1.Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Obesity
Journal of Applied Clinical Pediatrics 2006;0(19):-
Epidemiological and animal studies have demonstrated that dietary lower intake of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) and(or) higher intake of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids(n-6 PUFAs) leading to imbalance of their ratios are closely related to obesity. The mechanisms underlied are involved in PUFA′s effects on fatty acid synthesis and oxidation, adipocyte proliferation and differentiation and leptin expression. At transcription level,PUFAs can regulate the activities of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors and CCAAT enhancer bin-ding proteins.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the association between plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI)-2 expression and invasive potential in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells.
METHODSThe HCC cell lines with high, low, and non-metastatic potentials, namely MHCC97-H, MHCC97-L, and SMMC-7721 respectively, were cultured in vitro. Matrigel invasion assay and Western blot of PAI-2 protein expression were conducted.
RESULTSThe number of invaded cells in MHCC97-L was significantly higher than that in SMMC-7721 (P=0.005), whereas that in MHCC97-H was higher than in MHCC97-L (P=0.017) and SMMC-7721 (P=0.001). Contrarily, PAI-2 protein expression was gradually reducing from SMMC-7721, MHCC97-L, to MHCC97-H (MHCC97-H vs. MHCC97-L, P<0.001; MHCC97-H vs. SMMC-7721, P=0.001; MHCC97-L vs. SMMC-7721, P=0.001). The Pearson's correlation analysis revealed a significant negative association between invaded cell number and PAI-2 expression (r=-0.892, P=0.001).
CONCLUSIONPAI-2 expression may be negatively associated with the invasive potential of HCC.

Objective To investigate the relationship between acute cerebral infarction(CI)and matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9)serum level and polymorphism(C-1562T)in Han population. Methods One hundred and one patients with acute CI from the department of neurology of Taizhou Hospital were included and 114 healthy persons were selected from physical examination as the control group.Serum MMP-9 level was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA).At the same time.genotype was determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP)for the common C-1562T functional promoter polymorphism of the MMP-9 gene. The serum MMP-9 level and genotype frequencies of the MMP-9 gene between the patients and the control group were analyzed. Results The genotype frequencies of the MMP-9 gene C-1562T polymorphism of the two groups were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The results of individual polymorphisms analysis showed that the frequencies of CT and TT genotypes in the C-1562T polyporphismin were of no significant difference between the patients group with CI(13.9%)and the control group(13.2%).The frequencies of-1562T allele was of no statistical difference between the CI group(6.9%)and the control group(7.5%).But serum levels of MMP-9 in CI patients group((138.9±121.8)ng/ml)were significantly higher than in the control group((18.4±4.6)ng/ml,t=9.93,P=0.00).Conclusions Serum level of MMP-9 obviously is increased after ischemic stroke in 48 hours. But genetic polymorphism in MMP-9 promoter(C-1562T)has no definite relationship with MMP-9 genetic expression and CI in the Han population of China. Therefore, the relationship between genetic polymorphism in MMP-9 promoter(C-1562T)and ischemic stroke needs further investigation.

World Journal of Emergency Medicine 2013;4(3):196-200
BACKGROUND:Catheter-related infection (CRI) of the central vein is a common cause of nosocomial infection. This study was undertaken to investigate the pathogen culturing and risk factors of CRI in emergency intensive care unit (EICU) in order to provide the beneficial reference.METHODS:From January 2008 to December 2010, a total of 1363 patients were subjected to catheterization. In these patients, the peak CRI rate of the patients was determined by bacterial cultivation and blood bacterial cultivation.RESULTS:CRI happened in 147 of the 1363 patients using the central venous catheter. The peak rate of CRI was 10.79%, with an incidence of 3.05 episodes per 1000 catheter days. Of the 147 patients, 46.94% had gram-negative bacilli, 40.14% had gram-positive cocci, and 12.92% had fungi. Unconditional logistic regression analysis suggests that multiple catheterization, femoral vein catheterization, the application of multicavity catheter, and the duration of catheterization were the independent risk factors for CRI.CONCLUSION:The risk factors for catheter-related infections should be controlled to prevent the occurrence of nosocomial infection.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of extract of Ginkgo Biloba(EGB) on nerve growth factor(NGF) and Neurotrophin-3(NT-3) expression of hippocampus neurons in streptozotocin-induced type I diabetic rats.
METHODSThirty male SD rats were divided into three groups (n = 10): the control group, diabetic group and EGB-treated group. Strepozotocin were injected intraperitoneally in the later two groups to induce diabetes. EGB-treated group was injected intraperitoneally with EGB, and the same volume of normal saline was injected to the other groups. Concentration of blood glucose and body weight and behaviour were dynamicly monitored. At the end of the 12th week, morphological changes of the hippocampus neurons were observed under microscopy by HE stain. The expression of NGF and NT-3 were assayed by Western blot and RT-PCR respectively.
RESULTSCompared with diabetic group, the behaviour and body weight (P < 0.05) and the concentration of blood glucose (P < 0.05) were significantly improved and the escape latency of Morris water maze test (P < 0.05) was significantly shortened, while the platform searching score was significantly increased (P < 0.01) in EGB treated group; The pathological changes of hippocampus neurons were significantly attenuate by EGB treated; The expression of NGF and NT-3 in hippocampus neurons were significantly increased which assayed by Western blotting and RT-PCR respectively (P < 0.05) in EGB treated group.
CONCLUSIONEGB may improve the learning and memory ability of diabetic rats the mechanism may be attributed to its improvement of the expression of NGF and NT-3 and reducing apoptosis in hippocampus neurons.
