1.Advances in Research on Diagnosis and Treatment of Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome

Objective To facilitate a better understanding of the progress in the research, diagnosis and treatment of Peutz Jeghers syndrome (PJS).Methods Almost all the papers related to PJS from various magazines published in English and Chinese in recent years were reviewed. Current progresses in PJS research and related diagnosis and treatment were discussed in this review.Results PJS is a rare inherited disease with autosomal dominant trait, which is characterized by the presence of hamartomatous gastrointestinal polyps and mucocutaneous pigmentation of the lips, buccal mucosa, and digits. This syndrome is commonly complicated with intestinal obstruction, bleeding, or intussusception,and patients with this disease are at high risk for the development of both GI and extraintestinal malignancies. STK11 on chromosome 19p13.3 are responsible for most cases of PJS. The polyps of PJS tend to have a high incidence of malignant change, and the recurrence of malignancy after treatment is also high. Conclusion The STK11 has been identified as one of the main genes responsible for PJS and has close correlation with formation and development of tumors. Patients with PJS are at high risk for the development of both GI and extraintestinal malignancies.

3.Effect of AT_2 receptor on the proliferation and the NOS expression in cultured adult rat VSMC

AIM: To observe the effect of angiotensinⅡ subtype 2 receptor (AT_2 receptor) on the cultured rat aortic vascular smooth muscle cells. METHODS: The plasmid contained the cDNA of AT_2 receptor was transfected into cultured rat vascular smooth muscle cells. The effects of AngⅡ, Ang Ⅱ+losartan, Ang Ⅱ+PD123319 on the expression of PCNA, the NOS activity and the cell number were observed. RESULTS: The cell number and the expression of PCNA decreased after the cells were treated with losartan. When treated with PD123319, the cell number and the expression of PCNA increased, but the expression of NOS decreased. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that when being activated, AT_2 receptor inhibits the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells and antagonizes the effect of AT_1 receptor, such an effect may be related to the activation of NOS. 4.A study on autonomic nerve function of coronary heart disease patients with panic disorder

Objective To investigate the changes of autonomic nerve function of coronary heart disease (CHD) patients with panic disorder(PD). Methods All the subjects who met with the diagnostic code of CHD and PD were divided into CHD group(n=40) ,PD group(n=36) ,comorbid CHD and PD group(n=27) ,and 40physical examinee were recruited as normal control group. They had a 24 hours Holter ECG monitoring by time and frequency domain analysis of heart rate variability. ANOVA analysis was utilized to statistic the collected data. Results Compared with normal controls,the patients of others groups had every indexs of HRV were reduced. The indexs of HRV of comorbid CHD and PD were lower than the patients of CHD or PD group. The score of time domain SDNN(70.40 ± 14.74)ms,SDANN(91.72 ± 24.46)ms,PNN50(2.83 ±2.07)%, RMSSD( 15.66 ±7.45)ms,frequency domain LF(647.54 ± 129.24)ms2, HF(596. 16± 127.66) ms2 in comorbid CHD and PD. There were significant differences with others groups(P < 0.05 ). Conclusion The autonomic nervous functional of the patients with CHD and PD were in disorder. The autonomic nervous functional disorder of the patients with comorbid CHD and PD was more severe.

6.A study on changes of brain tissue inflammatory cytokines in neonatal rats with periventricular leukomalacia

