joint is most common site. We experienced a case of localized pigmented villonodular synovitis involving an shoulder joint which was treated by local excision and obtained good result.

2.Eccrine Poroma: A report of five cases.

The eccrine poroma was described first by Pinkus et al. in 1956 as a subgroup of benign solid hidradenoma with the histologic structure resembling acrosyringium. The histologic appearance of eccrine poroma greatly resembles that of seborrheic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma. But the clinical lesion is fairly unique and the tumor is most commonly found almost exclusively on the foot, in the skin of the plantar surface. During the past four years, the authors experienced five cases of eccrine poroma which were diagnosed by histopathological examination of the tumor mass. All the cases occurred in the sole and lateral sides of the foot as well. Clinical and pathological features were reviewed and a brief review of the literatures was done.
3.Sarcoidosis Involving the Spinal Dura.

Neurosarcoidosis without systemic manifestation is vary unusual condition. Solitary lesion in the spinal dura is exceptional. The diagnosis of the neurosarcoidosis is very difficult, because the efficacy of Kveim test is low in neurosarcoidosis. The histologic examination is considered as confirmative diagnostic tool. The authors reported a case of neurosarcoidosis involving the dura of the cervical spine, in a fifty-nine year old female who had suffered from mid-back pain for six months and paraparesis for two weeks. There was a dumbbell shaped mass in the D4-5 dura. It showed tan gray color with rubbery consistency. With histological examination, it revealed diffuse non-caseating granuloma. Occasionally asteroid bodies were observed within the cytoplasm of the multinucleated giant cells. After operation, she was treated with steroid, and she has been well about nine month period.

4.Change of Lymphocyte Subsets of HIV-Infected Asymptomatic Persons Administrated with Korean Red Ginseng.

For 16 years after the finding of HIV as an agent of AIDS in 1981, HIV therapeutic drugs of reverse transcriptase inhibitors (AZT, ddI, ddC, d4T) and protease inhibitors have been developed. Recent studies also were focused on a combination therapy by using HIV therapeutic drugs or natural compounds. Korean red ginseng (KRG) of natural compounds has been well known as a good reinforcement agent in Asia. The percentage of CD3+CD4+ T cell in nine HIV-infected patients without KRG treatment averaged 17.8% on baseline and decreased 15.8% after 6 months, whereas the percentage of the cell in fifteen HIV-infected patients with KRG treatment averaged 15.3% on baseline and increased up to 18.9% after the same period. The average percentage of CD3+CD8+ T cell of KRG-nontreated and KRG-treated HIV patients increased after 6 months 47.8% to 50.7% and 44.7% to 51.4%, respectively; and the average percentage of B and NK cell in the KRG-nontreated and KRG-treated HIV patients decreased 9.4% to 7.9% and 13.0% to 9.7%, 8.9% to 8.5% and 16.2% to 11.6%, respectively, KRG, therefore, didn't have any effects on the CD3+CD8+ T cell, B cell, and NK cell. 5.The Importance and Global Trends of Biological Resources: The Introduction of the KCTC and Fungal Resources.

In 1985, the Korean Collection for Type Cultures (KCTC), a former organization of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology Biological Resource Center (KBRC), was officially approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) as a gene bank node and became a member of the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC). The KBRC was also designated as an International Depository Authority (IDA) under Budapest Treaty in 1990. As a national bio-infra for biological resources, the main functions of the KBRC are 1) collection, preservation and distribution of biological resources, 2) research and development of core technologies for valuable bioresources, and 3) construction of local and international network of biological resources and information. As major activities in 2007, about 1,300 type and reference strains including bacteria, actinomycetes, yeasts, filamentous fungi, anaerobes, cell lines and patent strains were newly acquired and about 4,000 strains were distributed to academia, industries and research institutes. The KBRC published 49 papers regarding biological resources and described 18 new microbial species. Especially, a big progress was made in several aspects: establishment of the back-up depository system for over 3,300 patent strains, development of the barcode system for computerized and centralized management of biological resources, and structural remodeling. The KBRC is going to promote tighter networking among domestic and international culture collections, to strengthen the national depository system for bioproducts from research, and to emphasize research and development related to the collection and preservation of valuable biological resources. Consequently, the KBRC will expand its roles not only as a national infrastructure for life science and biotechnology but also as a fundamental basis of many industries in an era of bio-economy in the 21st century.

6.Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma with Skull Base Invasion: Intratumoral Direct Puncture Embolization.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the utility and efficacy of percutaneous direct glue embolization for juvenilenasopharyngeal angiofibromas with skull base invasion MATERIALS AND METHODS: In nine cases of juvenilenasopharyngeal angiofibromas with invasion of the skull base, embolization under general anethesia was performed.Using an 18G spinal needle, direct puncture were made via the transnasal or mandibular sciatic notch. Aglue-lipiodol mixture (1:1-1:3) was injected slowely for 15 to 30 seconds under fluoroscopic control; the numberof injections depended on the size of the tumoral compartment. The results were evaluated by post-embolizationangiography and the distribution of embolic materials was assessed on CT within 1-3 days. The mass was surgicallyremoved 3 to 7 days after embolization. RESULTS: Postembolization angiography revealed total devascularization insix cases, and devascularization greater than 90% of the initial volume in the remaining three. The cast of thetumor was clearly demonstrated by the embolization material with increased density. Surgical removal was safelyperformed without significant bleeding. And no neurologic complications were observed. CONCLUSION: Direct glueembolization of juvenile angiofibroma with skull base invasion appears to be a simple and safe procedure. Thetechnique could be used for other hypervascular lesions in the base fo the skull or parapharyngeal space.

7.Clinical outcome of intrauterine adhesion after Resectoscopy.

OBJECTIVES: From February 1995 to April 1998, those patients who had visited for evaluation of infertility, shown abnormal endometrial pattern on hysterosalpingography underwent resectoscopic operation. We evaluated about its therapeutic effect, recurrence rate of uterine adhesion and effectiveness of its assisted method. METHOD: We have reviewed 45 cases of intrauterine adhesion, classified as a central type, marginal type and multiple type. We used 26F resectoscope made in Storz for operation and inserted Lippes loop or pediatric foley catheter for prevention of readhesion. For promoting reepithelialization, conjugated estrogens(premarin) 5mg daily for 30 - 50 days were given and then 10mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate(provera) were added daily for the last 10 days. We evaluated the uterine cavity condition preoperatively and postoperatively by using hysterosalpingography. RESULT: In 45 cases, 41 cases were followed up postoperatively. 21 cases were markedly improved, 12 cases were improved and 8 cases were not improved or recurred on hysterosalpingography. In 41 cases, for prevention of readhesion 20 cases were used pediatric foley catheter and 5 cases(25%) were recurred. 21 cases were used Lippes loop and 3 cases(14%) were recurred. Pregnancy outcome was as follows;15 cases were pregnant and 10 cases delivered a viable infant, 3 cases aborted spontaneously, 1 case was ectopic pregnancy and laparoscopic salpingectomy was done, 1 case was ongoing pregnancy. CONCLUSION: This report suggests that resectoscopic operation is very effective in the treatment of intrauterine adhesion(therapeutic rate of 81%) and that the use of Lippes loop seems like to have the less recurrence rate than the use of pediatric foley catheter in prevention of postoperative readhesion, but more experience and further follow-up are necessary to obtain more detailed conclusions.

8.Accuracy Evaluation of Treatment Planning System Using Irregular-surface Water Phantom.

We evaluated on the calculation accuracy of treatment planning system (TPS) with phantom having convex and concave surface. The TPS is Eclipse (Varian, USA) using both algorithms AAA and PBC for photon dose calculations. PBC algorithms have three corrections of Batho, modified Batho (M-Batho), and equivalent TAR (E-TAR). The field sizes were 10x10 cm2 and 20x20 cm2, and MLC-shaped fields for these fields. We measured doses at three depths 5, 10 and 15 cm in phantom of SSD=90 cm in the condition of inserted farmer chamber. For given conditions, we have calculated dose with these algorithms and compared them with measured doses. In AAA the calculated doses (dose/MU) were agreed to measured doses within +/-1% in flat and convex surface and were under estimated with -1.9% maximum in concave surface. In PBC the calculated doses were over estimated with +1.7% and +4.1% respectively in flat and convex surface and the differences were from -3.1% to +2.1% in concave surface. In comparison of criteria from AAPM and IAEA reports, and statistical analysis for these results, it is found that the AAA's results are in good agreement with measured values and the M-Batho's results are generally good agreed with measured values among PBC algorithms.

9.Monte Carlo Calculation on the Dose Modulation Using Dynamic Magnetic Fields for 10 MV X-rays.

Monte Carlo calculations were performed to demonstrate the dose modulation with dynamic magnetic fields in phantom. The goal of this study is to obtain the uniform dose distributions at a depth region as a target on the central axis of photon beam under moving transverse magnetic field. We have calculated the depth dose curves for two cases of moving magnetic field along a depth line, constant speed and optimal speed. We introduced step-by-step shift and time factor of the position of the electromagnet as an approximations of continuous moving. The optimal time factors as a function of magnetic field position were calculated by least square methods using depth dose data for static magnetic field. We have verified that the flat depth dose is produced by varying the speed of magnetic field as a function of position as a results of Monte Carlo calculations. For 3 T magnetic field, the dose enhancement was 10.1% in comparison to without magnetic field at the center of the target.

10.Effect of Transverse Magnetic Field on Dose Distribution of High Energy Electron Beam.

In this work we have measured the dose distribution and the percent depth dose of 20 MeV electron beam using the X-OMAT films in order to verify the effects of transverse magnetic field on high energy elecrtron beam in a phantom. The result shows about 30% increase of the percent depth dose at 4.5 cm depth under the transverse magnetic field of 1.5 Tesla at 7.5 cm depth. We have verified that these were in an agreement with other theoretical results.