Objective To study inflammatory cytokines changes in brain tissue of neonatal rats with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL).Method A total of 80 neonatal SD rats (P3) were randomly assigned into 2 equal groups,sham-operated group and PVL group.Rats in each group were further assigned into four subgroups (12,24,48,72 h),with 10 rats in each subgroup.The hypoxic-ischemic PVL modal were established following the procedure:first,isolation and ligation of left common carotid artery,and then exposed to 8% O2 and 92% N2 for 2.5 h.The sham-operated rats were processed with isolation of left common carotid artery only.Rats of the four subgroups were sacrificed at 12,24,48 h and 72 h respectively,then the brains were rapidly removed in corresponding time.Pathological changes of brain tissues were observed using HE stain.The mRNA expression levels of tumor necrosis factor α(TNF-α)and inter leukin-1β (IL-1β) were assessed using real-time quantitative PCR assays,the protein levels of TNF-α and IL-1β were detected using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay method.Result The brains tissues of rats in PVL group showed remarkably hyperemia and edema,with left ventricle enlargement.Periventricular white matter structure was disintegrated comparing with sham-operated group.The expression of TNF-α and IL-1 β mRNA in PVL group increased significantly,reaching peak by 24 h and then gradually decreased 72 h after the procedure.The mRNA levels of TNF-c and IL-1 β were significantly different between each two time points of 12,24 h and 48 h in PVL group (P <0.05).However,there was no differences between 72 h and 48 h within PVL and sham-operated group group(P >0.05).In PVL group,the protein expression trends of TNF-α and IL-1 β were similar to mRNA expression trends.Moreover,the protein levels were significantly different between each two time points of TNF-α and IL-1 β,respectively (P < 0.01).The protein expression levels of TNF-α were different at each time point between PVL group and sham-operated group[(189.2 ± 20.4) pg/ml vs.(131.4 ±5.2) pg/ml at 12 h,(213.8 ± 16.7) pg/ml vs.(127.7 ±7.4) pg/ml at 24 h,(181.7 ± 15.0) pg/ml vs.(126.3 ± 6.0) pg/ml at 48 h,(159.6 ± 25.3) pg/ml vs.(131.4 ± 6.0) pg/ml at 72 h;P <0.01].The protein levels of IL-1β were different between the two groups only at 24 h and 48 h.[(121.8 ±30.0) pg/ml vs.(67.4 ± 13.7) pg/ml,(83.3 ± 15.7) pg/ml vs.(65.3 ± 14.9) pg/ml;P <0.05].In sham-operated group,no differences of TNF-α and IL-1 β protein levels were found between any different time points (P > 0.05).Conclusion Inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β are involved in ischemic-hypoxia induced PVL.Dynamic detection of inflammatory factors is expected to be an important method of early diagnosis,assessment of treatment efficacy and prognosis of PVL.
7.Surgical Treatment of Metastatic Hepatic Cancer (Report of 208 Cases )

Objective To explore the effect of surgical treatment of metastatic hepatic cancer. Methods Two hundred and eight patients with metastatic hepatic cancer received surgical treatment in our department during the past seven years, and their information were analyzed retrospectively in this paper. The ages of these patients ranged from 19 years to 82 years, and 133 of them were male, 75 of them were female. Two of them were complicated with hepatocirrhosis, and 5 with polycystic liver. The metastatic cancer originated from gastrointestinal tract in 121 cases (58.2%), and from other parts of the body in 87 cases (41.8%). One hundred and sixteen of the patients received resection treatment (resection group), and 92 of them received non-resecton treatment (non-resection group). The survival rates of the two groups were compared through Chi square test.Results The 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates for all patients were 56.3%,23.1% and 13.0%, respectively. The 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates were 74.1 %,39.7% and 23.3% in the resection group respectively and 33.7%, 2.2% and 0 in the non-resection group, respectively. 8.Influence of Scalp Point-through-point Acupuncture on 200 kDa Neurofilament Protein in Rats with Acute Cerebral Infarction

Objective: To investigate the effect of scalp point-through-point acupuncture on 200 kDa neurofilament protein (NF-200) in rats with acute cerebral infarction and explore its mechanism on nerve plasticity in cerebral infarction rats. Methods: Healthy male Wistar rats were randomly allocated to sham operation (Group A), model (Group B) and acupuncture (Group C) groups. A rat middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model of cerebral ischemia was made. NF-200 mRNA was measured by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in each group on the 7th, 14th and 28th days. Results: The cerebral expression of NF-200 in group C was significantly different from those in groups A and B (P<0.05); there was a significant difference between groups C and B or A at different time windows (P<0.01),indicating that scalp point-through-point acupuncture could improve the cerebral expression of NF-200. Conclusion: Scalp point-through-point acupuncture can improve neural function,promote the recovery of limb function and increase the expression of NF-200 after cerebral ischemia, exerting a regulative effect on neuronal plasticity in the brain.

10.Culture Methods of the Oligotrophic Marine Microbes

Molecular methods and fluoroscopic techniques suggest that rich microbial diversity exist in the marine environment, but less than 1% of these microbes can be cultured in the laboratory conditions, and that the cultivable dominant species were even less. This limitation has long been a barrier to the development of environmental microbiology and the utilization of marine resources. In the past decade, novel methods for culture and detection of these uncultured marine microbes have successfully applied to obtain several conventionally-uncultured microbes including those from extreme environments. Those progresses have inspired researchers greatly. Developments in the research of marine microbial resources are an important basis for the study of the micro-world and deserve increasing scientific attention.
